Chapter 352: Chapter 271: Gunshots!_2

Upon hearing his words, the others had no objections.

In the wild treasure hunting, such a situation was normal.

After taking the walkie-talkie, Sean Knight returned to the tents.

He told Elijah and the other two about the situation, and quietly had them hide their guns.

All three men were experts and didn’t need Sean to say much.

At midnight, the camp was invaded by wild animals once again.

This time, it was the civets.

The mercenaries on guard fired shots, but they didn’t hit anything.

"They probably followed the smell of our dinner, trying to grab something tasty," Elijah suggested.

In the morning, Eric Barber distributed weapons to Sean and his team.

Machetes, daggers, and short axes.

Sean picked up a short axe, while the other three each chose a machete.

After breakfast, everyone set off.

Sean and his team chose to head east.

Basically, they were following the river downstream.

The terrain here was uneven, and combined with the shrubbery and jungle, it was indeed not suitable for driving.

The camping area was fairly flat; it could be said that Eric had chosen the location carefully.

Along the way, Sean discovered that there had indeed been battles here.

Underground, there were occasionally remnants from ancient times: knives, fragments of horse gear, scattered human bones, animal bones, etc.

There were also large pits filled with dozens of white bones. Not only were there bones in those pits, but also some metal objects.

Though Sean didn’t think they were worth much, so he didn’t bother with them.

A variety of birds and small animals would occasionally startle and flee as they passed through the shrubbery.

"Stop?" Sean suddenly raised his hand and clenched his fist, signaling:

"Did you hear that? Gunfire in that direction!"

He was pointing towards the southeast.

That was where the national border was.

Elijah and the other two listened carefully but shook their heads.

Sean understood that he must have heard it. However, because he had absorbed more energy, his hearing was stronger than theirs.

"Let’s go. Maybe I heard it wrong. But still, be careful," Sean signaled to continue forward.

After walking for two more minutes, the sound of gunfire came from that direction again, and this time, Elijah and the other two heard it as well!

"Be careful, let’s hide!" Elijah took out his gun and signaled for Lincoln and Douglas to protect Sean.

Then, another shot rang out from that direction, with a slightly different direction.

"About seven to eight hundred meters away," Lincoln estimated, "but it’s not coming towards us."

Sean also heard it and immediately took out his walkie-talkie, pressing it to say:

"We’re hearing gunfire over here, southeast direction, moving south. All squads be aware, all squads be aware! Gunfire! Stay safe! Over!"

There was some static in the walkie-talkie, then Eric’s voice came through:

"Received, everyone stay safe! Now retreat back the way you came! Return to your original position! Over!"

After a moment of silence, Van Derick’s voice emerged:

"No situation on my end. Repeat, no situation on my end. I’m in the opposite direction, and I’m sure it’s safe. No need to return. Over."

Then came Cheryl’s voice:

"Gunfire? I didn’t hear any gunfire on my end. I’ve found something, and my location is safe. No need to return. Over."

Eric was helpless.

Finding three treasure-hunting experts was a good thing, after all, they were professionals. His search for treasure in this area was also time-limited. After all, they were digging in someone else’s country.

Even though he had spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to manage relationships, even though this was a deserted area, they couldn’t stay long. If they stayed too long and were discovered by the locals, trouble would ensue and risks would have to be taken.

So they had to be careful not to alert the wrong people.

But these few people were quite a handful!

Fortunately, at last, Sean replied:

"We’re heading back."

Eric finally regained some face.

Upon seeing the walkie-talkie put away, Douglas Cooper couldn’t help but ask:

"Boss, why are we going back?"

Sean Knight replied with a question:

"Did you hear that? What kind of gunshot?"

"Automatic rifles." Douglas’ hearing was also quite good.

"Right. Not hunting rifles. What does that tell you? It’s very likely that they’re soldiers, bandits, or something else. After all, we’re here to make money, not to fight bandits. If we can avoid it, we should."

His words were clever: he pointed out that they weren’t scared but just wanted to avoid unnecessary confrontation. Sean believed that, given enough preparation, his three assistants could ambush a squad of enemies.

Of course, that wasn’t necessary.

Douglas nodded and was then slapped on the head by Elijah Hastings:

"Just listen to what the boss says, why do you have so many questions?"

Douglas covered his head and mumbled a couple of words, but didn’t dare to resist.

Sean chuckled, knowing that Elijah was actually looking out for Douglas.

Clearly, this trip had changed Douglas significantly, and Sean felt good about it.

"Douglas, you go in front, Lincoln, you cover our rear, and we’ll head back," Elijah instructed.

The four of them walked back.

What they didn’t know was that, seven hundred meters to their southeast, nearly two dozen people dressed in military uniforms were spreading out and heading towards them with guns raised.

And about two hundred meters in front of those people, seven or eight armed men in ragged clothes were fleeing in panic!

Sean and his team quickly returned to their camp.

Eiris Perez had already returned to the camp as well, and upon seeing Sean’s group come back, he nodded with a smile.

Sean’s cooperation made Eiris feel good about choosing him as his partner.

At this moment in Paris, David was reporting Sean’s whereabouts to Heine Victor.

"He followed Eiris Perez, who’s known as the Mole, to the airport. I found out from airport staff that they went to Belarus. After investigating with some contacts over there, I found out they went southeast with some mercenaries..."

"Ukraine?" Upon hearing they went southeast, Heine immediately assumed they went to Ukraine.

Were they going to profit from the war?

The treasure buried by World War II couldn’t possibly be within the former Soviet Union territories.

So, Sean and his group must not be going after the treasure then.

"I’m not sure. But I guess it definitely has nothing to do with our target," David said helplessly.

Since they were in Belarus and had a car with them, it was unlikely they would drive back to Central and Western Europe.

So, they must have been wrong in their assumption.

Then where should they look for the target now?

Believing Sean to be the only person who knew anything, they had already ruled him out.

It was impossible to dig up the mountain in New York, he figured. The engineering was too big of a task. Plus, given that the area had already been bombed, even if they dug it up, anything they hoped to find would have turned to ash by now.

But where else could they look for clues?

"We’ll keep watching him!" Heine clenched his teeth, clearly reaching the limits of his patience, "I don’t believe he’ll stay in Belarus forever, and if he really knows something, I don’t think he can keep it a secret forever!"

"Should we..." David hesitated before suggesting, "Should we abduct him and interrogate him when he comes back from Belarus?"

"No," Heine directly rejected the plan, "You should know the strength of the three people around him. Unless we can find a team of elites to help us, there’s no way we can take him back!"

Though their organization was large, the strength of each group within wasn’t particularly powerful. If they had to take any action, they would need outside help.

Right now, their strength just wasn’t enough.

David felt very helpless!

Unaware that people were still scheming against him, Sean reported the situation to Eiris after returning to the camp.

Although he did find something, it wasn’t of great value.

"Finding something is good. It means we’re looking in the right area!" Eiris was actually quite happy upon hearing this, "Since we found traces, we’ll continue searching once we feel safe. We should get results soon!"

Although Eiris was unsure deep down, he showed enough confidence and optimism in front of Sean.

Sean smiled and said:

"Alright, let’s wait until it’s safe, then we’ll go back."

Douglas mumbled:

"If only we had a drone with us, at least we could scout the area..."

Sean felt some regret as well.

He regretted not taking out the drone from his spatial realm before setting off – he didn’t expect Eiris wouldn’t have one. Although he had one in his spatial realm, taking it out now would arouse suspicion since the items in his backpack had already been revealed.
