Chapter 590: Chapter 391: The Trick is Not Small!
Sean Knight had already packed up the Imperial Jade Seal. Since there were still many items left to be auctioned, Andrew Petrov couldn’t act just yet. He exchanged glances with Mikhainov, opting to let things be for now.
Like it was nothing, Sean stowed away the seal and just sat there, waiting for the auction to continue.
The Koreans and Japanese, stretching their necks, were still hoping for Sean to take out the seal so they could look again—
But how could Sean fulfil their wish?
He sat there calmly, watching Mikhainov, waiting for him to continue the auction.
Mikhainov had originally thought, like Andrew, that Sean was a gullible rich fool whom they could take advantage of.
Unexpectedly, Sean didn’t play by the rules which messed up their plan making it impossible to continue.
With no other choice, Mikhainov resumed the auction.
"Alright, Mr. Knight’s funds have been confirmed, so Mr. King should be satisfied. Now let’s continue with the auction ..."
Mikhainov, being rather crafty, tried to instigate his customers before auctioning, reminding Sean that it was Mr. King who suggested the fund verification.
Sean smiled faintly, clearly understanding the situation.
"Alright, the fourth item up for auction is Emperor Qianlong’s Hunting Picture, a famous court painting from the Qing Empire of China, painted by Giuseppe Castiglione."
This painting was a long scroll, about two and a half meters long and half a meter wide, with exquisite details.
Sean glanced at it, and it indeed appeared to be the real deal.
However, he was not interested in this item.
"You can come up and look, but you cannot touch..."
Mikhainov gave a reminder, and the Japanese and the Korean rushed forward again.
Sean still was unmoved.
However, everyone else didn’t notice, having gotten used to it by now.
Then they took their seats and the auction began.
"The starting price is 10,000 US dollars, with each increase no less than 1,000 dollars...begin!"
The Japanese and Korean spoke almost simultaneously:
"20,000!"
Mikhainov was taken aback, but he reacted quickly, pointing at the Japanese and saying:
"Mr. Hashishita, you were a bit slow in your bid, please bid again!"
"25,000 US dollars!" Mr. Hashishita immediately increased his bid.
Mr. King, not wanting to show weakness, feared that Sean would bid later, leaving nothing for him, so immediately opened his mouth:
"30,000 US dollars!"
The two of them went back and forth, bidding up to 110,000 US dollars before Mr. Hashishita couldn’t go any further.
Mr. King was pleased with himself until a sense of unease set in.
"Let him be pleased for now, sooner or later, when that Chinese local tycoon starts bidding, no matter how high you bid, it’s futile," thought Mr. Hashishita.
Indeed, this was Mr. King’s concern. He turned and looked at Sean, regretting his decision to instigate Andrew to verify Sean’s funds. He thought, how could he have been so foolish?
Just because of a quick slip of the tongue, he might end up paying tens of thousands of dollars more, or even possibly not get any item at all!
Unexpectedly, Sean, with his eyes half closed, just looked at the stage, seeming to have no interest in the current auction at all!
Mr. King was overjoyed — however, he thought it wasn’t because Sean didn’t like the painting, but because he had something on his mind, and therefore was oblivious to the situation.
Wasn’t this great?
Mr. King immediately turned to Mikhainov.
Mikhainov was also watching Sean — in his view, now was the opportunity for Sean to make his move!
Previously, whenever Sean joined the bidding, he simply outbid the two competitors with money, earning him and Andrew quite a bit.
Now he was also hoping that the other party could do it again and let Mr. King and Mr. Hashishita feel the charm of money!
He had also noticed that Sean appeared to be distracted from the auction, so when Mr. Hashishita and Mr. King made their final bids, he raised his voice hoping to remind Sean that the painting would soon fall into someone else’s hands and that he should pay attention!
However, Sean was completely unmoved, or perhaps he simply hadn’t noticed.
Feeling the gaze of Mr. King, Mikhainov cleared his throat loudly and said aloud:
"110,000 US dollars, 110,000 dollars once, 110,000 dollars twice, is there any more bidding?"
His voice was loud enough, yet it failed to make Sean open his eyes. But since Mikhainov didn’t want to earn less, he broke the rules and asked Sean directly:
"Mr. Knight, are you interested at this price?"
Mr. King was about to shout out — mate, you’re breaking the rules!
But at present, it was on someone else’s turf and he couldn’t complain — after all, the other party had two large bodyguards, armed with guns!
He could only turn his head away, huffing to show his dissatisfaction.
"I am not bidding, thank you." Sean opened his eyes and said, then closed them slightly again.
Mikhainov was somewhat disappointed, but he immediately smiled and said:
"So, with a price of 110,000 US dollars, congratulations to Mr. King for obtaining this painting. Now onto the fifth item, two volumes of the Yongle Encyclopedia..."
Sean immediately opened his eyes.
Previously, he had focused on the Emperor’s Gold Crown, the Imperial Jade Seal and other items, and failed to realize that two of these plain books were volumes of the Yongle Encyclopedia!
However, the covers of the two volumes were gone, so naturally they weren’t easy to recognize.
Sean Knight opened his Sky Eye and carefully inspected the two volumes.
Comparing them to the five volumes of Yongle Encyclopedia he had previously obtained, they were indeed the same size, with the only difference being the content inside.
