Chapter 269: Chapter 230: Unintentionally Benefitting
The result of the discussion was reached quickly - or rather, a decision was made quickly.
Douglas Cooper stayed with Grant Kenneth and Willow Taylor, while Sean Knight and Elijah Hastings went to look for Lincoln Harrington and the others.
"Douglas, let me tell you..." At Sean’s suggestion, Elijah pulled Douglas aside and quietly told him about the unidentified large-mouthed creature, warning him to be careful.
Douglas listened and felt a bit apprehensive, after all, he didn’t know what it was and couldn’t predict when it might appear.
But considering the missing Lincoln, he nodded and said:
"Captain Hastings, you guys go find Lincoln. Don’t worry, I’ll take care of things here, I guarantee there won’t be any problems!"
Sean and Elijah drove together in the direction of the wind to search, while Douglas had Grant and Willow get in the car to rest. He then packed up, took out his gun, and waited in the car.
Grant was a little worried, and asked Sean through the walkie-talkie:
"Mr. Knight, you must find Jenny and the others!"
Sean was looking around as the wind blew, and all traces had vanished.
Fortunately, the Gobi Beach was almost endless except for the mountains, and the view was extremely wide, so any objects could be spotted easily.
Hearing Grant’s question, Sean answered through the walkie-talkie:
"Don’t worry, Professor Grant. I will do my best to find them."
He couldn’t guarantee that he would definitely find them. The dangers on this Gobi Beach were much more serious than they had imagined!
"Stop!" Sean spotted something black in the distance and immediately asked Elijah to stop the car, then got out and ran over.
Elijah also quickly got out of the car and followed, with his gun in hand.
As they got closer, Sean saw a man curled up beside a clump of white thorns, half-buried by the sand.
He quickly pulled the man out and checked his breathing and pulse, confirming that he was still alive.
Elijah came over and guessed:
"He’s probably a herdsman."
"Let’s save him. Do you know CPR?" Sean asked.
"Yes." Elijah handed over his gun and immediately started CPR.
Sean observed that this was a man in his thirties or forties, quite sturdy in build. He also had a horsewhip in his hand, making it evident that he must have been riding a horse around here. However, his horse and livestock were nowhere to be seen.
Not long after, the man regained consciousness and, upon seeing Sean and Elijah, looked shocked at first, but then understood something and spoke in his language.
Sean had already fetched the walkie-talkie from the car and called Willow over.
Through Willow’s translation, Sean learned that the man was named Barnes, a herdsman indeed. When the sandstorm had come, he had been driving his herd of hundreds of sheep back home, but there was no shelter nearby. As soon as the sandstorm arrived, the flock scattered in panic, and Barnes passed out after being thrown off his startled horse while chasing them.
Barnes expressed his gratitude to Sean and Elijah multiple times, but Sean could tell that Barnes was struggling.
It made sense, considering he had just lost all his livestock, which would likely make life very difficult for him.
Sean told Barnes through Willow:
"We are looking for three people who went missing during the sandstorm. We can only take you with us temporarily."
Barnes nodded in understanding.
The car continued to move forward, and Sean soon discovered the carcasses of dead sheep and yellow sheep in the sand. Some of the sheep belonged to Barnes, while others did not.
It seemed that not only Barnes had suffered heavy losses in this sandstorm.
"Boss, we have to change direction." After driving for almost an hour, Elijah stopped the car and told Sean, "Given the time Lincoln and the others have been gone, they couldn’t have gone this far. We must be heading in the wrong direction."
"Okay." Sean trusted Elijah’s judgment.
Elijah turned the car to the left, and after driving for a short distance, Barnes spoke up.
Willow explained that that direction was actually where Barnes’ house was situated!
Conveniently, they headed in that direction.
After driving about twenty kilometers, they spotted a surrounding wall and a sheep pen in the distance. There were a few sheep in the pen, but only about a dozen.
There were a few earthen houses near the sheep pen, which seemed quite old. Next to the houses was a pile of grass, presumably from the previous year, stacked neatly.
Any remaining hope that Barnes might have had disappeared.
A big black dog sprang out of the house, barking at the car twice. As soon as Barnes got out of the car, the dog stopped barking, tucked its tail in, and affectionately licked Barnes’ hand.
A woman and a young child ran out of the house, and upon seeing Barnes, they cried out in joy.
Sean guessed this must be Barnes’ wife and daughter.
The people who came out next surprised and delighted Sean: Lincoln, Jenny, and the teenager were all there!
Seeing Sean and Elijah, Lincoln looked both surprised and happy. After hugging Elijah, he turned to Sean with an apologetic face and said:
"Boss, I’m sorry. I didn’t take good care of them, and now you’ve had to come looking for us..."
"It’s not your fault." Naturally, Sean could tell right from wrong, and he had long seen through Jenny’s tea antics. He just hadn’t expected it to escalate into such a big incident.
Barnes’ family members, realizing that Sean and the others had saved Barnes, rushed over to thank them. Barnes took out a knife, scaring Elijah and Lincoln for a moment, and then they saw him heading towards a sheep and realized that he was going to slaughter it.
Sean quickly stopped him and told him not to kill the sheep.
Sean himself had come from a common family and knew how much the sandstorm had cost Barnes. There was no way he could bear to eat their sheep.
Jenny, who knew she had caused trouble and hadn’t dared to speak up, suddenly found herself useful - she had learned some simple Mongolian phrases with Willow and could act as a temporary translator.
