Chapter 499: Chapter 346: Trouble Follows Trouble_2
After firing that shot, Sean Knight immediately put away his gun and ran at an extremely fast speed towards the source of the fire.
Elijah Hastings also appeared at the edge of the vacant land, and the two of them ran towards the fire. In the midst of running, Sean picked up a fire extinguisher from a car, and opened the pin as he ran.
When they got close to the fire, it had already burned into a circle with a diameter of more than ten meters.
Sean immediately opened the fire extinguisher and sprayed it at the fire.
Elijah soon found a fire extinguisher as well and started spraying.
The fire was quickly suppressed, and Sean and Elijah finally relaxed.
"This guy did not die unjustly!" Elijah threw away the fire extinguisher, and kicked Owen’s corpse, "He still dared to start a fire at this time; he was really fed up with his life."
"Maybe he thought we were blocking his way to making a fortune."
With the workers gone, Sean and Elijah decided to rest and eat in the open space.
During the break, Elijah rummaged around and found a lot of supplies from the cars.
"This guy planned on a war of attrition here!" Elijah put a large bag of supplies in front of Sean, "It seems he planned to cut down at least three football fields!"
"Heh heh." Sean looked at the supplies and smiled, "Being too greedy is not good."
They put away the supplies, loaded more guns to disable the machinery, and made sure that none of these tools could be used again before they left.
Soon, the smell of blood attracted some animals from the forest. They found Owen’s body and devoured it as food.
When the police arrived with the workers who reported the incident, all that was left here was a pool of blood and tattered clothes.
However, when the police found out that Owen and others were illegally logging, they gave up on further investigations.
It’s better to do less than more – they had already discovered that these people were using large-caliber sniper rifles, which was not an easy thing to deal with.
Over the next week, Sean and his team searched the forest for greedy log thieves. When they regrouped after a week, they found six groups of people who were there to steal wood.
"Our side killed six. One gang was too crazy; they didn’t run after we attacked, so we couldn’t help but take them down," said Douglas Cooper, with an apologetic tone. Sean waved his hand, "It was their own doing. We also killed two here, and the rest ran away. Several were injured, and we don’t know how they are now."
"It shouldn’t be a big issue." Captain Hastings added a sentence.
"This is the end of this matter." Sean spoke, "Next, our main task is to go deep into the forest to an ancient Native American sacrificial site in search of treasure."
Hearing about the search for treasure, both Elijah and Douglas were excited.
Even Lincoln Harrington’s eyes lit up.
"But don’t have high expectations." Sean said, "The situation there is quite complex, so we’ll first assess the situation – by the way, which of you knows how to fly a helicopter?"
Elijah and the others shook their heads.
"You don’t know?" Sean was a bit disappointed, "You’re Special Forces Soldiers, and you don’t know this?"
Douglas rolled his eyes:
"Boss, have you been watching too many action movies? Come on, that’s just television! We were in a Special Operations Brigade, mainly focused on mountain warfare missions."
He pointed to Captain Hastings and said:
"Captain Hastings is the assault leader and also manages a small squad."
He then pointed to Lincoln Harrington and said:
"Mr. Patrick is a sniper who can also serve as an observer. Of course, we can handle some medical work as well."
He pointed to himself:
"I am a firepower specialist, but during combined operations, we can operate almost all light weapons in the army. But you can’t expect us to switch roles.
The special forces soldiers in movies can do everything; that’s for cinematic effect. In real life, special forces soldiers have specific tasks. The more specialized we are, the stronger our capabilities, and the better we perform in combat."
Sean nodded, indicating that he understood.
"Of course, the more skills we possess, the more chances we have to survive and counterattack on the battlefield. But we are humans, with endless training every day. How could we have time to learn to fly helicopters or operate submarines?"
"There’s no time for that."
"However, all three of us can drive infantry fighting vehicles, as they are easier to operate." Douglas Cooper changed the subject, "As for the flying stuff, we have all parachuted, descended with ropes, and used parachutes, but we haven’t had the chance to learn how to fly a plane because they won’t allow it."
It was then that Sean Knight finally understood some of the training content for special forces soldiers.
"Alright, since we can’t fly helicopters, we can only walk there on foot." The distance from here to Swan Lake wasn’t short, "It will take at least two or three days to walk. So we must bring enough supplies."
While Sean Knight and others were preparing their things, a police car arrived at the base.
It was Sheriff Bato, whom Sean Knight had met before.
Sean and the others heard the sound of a police car and walked out of the base.
"Hello, Mr. Knight." Bato was very polite, and Sean knew this was the result of the fifty-thousand dollars donation he made earlier.
"What can I do for you, Sheriff Bato?" Sean asked.
"Well," Bato organized his words, "Some people have come to the police station recently to report that they’ve been attacked by unidentified people in the forest, and many were injured..."
Sean shrugged and said:
"I’m very sorry about that. My forest is quite large, and there has been an economic downturn recently, so I haven’t recruited any staff to manage the area. Some people might be doing some... hard-to-understand things in the woods."
Bato understood what Sean meant, so he asked directly:
"So, this was not arranged by you, Mr. Knight?"
"No, why would I do that? Although my forest has been maliciously cut down by many people, I still allow it as long as it’s not for illegal gains and it’s just for their home’s firewood."
Bato finally understood Sean’s implied meaning, and he knew that those injured were basically complaining first as the guilty party. But since people reported the case, they still needed to handle it.
Now that it’s clear and considering Sean was a financial supporter, Bato naturally sided with him.
"Well, Mr. Knight, I won’t bother you any longer, I know how to handle this situation. I will also warn the nearby residents not to take advantage of this forest."
After Bato left, Douglas Cooper touched his chin and laughed, saying:
"The sheriff knows what’s going on."
"Well, that depends on how much money has been spent." Elijah Hastings added.
"All right, pack everything up. There won’t be comfortable beds and kitchens in that forest. The better we prepare, the more comfortable our journey will be." Sean cut off their discussion and told everyone to continue preparing.
On the way to Swan Lake, Douglas asked:
"Captain Hastings, how many people do you think will fall into our trap?"
"It’s hard to say, maybe not even one." Elijah replied.
"I think there will definitely be more." Douglas was confident, "As long as those people are still greedy and find the base empty, they will come back to steal."
When they left, Douglas said that he wanted to set up some traps at the base to prevent burglary.
Sean and the others didn’t object. After all, doing this was just a matter of convenience.
Two days later, they arrived near Swan Lake.
"Look at this hollow place, this is where I helped Brown find the treasure." Sean gestured at the hollow spot, "Later, the water came out from the lake, but now it should have receded a bit."
He sighed:
"It’s a pity about Brown, why did he have to go against me?"
This lament made Douglas want to laugh, but he didn’t.
Lincoln Harrington came over and whispered:
"Boss, there are people on the lake... and there are quite a few of them!"
Although it was expected, Sean’s face still showed a trace of anger.
"Dammit, they are prying into our treasure! Let’s go and check it out! We need to get rid of them!"
Elijah and the others immediately followed him.
Sean was also curious, wondering who would know about it and come to Swan Lake?
