Chapter 354: Chapter 272: Rescue_2
As soon as Cheryl Suweton saw Sean Knight approaching, she ran over and hugged him, even though she had previously remained calm and silent.
Sean looked surprised—I didn’t save you! It was my brothers, my assistants!
Douglas Cooper held a rope in his hand, presumably the one he had used to bind Cheryl.
A frustrated expression painted his face.
He had finally seized a chance to play the hero, but his efforts weren’t recognized at all!
He had talked so much to comfort her, fearing that she might have been psychologically traumatized. All that for nothing!
"It’s alright now, it’s really okay." Sean could only pat Cheryl’s back to comfort her.
Cheryl’s body was trembling uncontrollably. It was clear that she was utterly frightened.
Eventually, Sean managed to calm Cheryl down, gently pried her off him, and guided her to sit down. Elijah Hastings, who had collected the weapons of the five deceased "robbers", came over to report.
"When we were approaching stealthily, they were arguing about whether to kill Cheryl straight away or to toy with her first before doing so."
Upon hearing this, Sean suddenly understood why Cheryl was behaving the way she was.
How could she not be psychologically traumatized after being tied up, her clothes torn, and hearing that she was going to be toyed with or executed by those men?
She must have been extremely distraught and regretful at that moment, right?
If she had agreed to Eric Barber’s suggestion and had let two mercenaries follow her, this situation would probably not have occurred.
However, if there had only been the two mercenaries, they might not have been a match for these five men anyway.
In fact, the safest option would have been to retreat back to base camp when Sean warned about it over the Walkie-Talkie, rather than stubbornly continuing to explore.
Cheryl was now regretting and reflecting upon her past actions like Sean was.
If it weren’t for Sean rushing over with his group in time, all that would be left of her could just be a pile of bones.
She had truly given up all hope before—believing that no one was coming to rescue her.
After all, they were too far away.
And it wasn’t as if she had the time to leave useful information behind.
That’s right, it was all that bitch’s fault—she was constantly chattering on the Walkie-Talkie even when Cheryl had indicated that there was a situation. And as a result, Cheryl, who was hiding up a tree, was discovered.
As Cheryl was reflecting on her actions, Sean, having heard Elijah and Lincoln Harrington’s report, now had a decent understanding of the situation.
The five men had been carrying standard-issue guns and therefore did not seem like mercenaries.
However, their outfits were all over the place and their protective gear was inconsistent.
They didn’t have any informational documents on them, only dog tags.
In the end, Elijah speculated that they were likely mercenaries, or more specifically, mercenaries who had fled from the battlefield, crossed the national border, and were still on the run.
And then they ran into Cheryl.
In order to conceal their tracks, they decided to execute Cheryl after tying her up.
However, a disagreement arose before the execution.
And then Elijah and his group saw an opportunity to act.
Elijah and the rest of them were very close by.
Normally, these five men, who were as skittish as scared birds, would have detected them earlier.
But they were distracted by the act of tying up Cheryl and the ensuing argument, and ended up overlooking the situation outside.
Then, they were quickly dispatched by the trio of Elijah!
Although the bullets weren’t plentiful, they were universal and there were five guns, which was more than enough.
Using a shovel they had brought along, they dug a hole and buried the five men. After tidying up the equipment, Sean and his team left with Cheryl.
On the way back, Cheryl stayed close to Sean, not speaking a word nor breaking away.
This left Sean somewhat troubled.
Upon their return to base camp, Eric Barber was relieved to see that Cheryl was safe.
However, his relief quickly turned into shock when Sean recounted the situation to him.
"Van Derick hasn’t returned yet. When he does, I’ll make sure he learns his lesson! His people almost got Cheryl killed!"
Van Derick returned with two women half an hour later, the sun already slanting to the west at this point.
Van Derick, who must have already learned about the situation in advance, instantly dragged Veronica Wilson to Cheryl to apologize:
"Cheryl, I’m truly sorry! Earlier, I was searching for a clue, and Veronica didn’t know that you were in danger. So, when she heard the Walkie-Talkie, she just replied... I’m really sorry! I’m prepared to compensate for your loss!"
