Chapter 231: Two hundred thirty, opportunity

"All right then! I’ll go get the village chief to come over," Li Er said with a smile as he walked outside.

Li Er’s house wasn’t far from the village chief’s, it only took a few minutes of walking to reach the village chief’s home.

Village Chief Li Mingsheng was sitting at the doorway smoking his pipe and basking in the sun when he heard footsteps, he looked up to see Li Er entering his courtyard.

"Chief Uncle, I have some great news to tell you," Li Er said excitedly as he approached.

Li Mingsheng took a puff of his pipe before asking slowly, "What great news? Look at how happy you are." It was still the Chinese New Year period, there wasn’t much work in the fields, and most villagers were at home, enjoying the sun or playing mahjong.

"It’s like this, the benefactor who saved me last time has come. She brought a good method that could make Siyang Village wealthy," Li Er said thrilled.

"What good method?" Li Mingsheng looked at Li Er with interest. As the village chief of Siyang Village, he certainly wished for the villagers to have better lives.

"She said she wants us to go up the mountain to help her pick the herbs she needs, and she’ll buy them at market price," Li Er relayed Luo Shu’s intentions to Li Mingsheng.

Upon hearing this, Li Mingsheng frowned, "That doesn’t sound too feasible!" Although the policies had loosened a bit compared to the previous years, who knew if the higher-ups would implement another big reform? By then, wouldn’t the villagers of Siyang become the scapegoats?

"Chief Uncle, this is a great opportunity! Think about it, if we refuse, there are other villages around ours. If my benefactor gives this task to another village, wouldn’t we just watch them prosper?" Li Er urged. Anyway, he had made up his mind that no matter whether the village chief agreed or not, his family was definitely going to do it.

The village chief took a puff of his cigarette, thought for a moment, and then asked, "Is your benefactor at your house now?" It would be a pity to give up this opportunity. He might as well meet the person before making a decision.

"Yes!" Li Er nodded his head.

"I’ll go see her then," the village chief stood up and called to his busy wife in the kitchen, "Fuying, I’m going to Li Er’s house."

Li Fuying stepped out of the kitchen, "What are you going to Li Er’s house for?" In their Siyang Village, Li Er’s family was the poorest. Since they were somewhat related to Li Er’s family, what if Li Er’s two kids asked her husband for New Year’s money? Would they give it or not? During the New Year’s celebration, not giving it seemed stingy, but giving it seemed futile.

"I’ve got something to do, I’ll tell you when I get back," Li Mingsheng spoke as he walked to the entrance of the yard.

Li Fuying caught up and asked in front of Li Er, "Old man, do you have money on you?"

Li Mingsheng looked at Li Fuying, somewhat puzzled, "Why do you ask?"

"Just give me the money," Li Fuying stretched out her hand. As long as he didn’t carry money on him, she didn’t care if he went to Li Er’s or Li San’s house.

After thinking it through, Li Mingsheng understood what she meant, shook his head, reached into his pocket, and took out all the thirty-six cents he had, placing it in Li Fuying’s hand, "That’s all I have." This woman really was stingy.

"Then come back early," Li Fuying, satisfied with the money, smiled, put the money in her pocket, and headed back to the kitchen.

Li Mingsheng followed Li Er to his place and saw that besides Li Er’s family, there was only Luo Shu. He glanced questioningly at the room connected to the central hall. Could Li Er’s benefactor be in there?

Li Er stepped forward, pointed back at Li Mingsheng, and introduced him to Luo Shu, "Benefactor, this is our village chief of Siyang. Chief Uncle, this is my benefactor."

"What? Your benefactor is this young lady?" Surprise and disbelief were visible on Li Mingsheng’s face. If the benefactor was this young lady, he really couldn’t agree to the deal.

"Yes, my benefactor is her. Not only is she skilled in medicine, but she’s also a very capable person. Plus, she’s about to start her own factory," Li Er said, his face beaming with pride.

Li Mingsheng remained silent, took a seat on a stool nearby, took a few drags from his pipe, and looked at Luo Shu, "Young lady, I think this matter you’re proposing is a bit risky. If it goes well, it’s fine, but if it doesn’t, our entire village could suffer." Seeing that the other party was a young lady, he dropped the idea of giving it a try. After all, what could a girl know?

"Is the village chief afraid that someone will report us in the future? Or are you afraid that I won’t be able to pay the money when the time comes? Or is it because I’m a girl, and so you don’t believe in me?" Luo Shu looked at Li Mingsheng with a serene smile. From the way he looked at her, she knew what he was thinking. So what if she was a girl? In the future, women’s achievements were certainly not less than those of men. In many cases, women did things even better and more impressively than men.

"That..." Li Mingsheng’s face turned somewhat embarrassed. He hadn’t expected Luo Shu to see through his thoughts so quickly.

"If it’s the first two concerns, you needn’t worry, Chief. I will sign a contract with you all, and everything will be done according to the contract. As for the last concern, I can’t do anything about that. After all, I can’t change who I am," Luo Shu said calmly. What she disliked the most was this kind of misogynistic mindset that regarded women as good for nothing but bearing children.

Coughing lightly and with an embarrassed tone, Li Mingsheng said, "Well... As the village chief of Siyang, I always have to consider a bit more for the villagers. You know how policies may change, but who knows whether they will change back in the future? If we really do get reported, how can I face everyone?"

"I will go to your in-charge and the town mayor to get this matter settled. But if you’re unwilling, I won’t force it. I chose Siyang Village because I knew Uncle Li Er; choosing another village wouldn’t make much of a difference to me," Luo Shu stated.

Li Mingsheng’s eyes lit up with anticipation as he looked at Luo Shu, "Can you really negotiate this with the town mayor?" As long as the town mayor agreed, he wouldn’t be afraid of being reported.

"Of course, I can," Luo Shu nodded. To her, this was a minor issue, solvable with just a phone call.

"Then it’s settled! I’ll go to the village broadcast station to make an announcement, hold a meeting for the villagers later, and count how many are willing to participate," Li Mingsheng decided, banging his hand for emphasis. Since Luo Shu said they would sign a contract later, with everything written in black and white, he wasn’t worried she would back out.
