Chapter 230: Chapter 209: Terrifying Ruin Site!_2
Thank God.
That was an overreaction.
The Sky Eye swept across, and in the underground warehouse, there was still a considerable amount of gold, gemstones, food, medicinal materials, armor, and weapons.
However, the underground warehouse was quite deep. Sean Knight pondered for a moment before deciding to dig a bit more.
The more of these items, the better!
Just as he started digging, he heard a scream!
It was Mila’s voice!
Sean Knight immediately stood up and looked in her direction!
He saw Mila first hopping on the spot, then running toward him like a madwoman!
Elijah Hastings and Lincoln Harrington were the first to sprint to her side. One of them caught up to Mila, hit her repeatedly, then pulled her along as he ran, while the other ran over to drag Hans Hunter.
All four of them were running towards Sean Knight!
What’s happening?
Sean Knight was a bit stunned!
When they were still three to four hundred meters away from Sean Knight, Elijah Hastings shouted at the top of his lungs:
"Boss! Run! There are ants!"
Ants?
What was wrong with the ants?
Sean Knight was confused.
"Carnivorous ants!" Elijah supplementing his earlier statement, reminding Sean Knight of the old tales he’d heard about these ants, he suddenly remembered, his face quickly changing colors!
He screamed loudly:
"Septimus Coleman, we’re in danger! Run!"
Guide Septimius Coleman was still over there, he didn’t want this short native guide to die at the mouth of the ants!
Then, grabbing his backpack, he dashed toward the jungle in the same direction as the other four!
Sean Knight sometimes turned his head and saw a swarm of black dots emerging from a place and chasing after them!
Luckily, they weren’t moving very fast, at least not faster than the people.
"Mila was bitten!" Elijah said as he ran, "The ants are as big as finger segments. A single bite can bite off a chunk of flesh the size of a green bean — they really do eat flesh!"
Upon reaching the jungle and exiting the city ruins, Mila and Hans couldn’t run anymore.
The five of them slowed down, catching their breaths while walking. Sean Knight asked:
"Where did the ants come from?"
Mila staggered, holding her chest as she spoke:
"I was digging in a house near the edge, I dug up a gemstone, very beautiful. So I continued digging and, to my surprise, I dug up a few ants. I was afraid they might bite me, so I stomped on them. I didn’t expect..."
Thinking back to the earlier scene, Mila was still terrified!
Even without a fear of swarming insects, seeing so many ants pouring out from the ground was enough to scare her to the brink of collapsing — and then she got bitten.
"It hurt so much! It was a burning kind of pain!"
Sean Knight understood that the formic acid excreted by the ants had seeped into her skin or wound which felt like a burning sting.
"They probably can’t catch up to us. Let’s circle back in a while, get our backpacks and leave. This place is too dangerous!" Sean Knight suggested.
"Alright." Hans felt a little reluctant. Among the group, he was the only one who hadn’t found anything. It seemed that his luck had completely vanished with the sinking treasure.
After treating her wound, Mila said, "I agree, this place is too dangerous. Risking our lives for some treasures isn’t worth it."
Then, she revealed the gem. Oval-shaped and as big as a pigeon egg, milky white — very pretty.
Sean Knight instinctively scanned it with Sky Eye and was taken aback!
"This isn’t a gem, it should be some kind of egg!"
Sean Knight’s blurted out comment caught everyone off guard!
This object looked exactly like a beautifully polished gem!
"It’s not soft, it’s quite hard." Mila shook her head, not believing him, "It should be a gem."
"You should try it out." Sean Knight shook his head in return, then instinctively turned his head and shrieked:
"The ants have caught up!"
The others looked back and saw the swarm of ants bearing down on them once again!
And wherever the ants went, they stripped plants bare. They even climbed trees and bit small birds, causing them to fall, only to be reduced to white bones afterwards!
Further on, all those white bones disappeared into the ant colony!
