Chapter 45: Won’t Sleep

When Emily had finally put her things away and laid down, Derek had felt like cheering like a soccer fan whose team had just scored a goal after and entire season of being goalless. And then when her breathing had evened out, and she had begun snoring lightly he had felt like screaming at the top of his lungs in triumph.

Finally! Finally! Asleep at last, asleep at last.

He had been beginning to wonder if she was even human. She had shown no signs of fatigue prior to her just laying down and sleeping. And with every second that had passed, Derek’s worry that the secret of his insomnia would be found out by his PA had increased. But wonder of wonders, just as he had seriously started to consider going out into the dangerous night, she had finally cracked and decided to sleep.

’I have set the alarm for eight in the morning’ She had said, no doubt wanting to let him know how many hours of sleep he would get.

But all that Derek had gotten from her message was how long he had until he had to fake waking up.

But now that Emily was out like a light, he no longer had to keep faking. He closed his laptop and put it away. He did not even remember what the movie that he’d had on was about, but at least now he did not have to worry about having to fake his interest for her benefit.

With his laptop put away Derek turned off the lights. He waited for a few more minutes, making sure not to move too much ,scared that he would wake her. Outside, he heard an owl hooting, it did so once, twice and then it went silent. The voices of people talking downstairs floated up to him, and Derek made a game of trying to figure out what they were saying. But the words were too muffled, so he chose to just give up after a while.

When enough time had passed for Emily to now be in deep sleep, Derek got ready to get up. Despite all of the fuss that he had made about getting the bed, he did not really want it. If she knew that she had wasted over forty-five minutes fighting for the bed with him when he did not even intend to use it.

She would most likely strangle him, but since she did not know that. And she never would Derek’s neck was safe. Truly, his plan for the night was to sit on his luggage and listen to static. The sound always helped him whenever he was in a strange place for the night, the repetitive nature of it allowing his body to switch off somewhat.

Now all he had to do, was get out of the bed, go to his bags, take out his ear phones and he would be set. From there, he would sit down on the luggage, take out his phone, turn on the static, and that would be how he would spend the rest of the night until morning came and he would pretend to wake up.Sitting up, listening to static, and then sneaking back into bed early morning.

No doubt, his back would be killing him in a few hours time. It was already killing him in that moment, but the pain was still bearable. He would have to book a full body massage when they got back, he would definitely be needing it.

Looking over to Emily’s side, he found her still turned towards the wall, her breaths indicating that she was still asleep. Being as slow and as quiet as possible, Derek made his move. He scooted to the edge, and then let one leg go down until the base of his foot was touching the ground. The he gently lifted the covers, being careful to make sure that Emily was still covered. Then he pushed up with his grounded leg and got up.

Turning back, he put the covers back down on the bed. Once that was done, he straightened, and turned towards the back of the bed where the luggage was. He took one step, then two, and he was half way to his third step when a sound came from the bed...he froze.

Emily was now mumbling something to herself, she turned over, moving around...searching for something. If he did not do something soon then she would wake up. And once she did that, he would have a very difficult time explaining to her why he was sneaking around like a thief in the night when he was supposed to be sleeping.

The old ’I was going to use the bathroom’ excuse would not fly since he was facing away from the bathroom door. She mumbled something again and Derek panicked, turning back he lifted the bed covers and got back in.

The moment he returned to bed, she stopped moving around, going back to sleep.

Lovely, just splendid, it seemed his PA was one of those people who gravitated to the people they were sharing a bed with. Which meant Derek was stuck for the next few hours. There would be no static to listen to , and no uncomfortable luggage to sit on. Just hour after hour of doing nothing but staying in bed.

The longer he stayed, his back against the uncomfortable head board, the more Derek’s back ached. He had already been through enough, from the unplanned trip, to the walk to the solar panel plant, which he had done in designer shoes meant for the boardroom not for roadsides. But he was stuck in bed now, and he had to find a way to lessen the impact on his body, so rather than sit up, he decided to change position.

Laying flat on his back was a delicate process. One he did with the utmost care, each inch he moved down on the bed hard earned, Emily moving every time he did, threatening to wake up.

There was a lot of pausing, and holding his breath. But in the end Derek managed it, he was laying face up on his back, his body instantly thanking him for it.

He lay in the dark for what felt like a long time, listening to Emily breathe. In, out, in, out, in, out... at some point he began to mirror, and as his breathing slowed, so too did his mind, and without him realizing it, Derek’s eyes closed. And he slipped into the land of dreams without a struggle, his body unconsciously curling around Emily’s.
