Chapter 580: Chapter 386: The Sudden Urgent News_2

"Treasure hunting!" Gerald’s voice became a bit softer. "I used to think that our place is too remote, let alone compared to central China, it can’t even compare to the coastal areas. There can’t be anything underground. So even though I’ve seen many treasure hunting videos, I’ve never tried it."

Treasure hunting is currently a popular trend on the internet. Many people are doing it, and even more people are watching it. So, it’s natural that Gerald knows about it.

After all, everyone watches short videos nowadays. This streamlined process allows the common people to view the treasures found by treasure hunters.

So, it spreads really fast.

However, Sean Knight can’t really give him advice.

He thought for a while and said:

"Gerald, let me put it this way. In the treasure hunting videos you see online, whether it’s magnet fishing or metal detecting, ninety-nine percent of them are faked, staged."

"I...I know that." Gerald isn’t foolish, he has somewhat of an understanding about this as well.

"Then, in our country, we have legal regulations that all objects found underground, unless they have a clear record or heritage, belong to the country."

"This..." Gerald showed an unnatural expression on his face.

"So, I can’t really give you advice on this," Sean Knight said with a smile:

"If I say it’s something you can do, then I would be encouraging you to commit a crime. If I say it’s not something you should do, the truth is, people do it, and some are not caught—true or false aside, they do exist. So, you would think I don’t want you to make money..."

"How could I?" Gerald’s face showed a slight uneasiness as he hurriedly denied it.

"You’ve also seen it, treasure hunting can indeed make people rich. But I dare not touch this business in our own country, so I go abroad." Sean Knight continued, "Therefore, I really dare not advise you on this issue."

Since Sean didn’t offer any suggestions, Gerald couldn’t force him to. However, his words did remind him.

Even if it’s not a crime per se, at least it’s a gray area. If no one reports it, it might just be fine. But if someone does, it would cause a huge problem.

After all, there are many people who can’t stand to see others living better than themselves - they can be found both in cities and countryside.

Gerald stopped talking about buying a metal detector and asked Sean where he had been this time.

Sean said that he went to the far northeast, to Russia.

"There are also ancient relics in Russia. Selling the things found inside can be quite profitable." Sean Knight couldn’t talk about Oscar Knight’s affairs, so he just casually mentioned a few things.

"I know about that!" As soon as Gerald heard about the Russian situation, he immediately became curious. However, this time he didn’t try to gather information from Sean, but began to talk about a piece of news he had heard recently:

"I have a friend who used to run trade business in Russia. Recently, he started saving money, wanting to do something big.

When asked what he was planning, he was talking about some Russian who had a bunch of treasure from our country — apparently, the guy was some sort of ambassador back in the day.

Lately, his family has run into some problems, and they’re planning to sell off some of their stuff. My friend is thinking of contributing some money to buy back a few items..."

Gerald’s eyes suddenly lit up:

"Hey! Sean, you should have some money yourself, right? You could also get involved in this."

"Old stuff? Are they our old stuff?" Sean did have some interest.

"Of course." Gerald replied, "There are things like paintings, and gold and silverware, and jade utensils, and the like. Quite a lot, in fact."

"They should be auctioned off, right?" Sean was a bit curious, "In recent years, the price of Chinese cultural relics has been rising in the international market. The money from auctioning would certainly be more."

Gerald scratched his head and said:

"I’m not too sure about that. But I heard a bit from my friend. It seems that due to the Russian’s connections with Ukraine, his home has been seized or something.

These items are from an old house that they are not aware of, they dare not sell them off — won’t it be taken away if they do that!"

"Then, your friend must be pretty well-informed." Sean was skeptical about this, after all, things were quite chaotic over there.

"Of course." Gerald’s bragging nature kicked in, "My friend is in international trade. He often gets some good things from here that they don’t have over there. After going back and forth a couple of times, he built a relationship with that Russian. My friend, is quite resourceful."

Sean guessed that, with such extensive connections, if Gerald still remembered him, his friend, either he valued friendships, or he didn’t have much power, and his social status was similar to Gerald’s.

Of course, he was merely speculating.

"So, what do you think, Sean? Do you want to consider it?" Gerald was very enthusiastic about this matter.

Of course, Sean could tell that Gerald was just being warm-hearted, without any specific purpose. There were quite a few warm-hearted people like him in the countryside.

Another group of people like this were the matchmakers, who do it without expecting anything in return. They would see a young man or woman, and think about whether they should introduce a significant other to them.

Of course, most of their actions were purposeful.

"I’d have to see the item... Oh right, if I want to buy it, I have to go there, don’t I?"

"Of course." Gerald nodded, "That’s why I didn’t plan to go. But you’re frequently abroad, you should be okay with that, right?"

"I’m not afraid to go, but I need to see if it’s necessary." Sean said: "If they’re just ordinary items, there’s no need to go there. Also, I won’t go if the place they’re at is dangerous."

Sean spoke very frankly about his fear of danger, which surprised Gerald.

Gerald thought that since Sean was often out and about, he should be fearless. After all, from the news, international situations were not so good. Sean would stay abroad for half a year or even a year, which should mean he was very brave.

But confessing his fear so openly, Gerald didn’t look down on him - after all, if a gun were pointed at his head, he would probably be afraid too.

"So what should we do?" Gerald was somewhat troubled, "Should I call my friend and ask? He’s short on money right now, so if you could chip in and lend him some, I think he’d be more than willing to take you along."

Sean thought for a while before saying:

"If the item is good and your friend doesn’t need much money, then I can lend it. But as I said before, I’d have to see the item first."

"Alright, I’ll give my friend a call!"

With that, Gerald pulled out his mobile phone, dialing and explaining:

"I have to send a message to my friend first, asking him to call me. If I dial an overseas number directly, it will draw attention."

Sean smiled and didn’t comment.

Gerald fiddled with his phone for a bit, then waited.

During the wait, the two chatted a bit more, but their minds were elsewhere.

Sean wasn’t very invested, but Gerald had a genuine desire to go through with this deal.

About 10 minutes later, the phone rang.

Sean saw the other party’s number displayed on Gerald’s phone, confirmed it was indeed a starting with "+7", a number from the Russian side.

Gerald immediately put it on speaker, and answered:

"Mr. Kenton, how are you?"

"Very good, very good." The voice of a middle-aged man came from the other end, sounding a bit hasty, and speaking in a hushed voice. "Gerald, what’s up?"

"Didn’t you call me last time to borrow money to buy something? How is that going?"

"I can’t gather the required amount, so I can’t get the item. I was scared to pawn the goods, so I didn’t ask about the matter later."

"It’s like this." Gerald glanced at Sean and said: "Over here, I’ve found an expert. He said, if you could provide some pictures or videos of the item, and if he’s interested, he might be able to lend you some money. Of course, it’s best if the items you guys buy don’t conflict."

"How much money can the people in your small village come up with? The item I want is a Jade Ruyi, a few tens of thousands won’t be enough!"

"Don’t worry about the money." Gerald had some guesses about Sean’s family wealth, and said with a smile, "As long as they’re satisfied with the item you provide, several hundred thousand is not out of the question."

"Really? There are indeed fine items in this old Russian house!" The Mr. Kenton at the other end perked up upon hearing this, "There are two Imperial Jade Seals, royal jade bowls, gold and silver ware, and even an emperor’s gold-threaded cap..."

Sean perked up upon hearing this: these were indeed valuable items!
