Chapter 356: Chapter 273: The Fallen Marsh_2
Cheryl shook her head, something was amiss here, the fact at least demonstrated that Sean Knight was a good student during his school days.
"Alright, let’s adjust our route and head a bit more towards the south."
Sean put away the map, determining the direction.
With a goal in mind, their actions naturally were speeding up, and their morale was high.
With the assistance from Sky Eye, Sean was sure they were on the right path.
Because along the way, they could see a myriad of things underground, which included broken armor, arrowheads, bones, and so forth.
Moreover, the zone where these relics were scattered was more or less even, suitable for exploration on foot and for horses to gallop.
Further out, such "remnants" dwindled almost into nonexistence.
After all, traces of human exploration were sparse here, and it has been so since ancient times.
Then they arrived at the river bank.
Fortunately they were prepared, Douglas Cooper and Lincoln Harrington pulled out inflatable rafts from their backpacks and inflated them.
The rafts weren’t large, but could nonetheless accommodate two or three persons.
They chose a relatively gentle slope, Elijah Hastings and Lincoln Harrington was the first to cross over, with Sean and Douglas Cooper providing cover with their guns.
Once they confirmed the safety, Elijah and Lincoln held up their guns to cover as Sean and the others came aboard the raft and moved towards the other side of the river.
They put the raft away and holstered their guns, all five of them rested on the other side of the river.
Since they were closer to the national border here, so they didn’t light any fires and instead, resorted to eating convenience food.
After having their meals, Sean was responsible for navigating the way. He had barely moved about a kilometer ahead when he halted his steps.
A marsh appeared in front of them.
This seemed to be a wetland formed alongside a lake, the water isn’t deep, but there was an ample amount of grass sprouting from it, along with densely packed aquatic grass that was deep green like a tangled mess.
"Stay away from it, this place could easily suck people in." Sean warned the others.
However, considering the traces, it was evident that this was the direction the army had proceeded towards.
In the marsh, there were bones and fully intact armor.
Those were probably the soldiers who got sucked into the marsh.
"Boss, where should we go?" Looking at the marsh, Elijah and the others could only ask.
"We’ll detour." There was no better alternative.
Detour would entail traveling several extra kilometers.
But this was necessary.
With his affirmation, the others had no complaints.
After detouring for about three kilometers, Sean stopped walking.
He noticed that while he had deviated from his course, those "relics" hadn’t detoured much, but there were traces of wheel marks in the marsh surrounding the area where they assiduously detoured.
Underwater.
The average depth of the water in the marsh was a little less than a meter, but the submerged layer of silt was more than a meter deep, even close to two meters at some places.
But there were certain sections of the marsh where the terrain was relatively firm without any silt, so there were signs. They could barely make them out.
Could it be that the marsh hadn’t been so extensive in the past?
Seeing Sean halt his steps, Elijah and the others also stopped.
Sean continued to walk forward, soon after which he realized that something was not quite right.
There were signs of a battlefield ahead.
On the edge of the marsh and within the marsh, there were human bones, horse bones, arrowheads, halves of two-handed swords, pieces of one-handed swords, and spearheads and such.
That was strange, wasn’t it?
Sean remembered that there were hardly any long spears among the Mongolian Cavalry’s weaponry.
Most of their weapons were curved knives, maces, meteor hammers and the like.
Could these be the weapons of the auxiliary army?
Or local armed troops?
As he was pondering upon this and moving forward, Sean suddenly came to a halt.
Through the Sky Eye, he spotted two carts submerged in a relatively deeper part of the marsh up ahead.
One of the carts was loaded with glassware.
And in the other, a box filled with golden coins and a life-sized statue.
Made of gold.
Sean’s mind went blank for an instant.
Immediately, he understood.
This must be the golden treasure that Eric Barber was talking about!
However, considering both the golden statue and the coins, in total, they wouldn’t weigh more than several hundred kilograms, they wouldn’t even mount up to a ton!
How could that be worth 2 billion Euros?
Had Eric’s information been wrong?
After some thought, Sean roughly determined that his guess was probably correct.
Gold worth 2 billion Euros, that would weigh tens of tons!
After all, the current exchange rate of the Euro to US Dollar was roughly one to one point zero something, approximately the same.
The worth of a ton of gold would be more than 60 million Euros.
billion Euros, almost equated to 300 tons, that’s the gold reserve of some medium-large sized nations in the present day.
Could a small country of those times possibly have that?
Several hundred kilograms made more sense!
Several hundred kilograms, that could indeed be the situation of a small state putting everything on the line.
Otherwise, they wouldn’t have carried glassware. At the time, glassware must have also been quite valuable.
"Alright, we will set up camp at a safe spot around here for today." Sean commanded with a wave of his hand.
As for Elijah and the others, they naturally obeyed unconditionally. Chery had her doubts but didn’t voice them.
"I anticipate that we should make some discoveries within this marsh." Sean explained briefly, though it wasn’t convenient to talk too much.
At that moment, the walkie-talkie transmitted a static noise.
This was the result of the discussions held after Cheryl’s incident.
When there was something to discuss, press the button once. If there was static noise, they’d at least be prepared. If the signal was receivable, receive it; and if not, directly switch the device off.
Sean pressed the walkie-talkie and spoke:
"This is Sean Knight’s squad, we are currently on the southern bank of the Dnieper River, preparing to set up camp, over."
Soon, Eric’s voice transmitted from the other end:
"This is Eric, I’ve found something here, I have discovered a battlefield relic and am currently excavating. If you guys haven’t found anything, I suggest you come over."
Amid the static noise, Van Derick’s voice was also transmitted:
"I’ve also found something here, have excavated some broken weapons, and am continually searching. Over."
