Chapter 429: Chapter 310: Annoying Friend
Sean Knight’s return home didn’t cause much of a stir in the village.
Perhaps it’s because the village was established relatively late, and the people in the village came from all over the place. There were people from the South like Shanghai, Fujian, and the North like Henan and Shandong, as well as the Northwest like Gansu and Shanxi Province.
With such diverse regions and people, one advantage was that the customs of every region were brought along, but none of them formed a dominant culture. On the contrary, everyone being newcomers made the atmosphere quite nice.
For example, in terms of education, no family said their daughters couldn’t go to school—Sean’s most frequently heard phrase growing up was: "Even if we have to sell our pots and pans, we’ll send you to school."
In fact, because the village had a large area of land, there was no longer any need to sell pots and pans to send children to school. This was often the parents’ complaint about children not studying well because their next sentence would usually be:
"If you don’t do well in school, you’ll just have to come back home and farm."
Because of this attitude, the villagers didn’t gather around to watch the so-called excitement when someone like Sean returned home after making money outside.
At most, people with good relationships would come over, chat, and ask about things happening outside the village.
Sean didn’t encounter the bizarre incidents he often saw online.
Thus, the following days at home were relatively peaceful. Even if he went to work in the fields or caught fish in the pond, the villagers would greet him as they did before:
"Little Sean is back? How many days are you staying this time?"
And so on.
Sean would respond with a smile, just like before.
Such comfortable days brought a sense of calm to Sean’s heart.
Of course, it didn’t last for more than two days.
News of his return spread.
His middle school classmates called to say that since he was back, they should have a gathering.
Sean definitely planned to attend. When he was away, his classmates often visited his parents. And not just after he made a fortune - they did so when he had just started as a container treasure hunter in New York.
Not only his classmates, but the other villagers would help out if needed.
So Sean remembered their kindness.
He recalled a saying: "True friends are always there through thick and thin."
Sean’s parents were also very willing to let him participate in such social activities. They couldn’t be rich and ignore others; that would make them targets of gossip.
This was particularly important to people of Mark Knight’s generation.
The gathering was held at the most famous Phoenix Tower in the county town. The tower had a long history, and Sean could remember that he loved eating their meat buns since he was a child.
In the private room for twenty people, seven had already arrived when Sean got there. The organizer, their class monitor from school, and Joshua Bennett, the classmate who Sean considered the most loyal, had already arrived. Joshua came and patted Sean on the shoulder with a smile, saying:
"Come on, your popularity is huge. As soon as everyone heard you were coming to this gathering, seventeen or eighteen people from the county and the village joined in. Not bad at all."
Joshua’s attitude was still the same. Sean laughed and replied:
"Maybe everyone hasn’t gathered in a long time, so they’re using me as an excuse."
He sat down, greeted the classmates on his left and right.
Not many of his middle school classmates went to university, so they were all quite enthusiastic about Sean.
Some people knew about his situation and asked more questions, while others, who knew less, talked about old times.
Once everyone was together, Joshua asked the waiter to serve the food, and then raised his glass for a toast.
He didn’t use Sean as an excuse, which made Sean feel comfortable and relaxed. Someone even took a video and uploaded it online. Sean didn’t mind, as it seemed quite popular these days.
Given his current alcohol tolerance, he wouldn’t get drunk in such a situation. However, he avoided activities like singing after the meal.
While his energy could change his alcohol tolerance, it couldn’t change his vocal chords. He didn’t pay attention as a child and ruined his voice while yelling as he herded sheep. Even though he isn’t completely tone-deaf, his singing isn’t pleasant, so he wouldn’t embarrass himself.
He thought that would be the end of it, but the next day, one of the classmates from the gathering, Nicholas Hughes, called him.
"Invite me to dinner?" Sean was puzzled. "There’s no need. We just ate together yesterday. Is there something going on?"
"Nothing much, mainly...I’ll tell you the truth." Nicholas knew that if he didn’t tell the truth, Sean probably wouldn’t come, so he said:
"I write web novels. But don’t tell everyone. I found that the things you talked about are quite useful for writing novels. So, I thought I’d ask you to say more, and isn’t it better to invite you to dinner?"
Sean thought about it and agreed. Nicholas was once his desk mate in school, and since their relationship was good, it wouldn’t be right for him to refuse.
They changed to a different restaurant. As Sean sat down at the table, he noticed that in addition to Nicholas, there was a girl with heavy makeup and a pointy face.
When the girl saw Sean, her eyes lit up in a way that made him feel uncomfortable.
"Come on, sit down." Nicholas didn’t notice this and warmly greeted Sean when he saw him. "Today we’ll just have some beer and chat."
"Alright," Sean agreed, sitting down.
The girl took the initiative to pour water for Sean and then placed it in front of him, deliberately brushing her hand against Sean’s.
Disgusting.
"Come on, let me introduce you," said Nicholas:
"This is Molly Wilson, my wife’s cousin, also known as Molly online. She’s quite a minor internet celebrity in our county.
Yesterday, she saw the video I posted, saw you, and asked about your situation. When she found out I knew you, she wanted me to bring her to get to know you."
