Chapter 447: Chapter 320: Some People Always Need to Face Reality
Sitting in a rented courtyard, Sean Knight held a piece of the local snack of dried fish, chewing steadily while he asked Jaxon Kingsley:
"Go ahead, what exactly were you thinking? And how do you plan on making up for my losses now?"
Having been properly chastised, Jaxon Kingsley was no longer smug.
He had come to realize this reality — the young man before him, slightly younger than himself yet a rich man, wasn’t like those back home who needed to preserve their reputation. He wouldn’t tolerate any mistreatment.
In a place like this, there wouldn’t be anyone to help him in case of mistreatment or even death — not that it would matter if he were dead already.
So, at Sean Knight’s question, Jaxon hurried to answer:
"I was foolish and thought due to your renowned reputation, Mr. Knight, you might help us avoid our troubles..."
He sneakily glanced at Sean Knight, only to find his face motionless. Trying a different approach, he played the sympathy card:
"Mr. Knight, it’s really hard for us out here! We couldn’t find decent work at home, so we came abroad to try our luck. But it turned out not as good as we had hoped, people are constantly taking advantage of us..."
Jaxon’s words, however, didn’t win Sean Knight’s sympathy.
While someone may deserve pity, they also likely deserve blame — especially these two: their manipulative behaviour was definitely detestable.
"...We later randomly found a diary and bought it at a high price..." Jaxon glanced at Sean Knight.
"Still not being honest? Do you need me to repeat where the diary came from, to refresh your memory?" Douglas Cooper had no patience for Jaxon. When they had initially caught the duo, Jaxon had immediately pushed the girl at Douglas while he escaped into the crowd.
The girl had even clung to Douglas to allow Jaxon the opportunity to flee.
What a foolish girl.
But this had only made Douglas despise Jaxon more — a good man without a good wife was one thing, but a coward with a darling girl was worse.
Jaxon’s lies were getting smoother before Douglas abruptly cut him off and glanced at Sean Knight, whose face bore a smirk. Jaxon then realized that Sean knew all his lies; they were merely watching as he made a fool of himself.
He felt a surge of anger!
However, he quickly suppressed it.
When the circumstances overpower you, the only thing left to do is to endure.
"Err... I forgot. Actually, this diary was salvaged from the Flea Market. We didn’t think much of it then, but my girlfriend knows some Japanese, so she could read it. And that’s when we found Yamashita Fumio..."
The whole affair was a coincidence, but Jaxon’s recklessness drove things downhill.
At this point, Sophie King was slightly resentful of Jaxon.
But what could she do? After all, he was her chosen boyfriend. He sweet-talked her, was handsome and while he didn’t have much money, who could ask for perfection?
The rest of the story was straightforward. Jaxon didn’t dare lie anymore and shared the rest of the details. They roughly matched up with the analysis made by Sean Knight and York Howard.
Because Sean Knight and Oliver Brooks had initiated a large endeavour by inviting New Province construction group from China to develop Big Island, their reputation had spread far and wide, leading to much discussion.
So, when Jaxon was being investigated by some people, he casually mentioned that the goods had already been taken by Sean Knight.
While those people may not have believed him, the news still got out.
No one anticipated that later, some people found out Sean Knight had acquired some items while treasure hunting in Europe, and subsequently, someone found gold on Big Island. The incident quickly escalated.
Under the direction of some individuals, the conviction that Sean Knight possessed Yamashita Fumio’s treasure map spread far and wide. This piqued the interest of many treasure hunters who began inquiring about Sean Knight’s whereabouts.
Once Sean Knight showed up in Jakarta City, there was a notable increase in the people watching him, creating quite an inconvenience for him.
Although not everyone in the global treasure hunting world had picked up on this issue yet, Sean Knight anticipated that if it were allowed to continue unchecked, it wouldn’t be long before he got more unwanted attention, which would become painstakingly annoying.
After confessing, Jaxon stared nervously at Sean Knight.
Sean Knight gave him a swift glance before shifting his gaze to Sophie King.
Such a good girl, wasted on a wastrel.
Douglas had informed Sean Knight about what Jaxon had done when they were captured, naturally leading him to classify Jaxon as a scum.
Once the questioning was over, Elijah Hastings pointed at Jaxon and asked:
"Boss, how should we deal with this scum?"
"Drop him in the sea?" Douglas was visibly displeased every time he saw Jaxon.
Sean Knight looked at Jaxon and then at Sophie King, appearing somewhat hesitant.
"No, no, no!" Jaxon was terrified. He genuinely believed that they might actually throw him into the sea.
If he had been found out after the incident, when he had made money and his status was on par or nearly equal to Sean Knight’s, Sean wouldn’t have been able to hurt him then.
But now, it’s different, with Sean being the elephant and him, the ant. A mere step from Sean, and he would certainly be crushed!
Out of desperation, he set aside all inhibitions. Noticing Sean had glanced at Sophie King a couple of times, he assumed Sean was attracted to his girlfriend. In his fight for survival, he sacrificed all dignity:
"Boss, Mr. Knight... Mr. Knight! Listen to me! My girlfriend, she’s a college student—brilliant in academics. You can see she’s beautiful too—let her be yours... Just spare my life..."
