Chapter 268: Chapter 229: The Mysterious Source of Danger!_2

"Are you still sending money back?" Sean Knight asked.

"Yes." Elijah Hastings felt no need to hide anything, "Originally, I called upon some relatives and families. Now, there is only one or two people left, old and young, sick and schooling. I help as much as I can."

Sean Knight nodded and said,

"Once we’re out of here, I’ll contribute 100,000 dollars as a way to do my part."

Elijah Hastings didn’t refuse. He never considered himself a saint; he couldn’t afford to support those families on his own.

Though Sean Knight had a lot of money, Elijah had never thought of asking for his help.

Knowing how generous the boss was, Elijah couldn’t bring himself to bring the topic up.

Now that Sean Knight offered it proactively, Elijah felt he should accept.

"I’m not a saint either." Sean Knight looked at his expression, and laughed, "I know, just lend a helping hand for now. Emergency relief, not long-term support."

Elijah Hastings felt that the boss’s last statement had implications, but he hadn’t quite figured it out yet.

"By the way, how come you haven’t found a partner in your hometown, or do you already have one?"

Sean Knight changed the subject to lighten the mood.

"...No." Elijah Hastings finished the drink in his hand, put the can aside, and said with his head lowered,

"When I went to be a soldier, I had a girlfriend, a high school classmate of mine. Later... due to a mission, I lost contact with her for three months. She listened to others who said I might have changed... and then..."

Another sad story...

Sean felt guilty for raising such a topic and delving into two painful stories.

Elijah recovered quickly, raised his head, and picked up another drink. He took a sip and laughed self-deprecatingly,

"But I can’t blame her. There were some scumbags in our unit, cheating on girls with multiple relationships... sigh..."

It was evident that Elijah cherished that relationship greatly, but was helpless to keep it together.

"The last time I went home, I ran into her. She had already married and had a child..."

Sean Knight scratched his head, realizing he shouldn’t have brought it up.

"Actually, I know that part of the reason I came here was to escape, but I guess that’s what it is. I don’t know how to handle relationships after going to school and then joining the army. As for the future... let’s just let nature take its course."

Sean tried to lighten the mood by joking,

"Then I’ll ask Joanna Davis to introduce you to a girlfriend..."

"No, I still plan to find one domestically." Elijah hastily declined, "If I were to find a foreign girl, my grandfather would break my legs..."

Well, Sean decided not to raise a third inappropriate topic!

Elijah continued to speak on his own,

"Actually, all three of us have some troubles. Like me and Lincoln Harrington, we really need to make money."

"Is Lincoln’s family poor?"

"Yes, they’re really poor." Elijah said, "Lincoln’s family lives in a mountainous area. You know, the kind of place where you live off the land and even water supply depends on when it rains."

Sean had seen that on television and had even donated to the mother’s water cellar, but he never thought Lincoln was from that kind of place.

"Although things are better there now, some people moved to better places, and some went to work outside. However, the elderly ancestors are still living there and don’t want to move."

According to Elijah, there were only a few dozen people left in Lincoln’s village, all elderly.

"In fact, the local authorities have also asked them to leave that place, but the elderly people are unwilling to move. They say that it rained more this year, so the harvest was good. They insist on staying."

Though young, Sean could understand the reluctance to leave their roots, just like how he only agreed to apply for a Green Card but would never naturalize.

"What’s the deal with Douglas Cooper?"

"Douglas Cooper? He’s rich and idle!" Elijah said with annoyance when Sean mentioned Douglas Cooper.

"His family is rich? Why’d he come out then?" Sean was very curious.

Sean could tell that Douglas Cooper’s family was not short of money - the first time the others went to work and he was in a hurry because of nothing to do and was afraid of being marginalized.

"His family lives by the sea and owns a deep-sea fishing boat." Elijah said, "And their village had set up a collective factory as early as the 1980s. Later, it developed into a deep-sea fishing fleet with the village giving them dividends every year reaching millions!"

Alright, this was indeed not something ordinary families could compare to.

"So, how did he waste it?"

"After returning from the army, he had nothing to do and didn’t want to work in the factory, so he just stayed at home, playing games online, and then met a female friend in the game, and they got into an online relationship."

Online relationship? An old term, Sean thought.

"Before coming here, the two met up in person." Elijah said, suddenly laughing, "Douglas was said to be very attentive online, buying equipment, character skins, clothes, and stuff for the girl. But when they met, he was shocked and ran to me!"

"Why? Because the other person was a dinosaur?" Sean asked puzzledly.

"If it were a dinosaur, Douglas would have accepted it," Elijah continued with a laugh, "After all, they had known each other for so long. But who would have thought that the other part would be a man, and a fierce-looking one at that! Hahahaha!"

Sean laughed as well, realizing that the world was indeed full of surprises!

No wonder Douglas was so smitten with Freya upon their first meeting; his starting point was just too low!

As the two chatted, the noise outside suddenly stopped.

"Has the wind stopped?" Sean asked.

Elijah was sitting by the crevice and quickly lifted the cover to check before extending his hand out to test.

"It really has stopped!"

"That’s great!" Sean checked the time and said, "Well, not bad! In about two hours, it’ll be daybreak, and we can set off."

Elijah went outside and stretched, then suddenly poked his head back in to say to Sean:

"Boss, I think we should pack up and leave now. Looking at the sky, there won’t be any more wind. The stars are faintly starting to appear."

Sean was surprised but quickly understood.

Elijah was probably afraid that the unknown creature would come back!

If it were a wolf or something, at least they could be somewhat prepared.

But this creature, like the pangolin and Tu Xingsun, was impossible to guard against!

"Alright, let’s go!" Sean said, "I’m tired of staying here anyway."

The two hurriedly packed their stuff, burying any garbage on the spot, and Sean’s bag was much lighter now.

The two of them, one in front and one behind, both carrying guns, hurried back.

"Aw, how miserable!" Sean looked at the situation on the side of the mountain and sighed.

Quite a few yellow sheep and other small animals had been killed by the windsand, lying stiff on the ground.

"That’s how the environment is." Elijah said, "If we hadn’t found that place, we probably wouldn’t be any better off."

Under the power of nature, humans seem especially insignificant.

By the time the two returned to the tent camp, the eastern sky was starting to turn fish-belly white.

However, Sean noticed that their group was already up and about.

Seeing Sean and Elijah, Douglas excitedly shouted:

"Boss, Captain Hastings, you’re back, that’s great!"

Grant Kenneth and Willow Taylor also crawled out of their tents.

Sean noticed that they had parked the three vehicles in a triangular formation, with the truck blocking the wind and the tents set up in the middle, which was a fairly wise choice.

By now, half of the truck on the windward side was buried in windsand, showing the fierceness of the storm last night!

"Are you all okay?" Douglas asked with concern, "Did you encounter any danger?"

"Not bad." Sean asked, "Where are the others?"

Lincoln Harrington hadn’t come out, and neither had the other male and female. Where had they gone?

"At midnight, that Jenny went to the restroom when we entered the car to get supplies, and Webb accompanied her, then the two of them disappeared somewhere and never returned. Later, when the wind stopped, Lincoln went to look for them..."

Douglas’s words shocked Sean and Elijah!

"What were you doing?" Elijah punched Douglas in the chest, "You can’t even watch a person properly? What if there’s danger? How could you let Lincoln go and look alone?"

Douglas lowered his head, blushing with shame.

Sean came over to comfort Elijah:

"Don’t worry, Lincoln is probably fine. Douglas most likely couldn’t stop Lincoln anyway... Let’s just discuss how to find them."
