Chapter 256: Chapter 256 : The Object Of Song Xiaoling’s Envy
The earlier they met and resolved the issues between them, the better.
Yan Renzhong screenshot the message and sent it to Shen Jingwei.
Yan Renzhong : "I am going to meet up with Xiaoling today. Jingbao, will you be fine on your own?"
They were riding on two different cars, heading to the same direction.
Yan Renzhong’s car was ahead of Shen Jingwei’s by several hundred meters.
Shen Jingwei : "Oh, she finally replied? That’s good. Go, I will be fine on my own."
He originally planned to drag Yan Renzhong to dinner at Shen family’s rented house, but unfortunately meeting Song Xiaoling was more important at this point.
After Zhu Dongyi dropped him at the Red Jade Pavilion, Shen Jingwei unpacked his suitcase and filled a bag with souvenirs and snacks he brought back from his recent trip.
He was about to walk the distance to the Shen family’s rented house when he received a call from a landline number.
"Hello?"
"Good afternoon, am I speaking to Mr. Shen Jingwei?"
Shen Jingwei put down his bag and plopped down the couch.
"Yes, who is this?"
"I am Nurse Ma from South River Hospital. Doctor Lian from the Pediatric Department requests your presence regarding a patient by the name of Song Yaya. Are you available for the appointment?"
"..."
It was rather unexpected, because the hospital was supposed to contact the guardians and not a distant acquaintance.
Then again, Yan Renzhong was meeting up with Song Xiaoling. Maybe that’s why none of them were available for discussion and Yan Renzhong gave the hospital his phone number instead.
"Yes," Shen Jingwei quickly agreed. "I will be there in fifteen minutes or so."
Shen Jingwei dropped everything and hailed a cab to head for the South River Hospital. But when he arrived at the reception desk, he received an astonishing message.
"Dr. Lian has left the hospital an hour ago."
"It can’t be," Shen Jingwei insisted. "I received a call from a certain Nurse Ma to confirm my appointment with Dr. Lian."
The receptionist shrugged.
"I can’t help you there. Dr. Lian is not planning to return to the hospital today."
"..."
Shen Jingwei was at a loss for words.
"In that case, may I visit the patient, Song Yaya?"
The receptionist nodded.
"Yes. Evening visitation time is ending in two hours. Please keep that in mind."
"Thank you."
Shen Jingwei dropped by a nearby florist to buy a small bouquet of flower and a book store to buy a small coloring book for Song Yaya.
Song Yaya initially stayed in a ward with four other children, but after only a day, thanks to Yan Renzhong’s connection, she was moved to a one-person ward.
When Shen Jingwei knocked at the door, the little girl’s shy voice was heard from inside.
"Come in."
Shen Jingwei poked his head through the door with a smile.
"Hello, Yaya. How are you doing?"
Song Yaya’s face brightened upon seeing Shen Jingwei, but her smile soon faded away.
"Uncle, good afternoon," she greeted her guest politely.
Shen Jingwei handed her the bouquet of flower. It came with a small vase, so there was no need to run around the hospital to find a vase.
"I hope you like it."
"Mmm. So beautiful."
"So, uh, how are you doing? I am so sorry that I haven’t come to visit you these past few weeks."
Song Yaya nodded.
"Doctor Lian told me that Uncle Shen and Big Brother are filming a drama in a remote place."
"..."
Shen Jingwei swallowed hard.
So it turned out that Song Yaya had embraced the reality and stopped referring to her elder siblings as parents.
The little girl appeared less cheerful, more contemplative than before.
There was profound grief etched in her expression, as she only recently began to accept the fact that her mother had already passed away and her father indirectly contributed to her mother’s death.
Yet, there was also a deep sense of tranquility, seen in the way she looked at the bouquet in her hand and also the way she tenderly touched the flower petals.
The past memories were painful, but it all happened a long time ago. In Song Yaya’s case, once she was thrust back to reality, she had to cope with the pain alone because everyone else had already moved on.
It was like being stuck in another world without knowing it, and now forced into living in the real world with everyone else.
The shift was not easy, especially for a child so young.
Shen Jingwei took one of Song Yaya’s small hands and clasped it in his.
"No matter what happens, you have a lot of people who love you," he said. "Uncle too, would like to be your friend. Will you please accept me as your friend?"
Song Yaya pressed her lips together, tears welling up in her eyes and shielding her eyes behind a glassy curtain.
"I was mean to Uncle," she said. "Does Uncle still want to be my friend?"
"..."
Shen Jingwei smiled.
"You didn’t mean it. It’s okay."
"I did," Song Yaya blurted out.
"..."
The little girl bowed her head, pressing her chin against the upper part of her chest.
"Big Sister said that Uncle was a bad person who was trying to take Big Brother away from us..."
Shen Jingwei’s eyes narrowed in contemplation.
He inadvertently recalled the few times he came across Song Xiaoling and Song Xiaoling’s reaction toward his relationship with Yan Renzhong.
And also the argument she had with Yan Renzhong at Heyday Aqualand.
Song Xiaoling disliked him, that much was clear.
Shen Jingwei had always assumed that Song Xiaoling was jealous that someone new was going to spend time with Song Yaya.
But what if the object of her envy was not Song Yaya at all?
What if it was someone else?
Could it be...?
Shen Jingwei swallowed hard.
Song Xiaoling, against all odds, could she possibly harbor unsisterly feelings toward Yan Renzhong...?
