Chapter 42 : Why Do You Hate Me? (2)
Chapter 42: Chapter 42 : Why Do You Hate Me? (2)
"You might have misunderstood something," Shen Jingwei said earnestly. "I did not hurt Yan Renzhong."
He was naturally referring to Yan Renzhong’s sprained ankle, which, according to the victim, was caused by Feng Jietang, but according to the perpetrator, was purely accidental in nature.
When Chun Yao responded by shooting daggers in his direction, Shen Jingwei’s heart dropped to the pit of his stomach.
"Are you still a man?" she snapped. "Are you not going to admit that you slapped my Big Brother Yan’s face so hard that his cheek became swollen?"
Oh.
That one.
Now that made more sense to him.
"Yes," Shen Jingwei readily admitted his mistake. "That was me. I was too engrossed in the scene."
And in his long-lasting resentment, boiling and bubbling within him like a pool of lava.
"Hmph!"
Chun Yao puffed up her cheeks and looked away from Shen Jingwei.
"I was wrong," he said. "And I am deeply apologetic about that one."
Not that he openly apologized to Yan Renzhong about that one slap.
He also did not know why he did not.
Probably because, deep inside his heart, he did wish to hurt Yan Renzhong.
Guilt must be apparent on his face, because Chun Yao scoffed, crossed her arms, and pinned him with vicious stares.
"Are you only repenting now? About time!"
"..."
Sigh.
"I will do better next time, I promise."
Chun Yao squinted at him.
"By not slapping him anymore, you mean."
Shen Jingwei chuckled.
"That would be difficult because my character slaps his character a lot."
"....."
Chun Yao was appalled by the revelation.
"Why is your character so violent? Do you become violent because your character is so violent or it is your violent portrayal of the character that makes him so violent?"
".... Maybe you should read the book."
That would save Shen Jingwei a lot of hours filled with explanations.
"Hmph! Fine! Anyway, Mr. Shang is right. I already hired you to be in my MV and you did a great job, so no worries, I will still pay you. You can go if you want."
Shen Jingwei rose to his feet.
"Make no mistake, I am not here for money."
Chun Yao widened her eyes at him.
"I merely came here to find out why you hated me so much."
Chun Yao’s lips fell open in amazement.
"So, feel free to find someone else to re-shoot your MV. I won’t mind. Good day, Miss Chun Yao."
"WAIT!" Chun Yao cried out. "Don’t you know who I am? Don’t you know what kind of golden opportunity you are passing up on? If you feature in my MV, you will be known by millions of people! You will become popular*! And in a short time too!"
The door opened with a click.
Shen Jingwei turned his head slightly in her direction.
"I know," he said. "I do want to become famous and popular, but I don’t want to do it by using dirty methods. It will leave a bitter aftertaste in my mouth, and I hate it.
Goodbye, Miss Chun Yao."
Chun Yao glared at the door long after Shen Jingwei left.
When Xu Chengjiu and Shang Ruohai returned, she just had to vent her displeasure at them.
"Who the hell he thinks he is!" She spat.
"An admirable young star," Manager Xu nodded.
"A principled young man," Shang Ruohai smiled.
"Arghhhhh...!"
Chun Yao plopped down on a rotating chair and grumbled.
Shang Ruohai calmly walked over and sat on another chair opposite Chun Yao.
"Shen Jingwei is very generous," he pointed out. "Every act of service in our industry should be remunerated, however cheap. But he is willing to throw it all away for the sake of a trivial answer from your mouth."
He lifted a finger between them in a warning.
"I do hope that you won’t be that foolish and let his efforts go unappreciated."
Chun Yao chewed on her lower lip.
"The MV turned out great," she murmured. "Why would I throw the clips away? Besides... Big Brother Yan did recommend him to us."
"See?"
Shang Ruohai arched a brow at the young woman.
"Even your Big Brother Yan is not holding a grudge toward Mr. Shen, so why must you?"
Fearing that Chun Yao started throwing tantrums again, Manager Xu quickly came over to intervene.
"Aiyah... Mr. Shang, Chun Yao is young and impulsive. Please forgive her. We will process the MV as planned and send Mr. Shen his payment. Can’t we put an end to this issue right now?"
Shang Ruohai nodded. He pushed himself off the chair and straightened the creases of his clothes.
"Very well then," he said. "Chun Yao, while CNC Studio recognizes your talent, it takes a lot more than that to reach the top. You might want to learn a thing or two from your Big Brother Yan."
Before Shang Ruohai took his leave, he copied a specific clip from the MV shooting and sent it to Yan Renzhong.
"All done," he wrote underneath.
When the message arrived, Yan Renzhong was relaxing by the poolside, with a physiotherapist working on his sprained ankle.
The video clip showed Shen Jingwei, clothed like a young gangster, parading through the room with a haughty look across his handsome, youthful face.
As if by the hand of magic, he turned his head at the same time a young woman turned her head, thus marking their first, fateful encounter.
Yan Renzhong smiled gently when he saw the look on Shen Jingwei’s face. He couldn’t help but trace a finger across his phone screen, as if trying to pat the man’s cheek in reality.
A moment later, another message arrived.
This time from someone who had not sent him a message for the past three years.
"I just want to tell you that I made too many wontons that day. I packed the rest in the freezer. If you still want them, you can make another batch of wonton soup or just deep-fry them."
