Chapter 237: Two hundred and thirty-six, chess piece

Luo Shu took out a silver needle and, with a swift movement, plunged it into an acupuncture point at the back of Zhao Xing’s head.

Zhao Xing’s gaze became vacant as the needle pierced his skin.

"Did you start the fire?" Luo Shu asked again.

"It wasn’t intentional. I just flicked a cigarette butt, and I don’t know how the fire suddenly started," Zhao Xing responded expressionlessly.

Luo Shu frowned slightly, reached out to remove the needle from the back of Zhao Xing’s head, and walked out of the interrogation room with Chen Zhihe, "Big Brother Chen, let’s release him." Since the arsonist wasn’t Zhao Xing, keeping him detained would be futile, and expecting him to compensate for the losses was out of the question.

The workers recently recruited were all from struggling households. If they were to make Zhao Xing compensate for the damage, it would be asking for his life, for he could not afford it.

Chen Zhihe nodded and asked with a furrowed brow, "Luo Shu, have you had a falling-out with anyone recently?" He had interrogated all the people brought from the factory, and apart from Zhao Xing, none had any issues. So it had to be someone from outside, and if so, it certainly must be someone with a grudge against Luo Shu.

"Yes, but they wouldn’t stoop to such childish tricks," Luo Shu said. The Song Family, currently holding Luo Zheng and Luo Shan, wouldn’t make a move against her for now, and with the family’s strength, they would disdain from using such low-level methods. As for the Yao Family, their reach probably didn’t extend to Cloud City yet.

"Do you have any suspects in mind?" Chen Zhihe inquired.

Luo Shu narrowed her eyes in thought and then shook her head, "If the culprit dared to act once, they will certainly do it again. We just need to wait patiently." She naturally had suspects in mind, but could they really be bold enough?

Song Xiran closed the file in his hands, stood up and walked to the window to stretch his stiff body.

The people he sent to look for Luo Zheng had not reported back, which surprised him. Although Jinchen was not exclusively under his family’s control, with the Song Family’s strength, locating someone should have been easy. Yet, after a whole week, there was still no word of the young man, making him curious.

He didn’t believe that Luo Zheng had gone to the Lu family. The Lu family was no ordinary place, and not only was Luo Zheng unfamiliar with Jinchen, even someone acquainted with the local terrain would find it difficult to locate the Lu household.

"You despicable thing, why are you blocking my way? Are you asking for a beating?" A shrill voice came from the courtyard.

Looking in the direction of the voice, Song Xiran saw Yao Qing glaring at Luo Shan, who was sitting in a wheelchair.

Seeing that Luo Shan didn’t react, Yao Qing raised her hand and slapped her.

Luo Shan furrowed her brows slightly, still with her head lowered and no reaction.

This only further ignited Yao Qing’s urge to teach her a good lesson.

"Not speaking, huh? Playing dumb, are you?" With each question, Yao Qing slapped Luo Shan’s cheek harder.

A glimpse of humiliation and anger began to rise in Luo Shan’s eyes. Finally, when Yao Qing’s hand swung at her once more, she reached out to block it and looked at Yao Qing angrily, "Why are you doing this to me? I have no quarrel with you—why must you hit me? Why must the Song Family treat me this way, why?" She clutched her head, endlessly asking why, as if questioning Yao Qing, and herself as well.

"Because you are Luo Shu’s sister, that’s why I can’t stand you," Yao Qing declared haughtily.

"My mother and your mother were sisters, I am your sister too..."

"Shut up! With that lowly nature of yours, you dare call yourself my sister? Believe it or not, I will throw you out to feed the dogs!" Yao Qing sneered disdainfully and raised her hand to slap Luo Shan across the face again.

Song Xiran slightly curled his lips upward, withdrew his gaze, and turned to sit back down on the chair. He had intentionally had people push Luo Shan out into the yard for the past few days so that she would suffer humiliation, only through such ordeals would she gradually change and become a useful pawn in his hands.

No sooner had Luo Shu emerged from the space, the telephone in her room rang.

She walked over to pick up the phone, and Lu Hanmo’s concerned voice came through, "Shushu, I heard someone set fire to your factory. Have they found the person yet?" He had heard about the incident yesterday, but his calls had gone unanswered. If not for the Guards being incredibly busy these past days, he would have rushed over.

"Not yet, how have you been lately?" Hearing Lu Hanmo’s voice immediately lifted Luo Shu’s spirits. She naturally didn’t want to discuss such troubling matters with him.

"I’m about to leave on a mission, and I might not be able to call you for half a month." Guilt and reluctance filled Lu Hanmo’s voice.

"Then take good care of yourself. When you get back, I’m going to check on you, and if you’ve lost weight..." Luo Shu teased with a sly smile.

"And then what?" Lu Hanmo’s lips quirked up in pleasure.

"I will make you eat Complete Tonic Soup every day until you’ve gained back all that lost weight," Luo Shu chuckled at the thought.

"Deal! I’ll wait for you to come and check on me." Listening to Luo Shu’s bell-like laughter over the phone, the smile on Lu Hanmo’s lips deepened. He truly wished he could be by her side, sharing in her laughter, right now.

"Luo Shu, are you home?" Just as Luo Shu had hung up the phone, she heard Mu Wan’s voice coming from outside.

She walked over, opened the courtyard door, and saw Mu Wan standing at the door loaded with bags of all sizes.

"Why are you carrying so much stuff?" Luo Shu asked as she took the bags from Mu Wan’s hands.

Mu Wan shook her somewhat sore arm, "These are for you. I went to Mo City with my parents for the New Year. All these are specialty products from Mo City, and they’re really delicious."

"Thank you!" Luo Shu smiled and walked into the house with Mu Wan, placing the things on the coffee table to the side.

She took the hot water thermos from the table, made a cup of malted milk for Mu Wan, and handed it to her, "Is Mo City fun?"

"It’s just some famous historic sites, but I love the street food there—it’s spicy and powerful. Luo Shu, let me tell you! I even met a handsome guy there," Mu Wan said as she took a sip of the malted milk, licked her lips, and giggled mischievously.

"How handsome?" Luo Shu smiled and arched an eyebrow.

"Very handsome! Extremely handsome!" Mu Wan blinked, her face full of infatuation.

Luo Shu waved her hand in front of Mu Wan’s face, saying mischievously, "Hey, hey, hey! Snap out of it! You’re practically drooling."

Mu Wan subconsciously wiped her mouth, only to realize she had been teased, "You’re so mean, just wait and see how I’ll deal with you..." Setting down the malted milk on the table, Mu Wan reached out with both hands, laughing as she lunged at Luo Shu.

"Hahaha..." The room was suddenly filled with joyous laughter.
