Chapter 226: Chapter 207: Evil Spirits Linger or Shadow Warriors Passing?_2

Before them sprawled a vast clearing, densely packed with people, all on their knees!

A towering Maya-style pyramid covered in gold ornaments, and bizarrely shaped totem pillars lent an eerie feel to the scene.

It was clear that a ceremony was taking place here.

A resplendent-robed priest wore an ornate headdress decorated with feathers, and in his hands, he held a long wooden staff embedded with a huge sapphire.

He slowly moved towards the high platform—beneath his feet, a brightly colored carpet was spread out.

On both sides of the carpet stood rows of scantily clad beautiful girls, each holding various offerings in their hands—various fresh fruits, exquisitely prepared delicacies.

Many more were rare and exotic treasures, gold products, and so on.

The priest went up the pyramid where there was a huge golden statue at the top, the very same one Sean Knight and his companions had seen in the underground hall!

The priest knelt down humbly before the statue, prostrating himself for a while. When he stood up, he spoke loudly. Although Sean and the others couldn’t hear him, they sensed the mystery and holiness around him.

Finally, the priest finished his speech, raised his staff, and suddenly the sky above changed. The originally clear day turned cloudy, with wisps of clouds drifting in and faint flashes of lightning visible!

The kneeling people immediately bowed down, almost lying flat on the ground, as the girls brought the offerings up to the high platform, one item at a time, and placed them around the statue. Then, the girls retreated.

Brave warriors led several captives onto the platform. The priest shouted something silently, and the warriors slaughtered the captives on the platform!

Lightning struck down from the sky, hitting the statue and sending sparks flying. The lightning even charred a nearby warrior!

The priest’s expression turned fanatical, seemingly not fearing the lightning but growing more excited!

He raised his hands high again and shouted something, prompting even more lightning in the sky. In the end, a thick bolt of lightning struck the priest directly!

People below were stunned for a moment, then began to panic and scatter in all directions!

But unbelievably, the priest was unscathed after being struck by lightning!

Then, they could no longer tell whether the water vapor vanished or if the scene just ended!

Nothing was visible anymore, but everyone’s gaze still lingered on that spot.

What they had just witnessed was truly shocking!

After a while, Elijah Hastings suddenly asked a question:

"Did you guys feel like the priest’s face looked somewhat familiar?"

Lincoln Harrington glanced at Sean Knight and hesitated to say anything.

Hans Hunter suddenly said:

"I think—that priest looks like Sean ten years from now."

Mila Ward quickly nodded her head in agreement.

Then Sean saw Septimius Coleman once again bowing before him, banging his head on the ground!

He hurriedly picked up the troublemaking dwarf and shook his head, saying:

"I don’t think it looks like me at all! Do I look that creepy?"

"It’s your visual distortion. I think it’s quite similar." Elijah replied seriously.

"Enough, enough! Let’s not talk about this. We all know that this is probably some kind of magnetic phenomenon that left an image of something from hundreds or even thousands of years ago, similar to the reported specter of ghostly soldiers passing through!"

"Yeah, that’s the idea." Hans and Mila both nodded in agreement.

Elijah and Lincoln were a bit confused, but after Sean explained it simply, they nodded as if they understood.

"It’s like a camcorder. Some specific natural environments act as a camcorder, recording images from a certain period. Later, under specific circumstances, the images appear."

"Ah! Why didn’t we use our mobile phone to record it then?" Mila suddenly lamented, "It would have been such an incredible scene!"

The others also expressed similar regrets.

Sean Knight laughed and said:

"Alright, let’s go. This place isn’t safe. Look, the edges of the hollow place are still sinking. Who knows if the next moment it will affect here?"

Everyone else immediately grabbed their backpacks and headed back the way they came.

After walking several kilometers, Elijah Hastings suddenly asked:

"Wait a minute! Where did that bizarre totem pillar go?"

The others also realized that they didn’t see the totem pillar!

They took the same path, but the totem pillar was gone?

However, it wasn’t the time to investigate this issue, so everyone remained puzzled for a moment and then continued on their way.

It was getting dark, and they were in a hurry. Sean Knight suggested:

"Let’s find a flat spot up ahead and rest. We should be safe here."

Everyone else was tired, hungry, and exhausted, so they stopped at a relatively flat place ahead.

As usual, Elijah Hastings went hunting, while the others set up their tents.

Although they had fewer supplies, there were fewer people too. Apart from food and water, they had enough of everything else.

Sean set up his own tent and then helped Hans Hunter and Mila Ward. Lincoln Harrington went to collect firewood and water from nearby.

There was no shortage of water in this jungle, which saved a lot of trouble.

Soon, Elijah came back with a small capybara, grumbling as he walked:

"There’s not much to eat in such a big jungle! I’m tired of eating this every day!"

Hans joked:

"Elijah, be content! It’s good to have food! The last time we came here, I was hungry for three days and had already learned to eat bugs..."

Upon hearing this, Mila almost threw up.

Bugs, oh, so disgusting!

Sean thought to himself that it was indeed wise to bring Elijah along. If he had followed Jason and the others alone, he would probably have suffered a lot by now.

This day had been too surreal for everyone. After dinner, nobody felt like talking. Elijah and Lincoln took turns keeping watch as the others rested.

Sean was also exhausted and soon fell into a deep sleep.

But his sleep was restless – in his dream, he became the priest, walking on the high terrace of the pyramid. The girls on both sides dared not look at him, showing a mixture of admiration and fear on their faces.

Sean knew that this was a dream and that he was not the priest, but he could not control the priest’s actions. From a first-person perspective, he went through the ritual process.

Then Sean understood what the priest or "he" was shouting:

"People! The gods have begun to abandon us; they are not what they used to be! We need to believe in the true god! Trust me, I will lead you to the true god and offer him our devotion so that he will continue to protect us..."

Then there was lightning!

It seemed as if the heavens were truly angered by the priest’s words, sending down lightning to strike him dead!

The people of the Maya tribe trembled with fear, bowing even lower, yet the priest faced the lightning without fear!

Indeed, the lightning could not harm him!

Sean was very puzzled, he even felt the energy of the lightning passing through him. Some of the energy remained in his body, and the rest was transferred to the ground beneath him, leading underground.

"Boom!"

Another, even larger, bolt of lightning struck down!

The deafening noise woke Sean from his sleep - the sky above the jungle was covered with dark clouds, and thunder roared!

At that very moment, Elijah suddenly shouted: "Who’s there?"

Then there was a gunshot and a muffled groan from Elijah. Everyone jumped up!

Lincoln was the first out of his tent. He seemed to notice something and chased after it with his gun!

"Lincoln, come back!" Sean glanced over and saw a small, monkey-like figure disappearing into the jungle. Fearing that Lincoln might be led into an ambush, he immediately summoned him back.

Lincoln obediently returned, still looking displeased.

Sean walked over to Elijah and saw a thin wooden thorn sticking in his arm. He recognized it as a blow arrow!

Everyone else woke up too. Septimius Coleman came over immediately and, after speaking a few words, abruptly pulled the arrow out.

Mila translated:

"He said the arrow is not poisonous, they probably don’t want to kill us."

Was there no ill intent or was there a hidden agenda?

"Yes, I don’t feel anything special." Elijah said, looking up at the sky. "We’d better get ready, it looks like it’s going to rain."

After discussing it, they decided to stay where they were. Thankfully, their tents were waterproof, so they only needed to move to higher ground.

Sean’s thoughts, however, were on that shadow. He activated his Sky Eye to look around but didn’t find any trace of it.

Was it just passing by?

Or was there some other purpose?