Such voracious creatures!
Sean Knight dreaded to imagine what would happen if they all fell into the ant colony!
Without needing him to remind them, the other four people bolted again!
After running for nearly another kilometer, Mila and Hans could no longer keep going, taking another break.
However, they had underestimated the ants’ tenacity. Within just over ten minutes, the ants were on their trail again!
Their speed was extremely fast! Beyond their expectations!
Another escape—but this time, fortune deserted them. There was a river up ahead!
Although the river was only forty or fifty meters wide, it effectively blocked their path!
"Let’s run downstream along the river!" Lincoln Harrington suggested. There were no boats or bridges in sight, so the only thing they could do was run along the river.
The others had no objections, and they continued to dash along the river.
And so, they continued their walk-stop-walk routine. Two hours later, Hans and Mila Ward, couldn’t keep going, and they stopped at a river branch mouth.
"Let’s rest, rest. I can’t run anymore." Hans collapsed to the ground, waved his hand and said, "The ants should not be able to catch up with us!"
But Sean was not so optimistic. Those ants were extremely tenacious!
He said to Mila again:
"You’d better check out the item you found. It is probably an egg! Maybe these ants are after us just for that egg!"
But Mila was still somewhat hesitant.
On the journey so far, she did not dispute anything, so her presence wasn’t very strong.
However, she had personally dug out this "gemstone", and she really liked it very much!
Seeing Mila’s hesitation, Sean was originally going to insist, but then decided against it.
On the way, Mila wasn’t like Jason and Wilson who said one thing and did another. Although she didn’t talk much, she was always cooperative.
So, under not very dangerous circumstances, Sean still maintained his patience.
"How about we try something." Sean said to Mila, "We take your ’gemstone’ to the ants, place it somewhere, then we retreat. If the ants carry this thing away, then my guess is right. If not, then I will compensate you for your gemstone."
"I don’t need compensation, just ensure that this gemstone can be retrieved later!" Mila replied.
"Alright!" Sean thought he had the ability to do just that—Carnivorous Ants might be powerful, but they aren’t unlimited, there’s always a range.
Anyway, they had plenty of time right now. As long as Mila and Hans were settled, there was enough time to deal with the Carnivorous Ants.
After resting for a while, although reluctant, Mila still followed Sean and Elijah towards where the ants were coming from.
Lincoln and Hans continued walking slowly downstream.
Sean, Mila, and Elijah hadn’t walked back more than 500 meters when they saw the ants rushing towards them!
So fast!
Sean and Elijah were both taken aback! The persistence of these ants was beyond their expectations!
"Quick, put your ’gemstone’ in a conspicuous place!" Sean said to Mila.
Reluctantly, Mila put the "gemstone" on a rock.
"Okay, let’s retreat!" Sean commanded immediately.
Elijah led Mila to retreat over fifty meters away. Mila then stopped in her tracks, refusing to go any further.
All three of them were fixedly staring at the "gemstone" on the rock.
They saw the ants growing nearer and nearer, until suddenly, the ants split into two groups - one group climbed onto the rock and "carried" away the gemstone!
But the other group kept rushing towards them!
This outcome was completely different from everyone’s expectations!
Mila then realized, the so-called "gemstone" might indeed be an egg. Otherwise, why would the ants need it?
"We should run!" Elijah said worriedly.
"Go!" Sean suddenly had an insight, "Probably you carried the smell of the egg, Mila. Also, I fear they’re chasing us not just for revenge, but also considering us as their food!"
As soon as he finished speaking, Elijah and Mila immediately agreed, and the three of them started to sprint again!
Who could have thought that ants could run so fast!
Half an hour later, they caught up with Lincoln and Hans. Only this time, they all stopped in their tracks!
This was a fork in the great river!
Ahead, there was no way forward!
Positioned at a sharp angle, if they turned back or walked along the other river tributary, they would surely run into a large ants’ procession!
