Chapter 316: Chapter 254: Unexpected Clue

In the afternoon, when Sean Knight and his team left, they carried a few more small seed samples with them.

Enough to make a bracelet. Although not worth a lot of money, it was a memento from their own excavation work.

After dinner, when they returned to the hotel and were about to go to their separate rooms, Aphrodite Johnson asked Sean:

"Are you going to the mountains tomorrow?"

Sean shook his head and said:

"We’ll see."

Disappointment flickered across Aphrodite’s face, but she quickly smiled and said:

"Okay."

Having grown up in China, Aphrodite understood the evasive meaning behind Sean’s "We’ll see."

Back in her room, she couldn’t understand why Sean seemed so reluctant to be around her.

Had he seen so many beautiful women that he just wasn’t interested in her?

That didn’t seem right!

Aphrodite had met her fair share of playboys and trust-fund babies. Most of them, upon meeting her, would actively seek out her contact information and invite her out for meals.

They all probably harbored the same intentions.

Or could it be that Sean was unusually faithful?

But aren’t all men supposed to be lustful by nature?

Aphrodite realized that this couldn’t continue. She had to take more initiative tomorrow. Otherwise, she wouldn’t be able to accomplish anything going forward.

Early the next day, Aphrodite carefully dolled up and went to knock on Sean’s door.

However, there was no response.

Feeling something was wrong, she went to Douglas Cooper’s room and knocked. Still no response.

She rushed to the reception desk and was informed that Sean and his team had checked out and left half an hour ago!

Aphrodite panicked!

This wasn’t good!

How was she going to complete her mission?

Not to mention completing the mission, she hadn’t even accomplished the first step of her plan - getting close to Sean!

She quickly pulled out her cell phone and realized she only had Douglas’s contact.

Couldn’t they be out for breakfast?

With that thought, Aphrodite nervously dialed Douglas’s number.

"Hello, Aphrodite," Douglas’s voice sounded distant, not as close as yesterday, which made her feel uneasy.

"Did you guys leave? Or did you go out for breakfast? Why didn’t you guys tell me?" Aphrodite tried to keep her tone light. "That’s not very gentleman-like, you know!"

She was hoping for a light-hearted response from Douglas.

However, his answer left her disappointed:

"We had to leave due to some issues. The boss asked me to wish you an enjoyable journey. That’s it, Aphrodite, we’re leaving now. Goodbye."

With that, Douglas ended the call.

Aphrodite hung up, feeling dazed and stunned.

She had failed.

She hadn’t expected her first failure to come so quickly!

Back in her room, Aphrodite dialed a number. Without waiting for the other party to speak, she announced:

"The mission failed. The subject is too vigilant and unresponsive. I had no opportunities to get close to him."

"So your beauty didn’t work?"

"It had a little effect, but not much. I strongly suspect that this Sean is either extremely straight-laced or has some issues with his orientation!"

Her tone was full of grievances.

"Impossible. He has a steady girlfriend back in the States, and they’re very affectionate with each other. Well, one failure isn’t much. Sean has always been cautious, so I will try to create more opportunities for you. Since it’s like that, you can come back now."

After hanging up, Aphrodite felt restless.

No man had ever disregarded her so blatantly!

No, she had to win Sean over!

Aphrodite’s resentment caused Sean’s ears to burn, even from a distance.

In the off-road vehicle, Lincoln Harrington was driving and Elijah Hastings in the back seat was reproachfully speaking to Douglas:

"Douglas, I’m telling you, if the boss didn’t say anything this time, it was because he was magnanimous, given our shared experiences of life and death.

You need to stop messing around! If you continue like this, I’ll kick you out, not waiting for the boss to make the move!"

Douglas was quietly taking the scolding.

"This is your last chance!" Elijah didn’t hold back his words.

Sean knew that half of Elijah’s scolding was genuinely meant for Douglas and half was a warning for him.

If he had to step in himself, there would be little room for redemption.

During this domestic trip, Douglas had indeed let his guard down, probably because he felt safe and was captivated by Aphrodite’s beauty.

Men, after all.

But because of this, he had failed in his duties, and that was a different matter.

At this point, Sean knew that Douglas realized his mistake.

Otherwise, how could a grown man like him accept a scolding like a chastised grandchild without uttering a single word of defense?

Of course, Sean was also watching.

If Douglas retaliated, Sean wouldn’t trust him anymore.

After all, it’s different abroad.

If he were an ordinary person it’d be fine, but being of high net worth and possessing a treasure that could enhance people’s abilities, he was a primary target.

Under such circumstances, if his bodyguard had issues, he wouldn’t live long!
