Chapter 815: Chapter 408: The Mystery of the Soul Stone
Under the effect of the Deception Fruit, Long Dangdang now looked indistinguishable from an ordinary undead, dressed simply but without any signs of wear — just an average undead.
The shop, formerly occupied by wraith entities, no longer betrayed its original purpose, but it still maintained a rather lavish decor. Aside from the wraith aura that Long Dangdang found somewhat unsettling, it didn’t look much different from a luxurious human shop.
Upon entering the shop, Long Dangdang sensed strong spiritual fluctuations. However, they weren’t from a powerful individual but seemed more like many intense yet pure spiritual energies. The undead coming in and out all had a certain level of cultivation. On the faces of those leaving the shop, one could even see hints of excitement. Could undead creatures also possess such rich emotions?
Higher wraiths, despite intelligence comparable to humans, were supposed to be very dull in terms of emotions!
Driven by curiosity, Long Dangdang walked further inside. He wanted to see what these so-called Soul Stones really meant.
After passing through a front hall void of staff, he reached the main hall and saw that it contained just a ring of counters. Behind each counter sat an undead, and in front of them, other undead were lining up.
The queued undead exchanged various items with those behind the counters and then received a small bag in return. Even from a distance, Long Dangdang could feel the spiritual fluctuations from those small bags. Could these be the Soul Stones?
The items the undead exchanged for Soul Stones were diverse, mostly some minerals or plants with energy fluctuations. To human eyes, these would be precious metals or spirited fruits and herbs. Different items held different values here, resulting in varying amounts of Soul Stones received in exchange.
Long Dangdang used his spiritual power to scan his storage ring and then took out a standard estoc that he had previously used at the Knights Temple. He had already seen undead exchanging similar weapons for Soul Stones. This should work too, although he wasn’t sure how much he would get.
Following the undead in line, the wait wasn’t long. Soon, it was his turn. Long Dangdang handed over his estoc. The next moment, spiritual fluctuations appeared in his mind.
"Knights Temple Standard Estoc, worth five Grade D Soul Stones." The spiritual fluctuation was very clear. Looking behind the counter, Long Dangdang could clearly see the sparkling light in the undead’s eyes.
Without trying to respond with spiritual power, lest his identity be revealed, Long Dangdang just nodded. The undead handed over a small bag, and Long Dangdang took it and walked out of the shop.
Once outside, he turned and found a secluded corner to open the bag.
Inside were five stones, each about the size of a fingernail and grayish-white in color, emitting a not-so-strong spiritual fluctuation.
Long Dangdang felt a stir in his mind, as he had already guessed what these so-called Soul Stones were used for.
Undead need energy to maintain their activity and even their strength. Just as humans need to eat and drink to stay healthy, the primary energy that supports the existence of undead is soul power. The Soul Flame dancing in the eyes of skeleton soldiers is the source of their energy.
The Soul Stones he now held, presumably, provided something akin to what one might call Soul Energy or spiritual energy.
Long Dangdang took out a Soul Stone and held it in his palm, trying to touch it with his spiritual power, but he found that he couldn’t extract any spiritual power from it; the spiritual power inside was special and couldn’t be absorbed by him.
Only wraith entities could absorb the spiritual energy within?
As he pondered this quietly, a slightly excited emotion suddenly surged from the mental spirit ocean. Long Dangdang sensed Little Evil’s desire.
Did Little Evil want to absorb the energy inside the Soul Stone? Long Dangdang asked it, and received a positive response.
Long Dangdang wouldn’t release Little Evil within Wanning City; who knows if there were any particularly powerful undead here? Wraith entities generally had strong spiritual power. Once they detected Little Evil, his identity might well be exposed.
Temporarily suppressing Little Evil’s request, Long Dangdang searched through his storage ring and took out an enlightenment necklace he used to assist in his early cultivation. It was equipment given by the Magic Temple due to his outstanding talent, which he hadn’t used much afterward.
From the description by the undead behind the counter, he could tell that there were graded levels of Soul Stones. Grade D was evidently of a lower grade, and the items for exchange were judged based on their energy intensity and quality. The enlightenment necklace, although not too precious, was of Spiritual Magic Power Class and much better than the standard estoc, so he decided to try his luck again.
Re-entering the Soul Stone shop and queuing again, when he placed the enlightenment necklace on the counter, the undead behind it visibly showed surprise, then lowered its head to touch the necklace, outputting a noticeable spiritual fluctuation, seemingly scanning the necklace. After a short while, it looked up again at Long Dangdang, and sent a spiritual fluctuation, "Very good, Spiritual Magic Power Class magical equipment, worth three Grade C Soul Stones. Keep finding good items like this, and you’ll get more in the future."
