Chapter 31: Chapter 31 : Digging Inside Shen Jingwei’s Wound
Yan Renzhong slowly turned his head to look at Shen Jingwei.
"How could you be so shameless?"
Shen Jingwei glared at this infuriating co-star of his. He could barely believed his ears.
Did Yan Renzhong just call him shameless?
"Excuse me?"
Yan Renzhong looked away and scoffed, as if he could not stomach looking at Shen Jingwei for a second longer.
"You let him put his arm around you. You make yourself appear so cheap."
"Did you just call me cheap?"
"I said, ’appear’," Yan Renzhong snapped at Shen Jingwei.
As if one additional word dampened the entire insult.
"It was nothing! A friendly gesture of camaraderie! There was no need to overreact, was there?"
Yan Renzhong shook his head in disbelief. He tilted his head backward and gazed into the distance.
"Did you hear yourself?" He asked softly, but his words were protruding with barbs. "After everything that happened, you seem to be determined to walk the path of destruction."
...
Screw giving him the benefit of the doubt.
This asshole deserved none of it.
Since he insisted on digging inside Shen Jingwei’s wound, the latter would not bother being polite at all.
"I am surprised, Yan Renzhong," Shen Jingwei spoke, his voice trembling from anger. "How are you suddenly so concerned about the path I walk on? You were quite comfortable with whatever path I walked three years ago."
A flash of pain momentarily mirrored in Yan Renzhong’s eyes was swiftly eclipsed as his lids closed. When he reopened them, all trace of distress had vanished, replaced by a mask of indifference.
"Where were you, three years ago?" Shen Jingwei asked, tears slowly forming in his eyes.
"... Jingwei..."
"Don’t call me that!" Shen Jingwei snapped.
That one word was enough to bring back all the memories of three years back.
The tender moments they shared back when they were nobodies.
The first love he believed in with all his heart.
And the subsequent painful heartbreak that tore the world he knew into shreds.
Hot, blinding tears fell across his cheeks.
Yan Renzhong widened his eyes at the sight, his lips parted slightly in astonishment.
"Jing..."
He extended a hand in Shen Jingwei’s direction, but the latter slapped it away viciously.
"Don’t act like you are close to me. Don’t get near me! Just leave me alone!"
Shen Jingwei leaped to his feet and marched toward the door. It already opened a slit before it was slammed close again.
Yan Renzhong’s both hands were pressing against the door, trapping Shen Jingwei in between.
"Didn’t you hear me?" Shen Jingwei hissed. "Let me go!"
"Jingwei, please."
Shen Jingwei started to sob.
"Why are you doing this to me..?" He choked out. "Why won’t you leave me alone...?"
Yan Renzhong’s hands slid down the door. He wrapped his arms around Shen Jingwei’s frame, holding him tight from behind.
"I am sorry," the larger man whispered, his warm breath blowing against Shen Jingwei’s earlobe with every word. "I am sorry..."
Shen Jingwei squeezed his eyes shut, allowing one final, solitary tear to trace a silent path down his cheek. With a violent jerk, he tore himself free from Yan Renzhong’s grasp.
"You seem to have forgotten," he said coldly. "I hate apologies the most."
He turned the door handle and walked out of the room, leaving Yan Renzhong behind.
To his greatest relief, Yan Renzhong did not follow him.
Shen Jingwei stepped outside, a slow breath escaping his lips as the warm sunlight enveloped him. In the distance, his co-stars were engaged in a friendly tennis match.
"Little Shen...!"
Feng Jietang, who was sitting on a long bench, rose to his feet when he spotted Shen Jingwei.
"Is everything alright?"
"Yes."
Feng Jietang narrowed his eyes at Shen Jingwei’s face.
"Your eyes are so red, even your face is somewhat flushed. He bullied you, didn’t he? I am going to teach that bastard a lesson..."
Feng Jietang was about to return to the restaurant to challenge Yan Renzhong to a duel, but Shen Jingwei grabbed his arm and yanked him backward.
"Don’t."
"But..."
"It’s a private issue between me and him," Shen Jingwei decided. "I don’t want anyone to meddle in our business."
Feng Jietang swallowed hard.
"I... Sorry, I didn’t mean it."
Shen Jingwei shot him a curt smile. He then gave Feng Jietang placating pats on the arm.
"It’s fine. There is no need to sweat over it."
That was what he said, but he was not interested in playing any game either.
All he wanted to do right now was sit on the bench and let his gaze drift aimlessly.
Feng Jietang sat next to him throughout the afternoon, a loyal companion in silence.

Author’s note :
Seems like Emperor Yan, in all his greatness, doesn’t know how to coax his wife. This is truly a matter of great concern...
