Chapter 431: Chapter 311: A Bowl of Water is Hard to Balance
Sean was somewhat puzzled by the sudden arrival of the two guests, though returning early wasn’t a first, it was quite a coincidence to meet them both at once.
"I left first because I couldn’t stand being at home anymore. I called them when I left, and Lincoln had something to do, and Douglas wanted to leave too, so they came."
Elijah took a glass of water handed to him by Oscar in the courtyard, said thanks, and explained the reason.
"What’s going on? Why couldn’t you stand it?" Sean asked with a smile.
Oscar brought another large plate of peaches at this time and placed it on the small table under the grape trellis. Then he said to Elijah and Douglas with a smile:
"You guys have a nice chat. I’ll go get busy."
Then he went to the vegetable garden.
Looking at Oscar’s retreating figure, Douglas’s eyes were a bit strange.
"Ah, I can’t bring it up. It was quiet for three days when I got back." Elijah made a bitter face, "Then all these blind dates came one after another. This time it’s better, no one says I have an unstable job now.
Especially since I sent home another 500,000 dollars, my mom’s mouth is so good that everyone knows I’ve got a good boss and made a fortune. And then blind dates came one after another..."
He gestured with his fingers and said excitedly to Sean:
"Can you believe it? One day, I had over forty dates in a row! The girls were lining up at the entrance to my house! I don’t want to go on a blind date again in my life...it’s more terrifying than going to the jungle of man-eating flowers!
I never thought I would be scrutinized like a commodity by others!"
Sean laughed loudly, finding the whole thing amusing!
"You’re still laughing... Do you know? The first thing those girls said when they saw me was – ’I like what you’ve got going on, I think the two of us make a good match. You’re so rich, get me a house in the city, and another car. After we’re married, I’ll take care of the money, how about that?’"
Elijah mimicked a girl’s voice as he said this, sounding a bit strange and yin-yang. Sean covered his stomach and quickly waved his hand:
"Don’t say anymore, if you keep going, I’ll laugh my guts out...hahaha..."
Elijah returned to normal:
"Tell me, how could I possibly stay in such a situation? So, I just decided to leave while I was out shopping. And now, every day, more girls add my contact information, send me photos, and want to hang out with me..."
He held up his phone to show Sean:
"Look, how many messages I haven’t read in just a few days..."
Seeing the row of 99+ signs, Sean was also a bit surprised:
"Isn’t that a bit too much?"
"Oh, the girl in the photo looks pretty good!"
Elijah snorted:
"Learn about the four great Asian evil arts! If you saw her in person, you wouldn’t say the same! If any of them were as beautiful as Cheryl, I wouldn’t have fled in panic!"
"Oh? Have you set your sights on the boss lady?" Douglas teased on the side: "Don’t blame me for not warning you, the boss is easy to deal with in other aspects, but if you dare have ulterior motives in this regard..."
"Get lost, I’m just comparing the standards of appearance. Even a blind man can see that Cheryl’s heart is completely set on the boss."
Elijah then glanced at Sean with a guilty conscience.
Sean didn’t take it to heart and turned to ask Douglas:
"What about you?"
"Me... hehe." Douglas looked somewhat lonely at the clouds in the western sky and said: "Heartbroken."
"What happened? Were you dumped?" Sean asked curiously, thinking that even if he was dumped, it wouldn’t be a big deal.
"If I was dumped, I wouldn’t care that much. After all, we’re young, and there are plenty more fish in the sea. But this time it was my family who broke my heart."
"Your family? You mean..."
"I have an older brother at home too." Douglas glanced at Oscar busy in the vegetable garden, "I gave most of the money I earned during the previous trips to my family."
There was nothing unusual about this. Sean, Elijah, and the three of them exchanged more conversations, for most soldiers were filial and, before marriage, would give their earnings to their family.
This was partly due to a sense of guilt and compensation. After all, one cannot be both loyal and filial, and it’s inevitable to feel guilty about not being able to take care of the family while in the army.
"This time when I went back, instead of asking if I was tired or struggling outside, my family asked for money first. They said the money I gave them earlier was used to buy a house and a car for my brother, and now there’s still some money missing for the renovation...hehe..."
Douglas looked up, seemingly watching the bees dancing on the grape trellis:
"They would never worry about whether I’m in danger or tired when earning money outside, only thinking that I earn money easily and my brother has no ability, so they take my money for him first - after all, we’re a family..."
Before finishing, Douglas wiped his face and lowered his head, saying no more.
Sean knew that he was truly heartbroken.
In fact, no matter how much harm is done by outsiders, it can be ignored as long as one is strong on the inside.
Ironically, it’s those closest to you that tend to hurt you the most – maybe it’s an unintentional remark, a thoughtless joke, or a self-righteous "I’m doing it for your own good."
"Have a peach." Sean handed him a cleaned peach, "These are the famous May peaches around here, they ripen early and are sweet."
Douglas took a big bite of the peach, ate with his head down, wiping his mouth occasionally, and said, "I really envy your relationship with your brother..."
"Hehehe." Sean smiled, "Stay here at home for a few days, forget about the other nonsense, and come fishing and loach-catching with me."
