Chapter 297: Chapter 244: The Goal is Getting Closer, Danger is Getting Closer!
The sky was pitch black, and Sean Knight and his crew didn’t fuss, they took refuge in the Winter Nest.
Alistair Murray found it hard to get accustomed to it - a living person had just been killed in front of him, this had essentially overturned his worldview.
He walked out of the house and sat on the ground outside, looking up at the faint crescent moon in the sky, feeling a bit frustrated.
"You’d better not dwell on it." Sean Knight appeared beside him, "In a situation like this, no one wants to get involved, but once you do, it’s a matter of life and death, and there’s no third option."
"I know," Alistair Murray’s voice was slightly dull, his expression gloomy, completely devoid of the sunshine Sean Knight had first seen in him.
"It’s good you get it. Forget about this and move on, there’s still a lot to be done tomorrow." Sean Knight didn’t lecture further, merely offering a reminder.
In truth, he had nothing to fear. If Alistair were to reveal what happened, it would probably come to nothing in the end. There would be no one within domestically to punish them, and abroad, they had control over Alistair - he wouldn’t be able to make any consequential moves.
After all, judging from what Alistair had previously said, Sean didn’t believe he was the type to act out.
There were no words exchanged that night. With Elijah Hastings and others keeping watch, Sean slept soundly.
When they woke up the next day, everyone seemed fine, except for Alistair, who sported two large dark circles under his eyes. Sean patted him on the shoulder but said nothing more.
After a quick breakfast, Sean guided them in a direction, and the five of them drove off in two cars. The Winter Nest was quickly swallowed up in flames.
Now it was early summer, with verdant wild grass, there was no fear of causing a wildfire.
About ten kilometers from their camp, Sean asked the drivers to halt. He exited the car and climbed up a mound of earth.
It’s clear that this mound must have been created by human hands. Despite being only some twenty to thirty meters tall, in an area that’s basically a plain, it’s a small dominant point.
After ascension, Sean could get a better view of the surrounding terrain.
"Boss, looks like there’s something there!" With sharp eyes, Elijah spotted an area different from the plains elsewhere.
"That should be an ancient city ruin." Sean had noticed it as well, but as he compared the location to the map he had in mind, he had a feeling it wasn’t their destination.
However, the target should be further from that spot.
Sean thought for a moment and said:
"Let’s go have a look anyway!"
Elijah Hastings and others, oblivious of the fact that this wasn’t the destination, became somewhat excited. They got back into the cars and drove off in that direction.
The country road couldn’t reach the ruin site, prompting them to drive onto the plains.
The scent of fresh grass hit them as their tires mowed through and broke the grass stems under their vehicles. As they travelled, they startled several wild ducks, rabbits, jumping mice, and marmots basking in the sun.
Douglas Cooper couldn’t hold back and said through the walkie-talkie:
"Boss, why don’t we kill a couple of marmots to satisfy our craving? I’m sick of the food we’ve been eating these past two days!"
Even though there was beef and lamb in the dishes, they didn’t satisfy his cravings at all!
Only Douglas and Lincoln Harrington were in their car. Sean, Elijah, and Alistair were in the other vehicle.
"Stop your nonsense!" Before Sean could speak, Elijah had pressed the walkie-talkie and said while driving:
"We’ve had enough meat these past two days!"
"We can use its fat! It’s so chubby!" Douglas couldn’t hold back, "And moreover, there’s a lot of wild vegetables on the plains, plenty on our journey, and even mushrooms..."
"Marmots may carry plague..."
Alistair interjected.
Douglas Cooper immediately fell silent.
Sean smiled quietly. Douglas’ restless character would probably be a part of him for life.
But while it is worshipped as an internet sensation, the marmot can indeed be a potential carrier of the plague virus. There was an outbreak of plague in West Province because loggers had eaten undercooked marmot meat, infecting the entire logging camp. Therefore, Sean always kept his distance from these creatures.
Both cars stopped when they reached the ruins.
There used to be a city wall here, but now only a few waist-high compacted earth piles are left.
"Someone has been here!" After inspecting the surrounding area after getting out of the car, Elijah came to report immediately: "There were even excavations."
"Could it be those guys we disposed of yesterday?" Douglas threw a guess.
"It should be them." Sean knew he did enter the ruins, with Sky Eye activated, he smoothly scanned the area and found that these ruins most likely belonged to a small city from the Yuan Dynasty.
The city that spans less than one kilometer in radius is now covered with grass - but the grass is not high, at least half as short as the grass on the surrounding plains.
Sean hypothesized that the soil within the city walls was fallow, hence the poor grass growth.
"Take the shovels, let’s see if we can find anything of value." Standing at a higher point, Sean looked around, he did not see anyone nearby nor were there any signboards indicating that the site was under protection: this should be an undocumented ruin site.
There was nothing to fear.
Douglas Cooper couldn’t wait. He’d heard plenty from Elijah and Lincoln about their previous experience searching for treasures in the Maya ancient city ruins with Sean.
During the previous visit to Mongolia, Barnes had led Sean to the Buddhist Temple Ruins to find things, but Douglas didn’t have the opportunity to join them.
Now his chance had finally come!
Douglas Cooper, shovel in hand, rushed into the ruins.
Elijah Hastings and Lincoln Harrington each took a flank and followed him. They both remained near the entrance without straying too far.
Sean knew this was because they intended to rescue him immediately in the event of an emergency.
He turned to Alistair and said:
"You should go in too. There should be many treasures inside this ancient city. Those Golden Copper Horse Tacks from those people probably came from right here."
