The surrounding neighbors were too gullible, easily affected by empty accusations. As soon as they heard Song Zhuguan’s description of Shen Jingwei, they quickly aimed their hostile words to the young man.

"Oh, so this is the person who is responsible for this mess!" A middle-aged lady stemmed both hands against her waist and looked at Shen haughtily.

"Young man, do you think that you can do whatever you want just because you are handsome?" An elderly man snapped at Shen Jingwei right afterward.

"You are going to burn in hell!" He shook a trembling finger at Shen Jingwei.

"Deceiving a child to abandon their parents is a crime, you know!" Another cried out, followed by a torrent of scoldings from the rest.

Shen Jingwei scoffed inwardly. The guts of Song Zhuguan, accusing him of a crime he did not commit.

Save for Zhu Dongyi, no one was here to help him. Picking a fight with Song Zhuguan in this circumstance was not the smartest move to make.

On the other hand, if he acted like the stranger who had no business being there, he might as well take his leave, and that wouldn’t serve his purpose at all.

"I did not do such thing," Shen Jingwei replied, his eyes flashing from anger.

A neighbor scoffed.

"All scumbags say the same thing once they have been caught. Now that you are here, you better take responsibility for your crime!"

"That’s right!" The others chimed in.

A wave of bewilderment washed over Shen Jingwei as he faced the hostile crowd.

"Everyone, you met this man for the first time, but you take his words at face value. What if he has been lying to you? What if he just intends to rob the house by using all of you as his willing helpers?"

Shen Jingwei’s words struck a chord with the crowding neighbors.

Big Pan, who had been so eager to break down the door, suddenly seemed much smaller. While the other neighbors had only added their voices to the commotion, he had taken matter into his own hands and slammed against the Song siblings’ front door.

"I... I heard my wife call me," Big Pan stammered. "I am sorry, everyone. I need to go! Good luck, old man!"

A sufficient smile laced Shen Jingwei’s lips as he watched Big Pan’s hasty escape.

"Anyone else?" He taunted. "Or do all of you secretly harbor evil intention toward the ladies in the house? After all, thieves don’t break into empty houses, they just wait for the right time."

Shen Jingwei turned to Zhu Dongyi, who was gnawing at his bag in distress.

"Old Zhu, call the police. This matter should not be handled by common folks."

Although people were generally curious busybodies, no one in their right mind would risk being dragged into the police station for someone else’s crime.

"Aiyah!" An auntie slapped at her thigh in regret. "I almost forgot my own cooking in the kitchen! Excuse me, everyone, I need to go."

She rushed off soon after.

Three elder men looked at each other before they broke into a nervous giggle.

"Didn’t we want to play mahjong together?"

"Yeah, we should. It is so close to lunch time. My wife is going to pull at my ear if I do not go home soon..."

One by one, the neighbors quickly dispersed.

In the end, only Song Zhuguan, Shen Jingwei, and Zhu Dongyi were left.

Song Zhuguan was so angry that veins popped up his temples.

"You should stop butting into others’ business, you faggot!" He cried out before launching himself at Shen Jingwei.

"Little Shen!" Zhu Dongyi, who had just called the local police station, screamed in terror when he saw Song Zhuguan’s fist fly like an arrow toward Shen Jingwei’s face.

With the grace of a seasoned fighter, Shen Jingwei’s hand closed around Song Zhuguan’s fist, his grip as firm as steel. In one fluid motion, he twisted the fist, causing Song Zhuguan to writhe in pain.

Shen Jingwei then shoved Song Zhuguan away from him, prompting the other man to crash onto the ground.

"You are older than me, thus I owe you some respect. But if you keep attacking me, do not blame me for defending myself."

Song Zhuguan jumped to his feet. He rummaged inside his pocket and retrieved a cutter knife.

The blade slowly emerged from its shaft, causing Shen Jingwei’s heart to tighten considerably.

"You think you are oh-so-great, eh?" Song Zhuguan sneered at him. A maniacal grin spread across his face as he watched the panic in Shen Jingwei’s eyes intensify.

"I told you not to interfere!" He howled as he began slashing at Shen Jingwei like a mad man. "Why don’t you try defending yourself now, huh? Huhhh???"

A single slash from the cutter blade came so close that it clipped a few strands of Shen Jingwei’s hair.

Shen Jingwei clenched his jaw in tension. He registered Zhu Dongyi’s shivering figure in his peripheral view.

This was not good.

He had to get away from Zhu Dongyi, Shen Jingwei told himself. Unlike him, Zhu Dongyi had never taken any martial arts lesson before. If he had to go against Song Zhuguan, he was going to get injured for sure.

And so, Shen Jingwei began to run.

As expected, the hot-blooded Song Zhuguan chased after him.

"Where are you going now??" The man howled behind him.

"Do you think you can keep running? Hahahaha! Hahahahahah!!!"

The man’s maniacal laughter grew louder, echoing in the air as he closed in on Shen Jingwei. Even as he fled, Shen Jingwei could feel the relentless slashing of the cutter’s blade against his back.

Just as he turned around to look at Song Zhuguan, one of his feet stumbled upon a protruding stone.

Shen Jingwei widened his eyes in terror as the ground came up to meet his face.

Meanwhile, the cutter’s blade struck at his back with a deadly force.

Shen Jingwei rolled to his back and raised his legs. With all the power he had left in his body, he kicked at Song Zhuguan, hoping to escape his doom.

Unfortunately, the kick never landed.
