Sleeping With The CEO -
Chapter 194: U. Molson
Chapter 194: U. Molson
Emily did not like the fact that thanks to her sleeping problem. She lied to her mother on a regular basis. But over the years, she liked to think that she had gotten very good at telling those lies. But it seemed that even with Emily’s skills as a liar improving, year by year.
Her mother had still picked out that something was wrong.
She might have not been able to put her finger on it exactly. But the older Molson woman had known that something was off.
Emily would most likely have never known that her mom suspected anything, if the older woman had not come out with it. But not only had she come out with it, she had done so when Emily least expected.
It was Tuesday night, and the two of them were on the couch. There was some documentary about seagulls, playing on the TV, but Emily was not paying any attention to it.
Instead, she was laying on the couch, her legs hanging off the armrest. Her head pillowed on her mother’s lap, and her mom was braiding her hair. It was not anything intricate. Just a simple plait that would be easy to undo in the morning when Emily got ready for work.
But in that moment, she was not thinking about undoing anything. Instead, she was just enjoying the moment. Her eyes closed as she let the rhythmic movements of her mother’s fingers over her scalp lull her into a state of calmness.
At some point, the documentary ended, and was replaced by another television program. But Emily was still not paying enough attention to really see what it was about. But when she did start paying attention was when her mother’s hands suddenly slowed down. And instead of the comfortable silence that had been going on between them continuing.
Her mother had decided to speak up.
"I am glad that you dealt with whatever it was that was bothering you," She said, and Emily tensed, her eyes flying open. "What do you mean?" She asked. All of the relaxation instantly leaving her as she forced herself to sit up.
She had not meant to run.
But somehow, Emily ended up on the other side of the couch. Burrowing as deep into the corner as she could. And her mom gave her a wide-eyed look.
"Emily, why are you acting scared? I am not attacking you. I am simply telling you that I am glad that whatever it is that was bothering you these past few weeks.
It seems as though you have solved it," She said.
"Who said anything was bothering me? Nothing was bothering me. I am the most unbothered person in the whole wide world. In fact, I’m pretty sure when I was born, you were thinking of adding Emily ’Unbothered’ Molson to my birth certificate. I look like an unbothered, don’t I?
It would have been a very fitting middle name," Emily was rambling and she wanted to stop it, but she could not. It seemed that her mouth had just decided to run a mile a minute, and all Emily could do was go along for the ride.
Once Emily was done with her passionate speech of why she should have been named unbothered. Her mother did not say anything for a long while. Then out of nowhere, she just moved forward and the next thing Emily knew. She was being pulled into her mother’s arms and hugged tightly. Without a word her mom ended the hug and stood up.
"What was that for?!"
Emily asked, looking up and her mother looked down at her.
"Like I said, I am glad that whatever it is that has been bothering you these past few weeks, has been settled,"
"I have not seen you be this animated in a long time. I think that I just did not want to see it. But now that I see you being so active. I cannot believe that I ever looked the other way. For a while now, you have been looking miserable. And I had no idea how to solve it. How to get through to you," She said, her eyes looking unbelievably sad, and Emily felt her heart constrict.
Oh no, no, no.
Out of everything, this was the worst possible outcome. She had not wanted her mother, to feel even the slightest bit of burden because of her. But at the end of the day, her mom was still her mom. And even if Emily had been lying. Her maternal instincts must have still been going haywire. Telling her that something was wrong.
Getting to her feet, it was Emily’s turn to draw her mother into a hug.
"Mom, listen to me," She said, still not breaking the embrace.
"You are right. For a little while now, I have been going through something. But do not worry.
It was never anything serious. It was just work. Remember, I told you that I’ll be gone every few days to handle work. That is all it is. If ever you see me looking down, or like I have the weight of the whole world on my shoulders, you need not worry,"
"For the most part, I’m just thinking about work.
It is nothing that cannot be solved, and it is not anything that I want you to be carrying around, alright?"
Her mom did not answer verbally, but Emily felt her nod against her neck.
After patting her mom lightly on the back. Emily finally decided to let go and the two of them parted.
"You are sure you are alright? Her mom asked, tears in her eyes, and Emily nodded.
"Yes, yes I am," And for the first time in years it was not a lie.
With their night of just chilling on the couch cut short by the unexpectedly serious turn in conversation. They switched off the TV, and both of them headed to their respective rooms. Once in her room, Emily lay down. A hand over her heart, she stared at the window.
Looking in the direction of Derek’s penthouse. It was Tuesday now. All that she had to do was hang on for one more day. One more day, and then Thursday night would come, and she would be able to sleep. And the more she slept, the less her mother worried.
Emily rolled over and went to sleep. An hour later, she woke up drenched in her own sweat. Her clothes so wet that Emily, for a few brief seconds after waking up, was almost certain that the waters that she had been drowning in had followed her into the land of the waking.
Just a few more hours she told herself, as she got her breathing under control. A few more hours and she would be able to sleep without any nightmares.
