Chapter 1010 - 1008, Hongmen Banquet
Chapter 1010: 1008, Hongmen Banquet
Shuimu Gang raised an eyebrow. "It seems I must meet them as well." It was rare for his wife to hold someone in such high regard.
"Then let’s invite them to dinner tonight. It’s a good opportunity to thank them for helping Yaenyaen," suggested Mrs. Shui.
"Alright!" Shuimu Gang nodded. He had always felt their timing in helping Yaenyaen was too coincidental, as if everything had been prearranged. However, after interrogating the people at Flower Moving Building, he hadn’t found anything suspicious. The seating arrangements for the pair had been organized by Flower Moving Building’s staff. Perhaps he was just overthinking.
Luo Shu and Lu Hanmo had barely returned to their room when a servant from the City Lord’s Mansion came to announce that the city lord wished to invite them to dinner.
"Hanmo, do you think the city lord simply wants to invite us over, or does he have other motives?" Luo Shu twirled the teacup in her hand as she glanced at Lu Hanmo.
"Suspicion is inevitable. They will likely test us," Lu Hanmo replied. "Anyone capable of becoming city lord and managing a city so systematically is definitely not a simple person."
"Looks like this might be a Hongmen Banquet," Luo Shu chuckled as she shook her head. Even if they were suspected, no evidence would ever tie the incident to them. After all, Xiao Hei, who executed the move, was securely hidden within her spatial realm.
"Are you afraid?" Lu Hanmo smiled at her. He knew even a Hongmen Banquet wouldn’t faze his Shushu. Not even Shuimu Gang himself could intimidate her.
"What do you think?" Luo Shu playfully stuck her tongue out at Lu Hanmo.
Lu Hanmo pulled Luo Shu into his arms, doting affectionately as he kissed her. "You always treat everything like a game."
"You understand me best, Hanmo," Luo Shu smiled as she entwined her arms around his neck, leaning forward to kiss his alluring, thin lips.
Night gradually descended. When Luo Shu and Lu Hanmo, led by the servant, arrived at the grand hall, Shuimu Gang, his wife, Shuimu Yan, and Shuimu Ye were already waiting there.
"Greetings to the City Lord Shuimu and Madam Shuimu!" Luo Shu and Lu Hanmo stepped forward to greet Shuimu Gang and his wife. Shuimu Gang’s sharp and shrewd demeanor was immediately noticeable.
"You truly are exceptional, refined, and articulate. Please, come join us in the dining hall," Shuimu Gang said with a smile, standing up to extend his invitation. These two were clearly no ordinary individuals.
Everyone proceeded to the dining hall, where Luo Shu and Lu Hanmo were warmly seated under the family’s enthusiastic hospitality.
"We owe you for stepping in and ensuring Yaenyaen’s injury was treated so promptly," Shuimu Gang expressed his gratitude.
"It was nothing, just lending a hand," Luo Shu said with a smile as she swallowed a bite of food.
"Did you visit Flower Moving Building for the sake of Miss Cui Xiang?" Shuimu Gang asked casually.
Luo Shu gave a slightly embarrassed smile. "To be honest, City Lord, I’ve admired Miss Cui Xiang for quite some time. After finally being chosen by her, I couldn’t bear to miss the opportunity. I hadn’t expected such an accident, but fortunately, I always carry medicines with me, or I wouldn’t have been able to help Brother Shuimu."
Shuimu Ye’s head lifted sharply at this, her glare immediately locking onto Luo Shu. What a flirt!
"I heard you didn’t bid," Shuimu Gang prompted. If Luo Shu had admiration for Cui Xiang, shouldn’t he have participated in the bidding?
Luo Shu glanced at Shuimu Yan. "I had planned to bid, but Brother Shuimu and Young Lord Li’s offers were unbearably high. I’m just a pharmacist; I don’t have that kind of money."
Shuimu Gang chuckled and nodded. "I see. Well, Miss Cui Xiang has already returned to Flower Moving Building. If she truly captures your heart, I could arrange for her to be redeemed and sent to you."
Luo Shu’s eyes flickered brightly with a trace of excitement, but he quickly masked it with an awkward smile. "I’d still prefer to redeem her with my own efforts."
"Nonsense," Shuimu Ye huffed angrily, picking up a piece of venison with her chopsticks, chewing lividly.
Mrs. Shui glanced at Shuimu Ye, faintly furrowing her brows. Could it be that Yeye had taken a liking to Luo Yu?
"Then I won’t press the matter further. I wish you success in achieving your goals," Shuimu Gang said with a smile, raising his wine cup. Luo Yu’s explanations had nothing suspicious about them. Perhaps he really had been overthinking things.
"Thank you, City Lord!" Luo Shu raised her wine cup as well.
"Brother Luo, Brother Lu, I toast you both," Shuimu Yan said, smiling and raising his wine cup once Luo Shu had set hers down. Through their interactions earlier that day, he had come to see value in befriending them.
"Brother Shuimu, your injuries haven’t healed yet. You shouldn’t drink," Luo Shu advised. She couldn’t help but feel a bit guilty toward Shuimu Yan. Despite possessing a face prettier than most women’s, his personality was refreshingly candid. If elixirs could have been used in this setting, she would have healed him long ago.
"It’s fine. Just one cup—it’s the least I could do to show my appreciation for your help," Shuimu Yan said with a grin.
"Alright!" Luo Shu acquiesced, noticing Lu Hanmo had already filled his own cup. She picked up hers and, together with Lu Hanmo, toasted Shuimu Yan. "Cheers!"
Shuimu Yan downed his drink in one gulp and burst into hearty laughter. "Once my injuries are healed, we’ll have a proper drinking session—no stopping until we’re fully drunk."
"Deal!" Luo Shu and Lu Hanmo replied with laughter.
"Yeye, have you fallen for that Luo Yu?" Once Luo Shu and Lu Hanmo had departed, Mrs. Shui turned to Shuimu Ye.
Shuimu Ye’s face flushed red instantly. "Mother, what are you talking about? How could I possibly like ’him’?" Yet, her heart raced whenever she saw ’him’, and hearing about ’his’ love for Cui Xiang filled her with inexplicable fury. This must be what liking someone feels like.
"I’m your mother; you can’t fool me," Mrs. Shui said with a frown.
"Fine, I admit it! But ’he’ doesn’t like me." The thought of ’his’ affection for Cui Xiang made her gnash her teeth with frustration.
"’He’ isn’t suitable for you," Mrs. Shui insisted. She refused to entrust her daughter’s lifelong happiness to someone of uncertain origins.
"What’s unsuitable about ’him’?" Shuimu Ye retorted, furrowing her brows. She thought he was rather fitting. Luo Yu, after all, was the only person who had ever moved her heart.
"Luo Yu’s background is obscure, and even your father hasn’t been able to uncover ’his’ history. I would never let you marry someone like that. Be a good girl and let this feeling go before it deepens," Mrs. Shui urged, gently patting Shuimu Ye’s shoulder.
Shuimu Ye nodded lightly. But her heart had already stirred—was letting go truly possible?
