Chapter 910: Chapter 456: Deep Into Enemy Territory? _2
After making all preparations and notifying Supreme Commander Xi Che, five days since their last disruption of the wraith altar, Long Dangdang and her companions set out on their journey again.
The Undiscovered Grotto Spirit Furnace activated, and the teleportation portal reopened.
Members of Demon Hunter Team 1911 filed in, with Wang Changxin leading the way; she needed to go first and secure the other side. Following her was Ming Xi, and then the three from the magic specialization, with Long Dangdang being the last one to cross, to stabilize the space portal of the Undiscovered Grotto, ensuring that no problems arose during the teleportation.
Once the teleportation was complete and the space portal closed, Long Dangdang stepped out of the portal and in a blink, Little Evil was already released by her. A gentle wraith energy accompanied by the Slow Delay Domain of the Gently Absorb Slowly Regurgitate Spirit Furnace silently emanated, immediately concealing the spatial fluctuations that had just appeared.
At this moment, the companions were gathered together, all maintaining a vigilant look, the tension of deep penetration behind enemy lines affecting each of them to varying degrees.
They were now in a jungle, affected by the wraith energy; most of the vegetation in the forest was bereft of vitality, the jade green no longer in sight, and the air was filled with the scent of death and desolation.
Long Dangdang’s spiritual power quickly connected with Little Evil’s, with spiritual detection fully activated, sensing the surroundings, while the rest of the group concealed their own presence, entering a dormant state.
It was about a quarter of an hour before Long Dangdang’s expression finally relaxed. When they initially teleported, they definitely produced spatial fluctuations, which was the time they were most likely to be discovered. As long as they overcame this moment, it would become much harder for them to be found. Fifteen minutes was enough time: if they had been discovered, powerful wraiths would have already come to investigate and would not wait any longer.
As it turned out, the perfect-level functioning of the Gently Absorb Slowly Regurgitate Spirit Furnace was tremendous, and its effect in concealing spatial fluctuations was exceptionally great. Moreover, the location Long Dangdang chose for the teleportation was particularly subtle, making it not that easy to be discovered.
"Does this count as deep within enemy territory?" Tao Linlin asked softly.
Long Dangdang nodded and said, "We’re approximately five kilometers outside of Stone Gate City, where I left a spatial marker before."
Since teleportation caused spatial fluctuations, she naturally wouldn’t leave a marker inside the city; otherwise, as soon as they teleported, they would likely be discovered immediately and then besieged. It was much safer outside the city. High-ranking wraiths within the city conducted periodic spiritual scans, but wouldn’t normally extend those to the outskirts.
To be cautious, Long Dangdang did not choose the core of the Wraith Kingdom, Calamity City, but rather Stone Gate City.
She was relatively familiar with Stone Gate City, which was not too far from Calamity City.
When it came to the Spectral Saint Mage, her own mother, Long Dangdang had always held her in high esteem, unsure of the extent to which her mother’s power had reached. But to establish such a Wraith Kingdom, her power was probably even greater than the Hall Master’s, surely not something they could currently contend with. Therefore, to better accomplish their mission, they naturally needed to avoid the direction of Calamity City as much as possible. Although, it was quite possible her mother was not in Calamity City but at the front lines; regardless, they decided it was never wrong to be more cautious—they did not believe they would have another chance to escape if they were captured again.
Through the last encounter, although he was reluctant to admit it, he understood that his mother was no longer the kind and loving woman she once was. Her heart was filled with flames of hatred, and her sole focus was on the complete resurrection of her child from a previous life. It seemed that only his brother had inherited the bloodline of her offspring from that past life, and what she wished to do was to have Kongkong devour him.
Shaking his head, Long Dangdang cast aside the painful thoughts in his mind and looked towards his companions, saying in a low voice, "If I’m not mistaken, Stone Gate City, as one of the few large cities in the Wraith Kingdom, must contain a wraith altar, just as the altar in Calamity City must be the largest. These are the power sources for wraith entities. However, we can’t directly target the wraith altar in Stone Gate City. It’s certain that there are Sacred Legate-level powerful wraiths guarding it, whom we are not capable of confronting at the moment. Therefore, our direct adversaries, and the best choice, would be the altars near Stone Gate City, which are at the rear of the Wraith Empire. As for the specific locations, we currently have no reliable intelligence, so we must search on our own. This will be our next mission."
Everyone nodded in agreement. The plan had already been formulated before their departure, and what followed was the execution of that plan.
Long Dangdang sprang up and silently reached the treetops, gazing into the distance.
A mere five kilometers away, Stone Gate City was clearly visible, with its skies shrouded in a grey mist, displaying no obvious vortex of wraith energy. Yet, the dense presence of wraith energy was palpable to them all, far surpassing that of the areas of the Wraith Kingdom they had previously entered. Merely looking at that grey sky brought a profound sense of oppression.
"Shall we enter the city?" Ling Menglu asked softly.
Long Dangdang shook his head and replied, "Not just yet. Let’s first look around the outskirts. Last time, I used the Earth escape shuttle. This time, we have to scout for ourselves. With Little Eight with us, finding the wraith altar shouldn’t be too difficult."
After roughly discerning the direction, Long Dangdang led the group stealthily towards the area in the opposite direction of Calamity City from Stone Gate City, moving swiftly.
They had been transported via the Undiscovered Grotto Spirit Furnace, which meant that its long-distance teleportation capabilities would be unusable for the next three days. Therefore, in the following three days, they would be exceedingly cautious, ensuring not to expose themselves even if they couldn’t locate a wraith altar. Even if they did find one, they would wait three days before taking action.
Long Dangdang also planned to return to Stone Gate City to observe it, as he wanted to gauge the deployment of the frontline forces of the Wraith Kingdom. The fewer high-ranking wraiths within Stone Gate City, the more it indicated that there were more powerful beings at the frontlines. This observation would be instructive for his subsequent actions to sabotage the wraith altars. However, all this would have to wait until after three days.
At about a hundred kilometers away from Stone Gate City, Long Dangdang found a depression in the mountainside. They carved out a cave on a shaded cliff face and entered it to rest. Meanwhile, Long Dangdang set up a mid-range teleportation mark there. With this mark, they would be able to teleport back in a short time if not too far away, thus gaining time to breathe and allowing Long Dangdang to activate the Undiscovered Grotto Spirit Furnace to return with everyone.
Once these preparations were made, the skies outside had darkened. For the upcoming three days, caution was the priority, and Long Dangdang was in no hurry to act. After eating some food with his companions, everyone took out elixir pills to replenish their Spiritual Power.
There was no supply of Spiritual Power in this place; apart from Long Dangdang, who could recharge using the darkness element, everyone else had to rely on elixir pills. Unless Ling Menglu invoked Divine Power to break through the barrier of wraith energy in the sky, but that would give them away immediately.
Inside the cave, Long Dangdang and Ling Menglu sat close together on a thick blanket. The only light in the cave was a dim glow from a Luminous Pearl, which had no attribute but allowed them to barely see one another. Little Evil was tasked with keeping watch outside, while the rest engaged in meditation to maintain their condition.
