Chapter 271: Chapter 271 : Shen Jingwei’s Generosity
"I will be back today. Have you missed me?" A cheerful Shen Jingwei was seen across the screen, beaming at Yan Renzhong via a video call.
"I miss you terribly," Yan Renzhong responded with a smile. "Come back soon. I love you."
"I love you too! Say, Yan Renzhong, is there any local treats you want from around here?"
"No," Yan Renzhong said. "I just want you back home."
"Okay! Well then, see you in eight hours!"
Smiling, Yan Renzhong waved at Shen Jingwei before they ended the call.
Shen Jingwei’s smile faded soon afterward.
Maybe it was only the poor lighting in Yan Renzhong’s apartment, but the latter looked somewhat haggard. Even his eyes seemed to have lost their usual brilliant shine.
What happened to Yan Renzhong?
Did he get sick while Shen Jingwei was gone shooting at one outdoor location after another?
"Little Shen, should we take our leave now?" Sitting in the driver’s seat, Zhu Dongyi turned his head to Shen Jingwei and asked curiously. "Everyone else has already left."
"Ah. Sure."
The car started rushing along the deserted path. Before long, they arrived at more populated areas. With so many children and pedestrians walking along the street, Zhu Dongyi had to adjust his speed to adhere to local ordinances.
Their car merged with local traffic as they headed for the highway.
By chance, Shen Jingwei’s eyes snagged at a medicine store nearby.
"Old Zhu, can we stop here for a bit?" He asked.
"Eh? Why?"
"I need to buy something. Please wait in the car for me."
Shen Jingwei pulled his hat deeper to conceal his features. He then grabbed his phone and stepped out of the car.
The store in question sold Eastern medicinal ingredients, such as red ginseng roots, dried jujube fruits, goji berries, and many other herbs and spices believed to enhance vitality and boost immunity.
Shen Jingwei was not knowledgeable about these ingredients, but Chinese medicine storekeepers always knew what to mix at what amount to achieve the desired effects.
As Shen Jingwei looked at the various ingredients at the shelves, he overheard two women talking to each other in low voices.
Both of them were relatively old, probably in their fifties.
The woman in bright yellow blouse with flower pattern was sobbing into her handkerchief.
"Honestly, I don’t know what to do," she lamented. "It happened so quickly."
Her friend, the woman in purple, patted her back in a soothing manner.
"No one is ever prepared enough to face a disaster. See this as an obstacle you need to conquer. Everything will be fine, I promise you."
"I didn’t even know that I had... cancer!"
The woman in red shook like a withered tree as she cried.
"The doctor said that there was hope. Come now, don’t lose hope. We will do what the doctor tells us to do. Don’t worry. Let’s take care of your disease, one step at a time."
"B-but I don’t have the money!" She wailed. "All of these items are so costly!"
"Now, now, let’s just ask the storekeeper for a discount first. The owner is very generous. I am sure that they don’t mind reducing the price a little bit."
Shen Jingwei sauntered toward the counter and spoke to the owner, who was in the middle of mixing together some ingredients for another customer.
"Boss," he called out. "I need something to improve sleep and blood circulation."
The owner smiled at him.
"Soon, young man, soon. By the way, we just had some fresh bird’s nest delivered to the shop this morning. Why don’t you take a look while I finish grinding your order?"
"Sure, Boss."
He lingered close to the counter, looking at the piling boxes of bird’s nest nearby while listening to the two aforementioned ladies, who were now standing at the counter with a list.
The one who spoke first was the lady in purple. She had one arm draped around her friend as she explained the situation.
"Boss, our doctor gave us this list of ingredients to mix together. My friend here suffers from colon cancer. How much will they cost?"
The owner took a look at the list, calculated the total price, and wrote it down under the list of ingredients.
The two ladies gasped in horror.
"But Boss, why is it so expensive?"
"Please, can we ask for discounts?"
"We really need the medicine..."
"I see. Let me take a look at the list again..."
The owner made some more calculations on his wooden abacus before he came up with an answer.
"What about 15%?"
The ladies hung their shoulders in dejection.
"I am sorry, Boss, but will 50% be possible?"
The owner was a kind and generous man, but even he was unable to cut the price by half.
"I am sorry, 20% is the most I can give," he said regretfully.
The woman in yellow was close to tears. The tails of her eyes turned red and her lips quivered as she clutched her knitted handbag and bowed her head in resignation.
"In that case, I have no other choice. I will take the 20% discount. Thank you, Boss."
After another thirty minutes, Shen Jingwei’s order was finished. It was packed neatly in a jar and placed in a shopping bag bearing the logo of the store.
Shen Jingwei returned to the counter with two boxes of bird’s nest in his hands.
"Boss, I am here to pay."
"Very well, young man. Are you interested in buying these two boxes of bird’s nest in addition to your purchase?"
"Yes. And Boss?"
Shen Jingwei leaned closer to the owner, who instinctively craned his head to hear Shen Jingwei better.
"Let me pay for the lady in yellow’s purchase as well. And this one box of bird’s nest is for her. I wish her a speedy recovery."
The owner widened his eyes in surprise.
"Really? But it’s already quite expensive..."
"It’s fine," Shen Jingwei said in a hurry, not wanting the two ladies to find out.
"There is no need to tell them who paid for their purchase. I will cover everything on the list."
