Chapter 581: Chapter 387: Could It Be a Conspiracy?
Mr. Kenton was Gerald’s classmate back in high school in another place.
Gerald wasn’t originally from this village, he came to visit relatives when he was young. Usually, people like him would stay with their relatives in the village before finding opportunities to do business or work.
Once they found their opportunity, they would leave.
However, Gerald was one of the few who decided to stay in the village.
The village itself didn’t have a large population, and at the time it had only been a few years since the policy of fixing farm output quotas for each household. His relatives managed to arrange his household registration here in the village.
Kenton Nelson was Gerald’s classmate in junior high school. They lost contact after they graduated. However, once Kenton started working in foreign trade and happened to pass through Xinjiang, he remembered he had a classmate here and looked him up. They reconnected through those visits.
In fact, when Kenton mentioned borrowing money from Gerald, it was under the assumption that it might or might not work out; he didn’t have much hope.
Now that there’s hope, he’s naturally happy.
Listening to Gerald’s request, he immediately said:
"If it were anyone else, they wouldn’t be able to do business with Andrew Petrov, because he’s hiding from creditors now. But I helped him a lot back then, so I’m the only one who can take a video of those items. You wait for my news, and by tomorrow at the latest, I’ll send it to you. But you have to keep it confidential...By the way, is the money reliable?"
"Rest assured, it’s absolutely reliable!"
After hanging up, Sean laughed and said,
"Gerald, I never thought you had such a wide network of friends."
"Well, it’s not as wide as yours, but I do have friendships outside the village." Gerald felt proud of being able to facilitate this deal through Sean, and it would help boost his reputation when he bragged about it later.
"Okay, I won’t stay. When he sends the video, I’ll let you watch it, and then you can decide." Gerald didn’t want to offend anyone, "Remember, Sean, you are the expert here, take a good look. If the items aren’t right, we can’t get involved."
"I know, thanks for your help, Gerald." Sean stood up to see him off.
Sean didn’t take this matter completely to heart; everything depended on seeing the video when it arrived.
However, a hat worn by an emperor... If it’s true, it’s definitely worth a look!
Nancy put the tiger bones away and when she came back out, Gerald had already left. Ralph then had Sean drive him to the county to find an old friend of Ralph to get some authentic grain wine.
"These days, you see a lot of so-called grain wine, but no one can really guarantee it. There are too many fakes out there." Old Master complained in the car, "What you brought back is good stuff, but if the wine we soak it in is bad, it’ll be a real waste."
Sean chuckled and asked,
"Grandfather, do you know where to get some pure high alcohol bulk wine?"
"Of course." Ralph confidently replied, "An old friend of mine retired according to the state policy and got his pension. With nothing to do, he started brewing his own wine using the skills he learned while working in a military unit. He sells the surplus when he has more than he can drink."
"By the way, Grandfather, why didn’t you retire and get that pension? It would be so nice to have."
"What can you do with that little pension? It’s less than 2,000 a month, ten years’ worth wouldn’t equal to the money I make in a year by leasing my land to the cooperative!"
Sean knew that the price of cotton was high last year, but he didn’t expect it to be this high.
"Besides, what’s a farmer without land? We common people can make do in the countryside. I’m not used to the city life with a pension, spending money on everything."
As they talked, Sean had already driven to the place Ralph had mentioned.
A small grocery store.
Sean and Ralph parked the car and went inside, where an old man wearing glasses was reading a book. Ralph slapped him on the shoulder and said,
"Big Xu, what do you think you’re doing, pretending to be cultured and reading a book?"
The man looked up, saw Ralph, and slapped the book down on his chair, saying,
"Old Zhu, what brings you here?"
"What, I can’t come to see you?" Ralph’s tone was aggressive, but Sean could hear that it was the customary way these old friends talked to each other.
"What, the sun is rising in the west?" Big Xu stood up, and he was indeed quite tall, about 1.8 meters or so. He’d even shrunk a bit due to his age.
It seemed that there were no wrongly given nicknames, only wrongly given names!
Ralph proudly pushed Sean forward and had him carry the wine to the car.
While Sean was outside, he could hear Ralph inside bragging to Big Xu about Sean’s accomplishments. Sean felt his face flush a little.
Is it appropriate to brag like this?
However, clearly, he had no say in this matter.
By the time they returned home, the sun had already set.
Mark had not come in yet.
It wasn’t until nightfall that Mark finally came in, smelling of alcohol.
Ralph, Sean, and Nancy were watching television.
Seeing that Mark had returned, Nancy asked,
"Did you drink? At whose place?"
"At the shop." Mark laughed, "Someone tried to trick me, but I got them drunk instead!"
"What trick? Who tried to trick you?" Ralph asked.
"Some people from outside the village." Mark sat down on the sofa, and Sean went quickly to get a glass of honey water for him.
