Chapter 139: Chapter 139 : Which One Is More Important?

"Rehabilitation institutes are no prisons," Yan Renzhong reminded his stepsister with an impassive face. "I would not have pursued justice against Song Zhuguan for my sake; but this was already the second time he attacked Shen Jingwei. I won’t let this matter go."

Song Xiaoling’s lips trembled in distress, her eyes welling up with tears.

"What do you think will happen to him in prison?" she slowly asked. "His reputation is going to be ruined forever! He will be branded a criminal even after he is released!"

"He is a criminal, Xiaoling," Yan Renzhong insisted. "Do not try to sugarcoat it. Even you were afraid of him. Otherwise, why didn’t you go out to meet him when he pounded at the door?"

"I had to protect Yaya!" Song Xiaoling exclaimed. "Besides, it’s not like your friend lost a limb!"

"He is not just my friend," Yan Renzhong pointed out. "He is the person I love."

The police officers’ eyes widened in disbelief, their jaws slack with astonishment.

Wen Guilin leaned closer to them and whispered in a single breath, "I would like to remind you that everything you hear in this room is strictly confidential. Any breach of this confidentiality agreement will be met with severe consequences, including possible expulsion from your current position."

With a visible effort, the officers regained their composure, their expressions returning to a neutral state.

Song Xiaoling’s tears started falling.

"Between your family and the person you love, Yan Renzhong, which one is more important?"

Everyone present in the room could feel the tension between Yan Renzhong and Song Xiaoling, as their eyes locked in a silent battle.

Song Yaya, who was still hugged tightly by Song Xiaoling, began to cry.

"Mama, Papa, don’t fight, waaaaah....!!!"

Those present in the room felt that the little girl was too pitiful, but no one dared to say anything. After all, it was a private matter between family members.

Wen Guilin and Zhu Dongyi prayed fervently for any disruption. Might a blizzard break the door or a spaceship destroy the roof so they all had the excuse to leave!

Neither the blizzard nor the spaceship came. The brave soul who decided to end the stalemate was none other than Shen Jingwei.

He announced his arrival with a little cough.

"Excuse me," he said while cautiously entering the living room. He was wearing a set of Yan Renzhong’s old clothes, one he found in the bedroom’s wardrobe. "I don’t like putting anyone in a difficult situation. Whether or not to file a claim against Song Zhuguan should be purely your decision as a family. I don’t mind either way."

"Jingbao!" Yan Renzhong’s voice was sharp with disapproval.

Song Xiaoling was quick to grasp the opportunity.

"Thank you, Shen Jingwei, you are very thoughtful."

Shen Jingwei gave her a curt smile.

"Whatever you decide, I hope that you made the right decision. You can move to another house if you want, but he will still come back to find you. The next time, I might not be there to block a knife for you."

Shen Jingwei’s words cut deep into Song Xiaoling’s heart. Wordlessly, she hugged Song Yaya closer to her chest.

"Jingbao..."

Yan Renzhong closed the distance between them and pulled Shen Jingwei into his arms.

"Sorry, my clothes are a mess," Shen Jingwei patted Yan Renzhong’s back placatingly. "Allow me to borrow your clothes. I will return them as soon as possible."

Yan Renzhong sighed. "Why would I care about some old clothes...?"

"It’s fine," Shen Jingwei whispered into his ear. "I am fine. Don’t worry about me."

He then turned to look at Zhu Dongyi.

"Old Zhu, I think our business here has concluded. Let’s go back. Do I still have some classes to attend today?"

"What? Oh, I don’t know... I mean, sure! Sure! Let’s check your schedule!" Zhu Dongyi, who didn’t understand the assignment at first, quickly changed his response when Shen Jingwei pursed his lips at him.

"I will go first," Shen Jingwei said to Yan Renzhong. "See you again later."

They left so quickly, almost as if they were escaping a natural disaster. Inside the car, Zhu Dongyi couldn’t help but comment, "Little Shen, by right, even if Yan Renzhong refused to file a claim against Song Zhuguan, you as the victim are entitled to justice."

"I know." Shen Jingwei said while cracking his knuckles and rubbing the tension away from his neck. "I merely don’t want to put Yan Renzhong in a spot."

"But Little Shen..."

"Old Zhu, if both your mother and your wife fall into the water and none of them can swim, whom would you save first?"

"..."

Zhu Dongyi was at a loss for words.

"A classic trap question, isn’t it?" Shen Jingwei mused. "Naturally, the person being asked would pick the person who asks the question, in the hope of providing the reassurance the person needs, but won’t the person being asked harbor a certain resentment afterward?"

"Because, which husband would not feel the pain of losing a wife he loves? Or which son would not mourn the loss of a mother?"

"Little Shen..."

Shen Jingwei broke into a chuckle.

"Honestly, if someone asks me to choose between Yan Renzhong and my family, I won’t be able to make the decision. Getting one and losing the other will kill me, so simple as that."

Had his mother not dragged him to his father’s grave and given him parental blessings for his and Yan Renzhong’s relationship, would he have been able to engage in a proper relationship with Yan Renzhong?

Probably not.

If he was unable to find a woman to love, he might spend the rest of his life alone, like a solitary ship adrift in a vast ocean.

It did not matter whether his father had already left the world or not. He did not want to break his oath to his father.

That’s how important family was for him.

And since he was wired that way, how could he blame Yan Renzhong for siding with his family...?