Cheryl just hung her head, ignoring him completely.
Van Derick looked very embarrassed.
Veronica mumbled a few disgruntled complaints.
In essence, she meant that it was an unintentional mistake, she had already apologized, what more did they want?
"Slap!" To everyone’s surprise, Van Derick slapped Veronica across the face!
With that slap, Cheryl was now in a difficult position to argue further, and instead simply said coldly:
"One million, and the matter ends here!"
"Alright, I will transfer the money as soon as I have a signal!" Van Derick agreed succinctly.
Of course, all of this had nothing to do with Sean Knight.
He gave one of the five "confiscated" automatic rifles to Eric and put the other four in his backpack.
That’s the advantage of a short-barreled automatic rifle.
Since this was their loot and it could be hidden, Eric couldn’t say anything.
Eric was already very grateful to Sean for being able to rescue Cheryl.
Sean found it strange. Was Eric wary of Cheryl’s identity?
He didn’t know what other roles Cheryl play besides being a treasure hunter, but that wasn’t important.
What was important was that this trouble seemed to involve him now!
That night, Cheryl quietly moved her tent next to Sean’s without uttering a word.
When Eric asked her why, she said that it was the only way she could sleep in peace.
Eric agreed immediately and asked Sean to look after her carefully.
The next day, after breakfast, Eric initially planned to assign four mercenaries to follow her, but Cheryl refused.
"I’m going with them," Cheryl pointed at Sean.
Sean had a headache.
This woman’s presence would risk exposing his secret cards, wouldn’t it?
Upon hearing Cheryl’s voice, Veronica mumbled something softly to herself in response and, as a result, ended up getting another slap from Van Derick.
Sean, with his sharp ears, heard her say words like "slut".
Is this woman an idiot?
When Eric came to discuss with Sean, he immediately rejected:
"Mr. Eric, as you know, my three men are specifically tasked with protecting me. Now we have one extra person, not only will it reduce the areas we can search, it would also disrupt the harmony of my squad..."
Of course, it was an excuse.
But Eric directly said:
"Then, I will send four more mercenaries with you..."
"Forget it!" Sean hurriedly waved his hand, having one more person was already a bother, let alone additional four. What was he supposed to do?
As he turned to look at Cheryl, she turned to meet his gaze at the same time.
Her previous confidence, vigor, and pride were all gone, replaced by a pitiful look.
Alright, Sean had a soft spot for her.
"You can come with us, but you must behave," Sean, implicitly, agreed.
Cheryl quickly nodded her head.
Then they began their journey.
Eric looked at the backs of Sean’s group departing with a hint of envy.
Van Derick walked over and said quietly:
"Is that it?"
"That’s the only way." Eric nodded and then shook his head, putting on a serious face, "Control your woman! Otherwise, I won’t hesitate to shut her up!"
"Okay." Van Derick revealed a touch of embarrassment, he couldn’t do without women, otherwise he wouldn’t have let the two women accompany him.
Veronica had become so mouthy because she was favored by Van Derick.
It seemed that a couple of slaps had brought her back to reality.
This time Sean’s group headed out in the same direction as before, but took a different route.
Their speed was not too fast because they were looking for clues along the way.
About two hours later and around seven or eight kilometers out, they reached a flat terrain with some shrubs and a few piles of soil.
Looking at those piles of soil, Sean suddenly stopped.
"Look, these piles of dirt lined up in a row, don’t they resemble the burial mounds we saw back in Chauncey?"
"Those were round, these are square," Lincoln Harrington was the first to notice the difference.
"And these are flat on top, they don’t look like they were flattened, it feels like they originally were flat." This time, it was Douglas Cooper who spoke.
An idea sprung to Sean’s mind.
Commander’s terrace!
He thought, with a high probability, this was the commander’s terrace left by the Golden Horde’s military!
