Chapter 300: Chapter 245: Something’s Strange About This!_2
The mention of delicious food filled Douglas Cooper with anticipation.
As for the milk tea, Alistair Murray’s grandmother and aunt went into the house to get busy, while two little girls emerged from the house and sat in the milk tea pouring area. They watched for who had an empty bowl and filled it up while quietly asking Alistair Murray about his life.
Alistair answered many of their questions, as the two girls were quite curious and kept asking one after another.
Sean Knight and the others were also curious. Seeing their expressions, Alistair found an opportunity to whisper:
"They’re asking about the current situation in West Province. They’re quite curious about that place. Actually, I think that in the past, many people from our place were curious about this side of China, but these two years, to be honest, the attraction has not been so great."
As he spoke, he said a few more words to the girls and their faces showed disappointment.
"I told them that getting Chinese citizenship is not easy."
Sean knew about this. It was easy to leave and if you had some money, you could basically get out, but coming back was difficult. And getting domestic citizenship was also not an easy task.
Without saying much on the matter, Sean enjoyed the milk tea, finding it quite comfortable.
Being born in the northwest, he had drunk it since childhood, so he was quite used to it. But seeing the milk pellets on the table, he declined to eat them as he was not accustomed to the taste.
Before the food was ready, Alistair’s two cousins returned.
One of them, Thakkar, was already married and was the father of the two girls. His family owned several hundred acres of land, more than ten oxen, and some sheep.
The other, Toby Roberts, was in his thirties and single, working as a factory worker in a processing plant in the Small Town.
Thakkar and Toby were delighted to see Alistair, embracing him and laughing as they spoke for a while.
Alistair introduced Sean and the others to his two uncles who, after exchanging a few words, probably to express their welcome, also spoke in a language that Sean and his companions could not understand.
However, this lack of communication did not affect their ability to sit and chat together, boasting about their achievements.
Through Alistair’s translation, Sean learned that they were actually quite content with their lives on both sides. There was interaction between the two places, and every year, they would visit Alistair’s family, who would also come to visit the grandmother here.
Although they were amazed at the development of West Province, they had no intention of moving there, as they considered this place their ancestral land.
Sean casually asked about the ancient city ruins deep in the plains.
Thakkar wasn’t sure, but Toby said he had heard about it from fellow workers in the factory. He had heard of people disappearing there and that there were even older ruins further into the plains.
Sean and Elijah Hastings exchanged glances but said nothing,
It seemed that others knew about their destination on this trip.
However, considering that the nearby ancient city ruins were not heavily excavated, Sean wasn’t too concerned about their final destination.
The big plate of hand-grabbed meat, Kazakh potato chips, and Big Plate Chicken came, and Thakkar brought two bottles of white wine. A glass was placed in front of each person, and each was filled.
Elijah whispered that he didn’t drink, but Alistair smiled and said, "Pour it, and if you don’t drink, just leave it."
He also whispered:
"Now, this is considered quite progressive. In the past, there were only two glasses, and everyone took turns drinking from them."
Sean remembered seeing this kind of drinking method in a small shop when he was a child.
According to Alistair’s translation, Thakkar said:
"Welcome to our home! We hope you enjoy your food, drink, and stay here, and we wish your families good health!"
Since they had already said this, they might as well enjoy the wine.
As they drank, their conversation grew livelier.
Although they did not understand each other’s language, through body language, they were still able to convey much of their conversation.
At this moment, loud chatter from outside interrupted them.
Sean looked around and saw a group of people at the entrance of the courtyard, some looking at the car and others peering into the courtyard.
A sudden sense of clarity washed over him; there might be a significant problem this time!
Seeing the people at the entrance, Thakkar, who was flushed from drinking, couldn’t hear what they were saying. He stood up and called for the people to come in and join the feast.
As part of the hospitable Kazakh tribe, they would usually invite their neighbors to help entertain a large number of guests.
But the people outside didn’t appreciate the gesture and continued to make a fuss.
At these words, Thakkar’s face changed, and he looked at Sean Knight and the others with a dubious expression.
Alistair Murray, being half a host, had drunk quite a lot, but he was still clear-headed at this moment. Hearing the people outside, he was also shocked, and hurriedly explained everything to Thakkar quickly.
Thakkar’s expression eased somewhat, but the suspicion did not completely disappear.
Alistair Murray quickly said to Sean Knight and the others:
"The people outside recognized the car, and they suspect us now..."
Thakkar and Toby Roberts had already stood up, and the women eating in the small kitchen also came out.
Sean Knight and the others immediately stood up as well, as they needed to provide an explanation.
"What did you tell your uncle?"
Sean Knight quickly asked Alistair Murray.
"I said we found the car..." Alistair Murray whispered.
"Well, now you tell your uncle that we found the car at the Winter Nest, and say that the place was burnt down, with nothing left, so we just picked up the car."
Sean Knight almost wanted to scold Alistair Murray. If he hadn’t said they’d found the car, claiming they’d bought a cheap second-hand black car would have been better than saying they found it! Now they would need many lies to cover up this one.
Alistair Murray hastily explained to Thakkar, whose expression was still not very good. However, they had already reached the entrance to the courtyard, and Thakkar explained to the people outside. Sean Knight could see that the people seemed half-convinced, but he wasn’t particularly worried.
What he didn’t expect was that in a short time, two policemen arrived.
Policemen from Little Town, this was becoming a big deal!
Alistair Murray seemed to be worrying about this too, and when the police arrived, he became somewhat flustered.
However, thinking that Sean Knight and the others had already sent the goods away, Alistair Murray was relieved. After all, there was nothing forbidden in the car now, so he wasn’t afraid of a search.
The police questioned them routinely, checked their documents, found no problems, and since Thakkar and Toby Roberts vouched for them, they didn’t make things difficult for Sean Knight and the others.
However, after listening to Alistair Murray’s explanation of the car’s origin, they asked them to show them the burnt Winter Nest.
Alistair Murray also realized that his explanation had caused trouble, and privately apologized to Sean Knight and the others.
At this point, Sean Knight didn’t say much.
But it didn’t require all of them to go, so Alistair Murray and Lincoln Harrington went.
To their surprise, many people from the town spontaneously drove their cars to follow them. Thakkar didn’t go, but Toby Roberts did.
After Sean Knight and the others finished their meals hastily, they rested in the courtyard.
Without Alistair Murray, it was inconvenient for them to speak, but two girls quietly came and tried to chat with them in stuttering Chinese, which surprised Sean Knight.
"Did you learn Chinese by yourselves?"
"Our school has a Chinese teacher." one girl said, "We learned from her."
"Do you want to go to China?"
"We want... to go to Alistair Murray’s brother’s house..." said the other girl.
As they chatted with difficulty, they heard a sound of a car, and Sean Knight guessed that Alistair Murray and the others had come back.
Alistair Murray and the police got out of the car, followed by a bunch of people. After that, a jubilant cheer erupted from the town!
Toby Roberts burst into the courtyard, shouting something. Then Alistair Murray entered the courtyard, smiling, and said:
"It’s fine. These robbers were troublemakers for them too, and they’ve been wanting to catch them for a long time, but they could never find their hideout..."
Sean Knight saw Elijah Hastings purse his lips but didn’t say anything.
Alistair Murray came close to Sean Knight and whispered:
"Lucky we changed our clothes after digging everything up..."
Sean Knight smiled, as he had thought about this before.
If they were really mistaken as robbers, they would be in big trouble!
