Chapter 216: Chapter 202: Almost Died Once!_2
Sean Knight looked up subconsciously, surprised to find that the large half-moon seemed to carry a hint of green!
Something was wrong!
Sean immediately went forward and shook Wilson hard.
"Huh..."
Wilson finally woke up, but his eyes were somewhat unfocused, still a little groggy.
Sean directly slapped him across the face several times:
"Wake up! Something’s happening!"
Without waiting for an answer, he headed straight for the tent where Elijah Hastings and Lincoln Harrington were. Pulling it open, he found that both of them were asleep.
Normally, their alertness would ensure their waking if someone opened the tent.
The fact they did not wake up, even though they could be heard breathing, suggested that there was an issue with the air!
Sean vigorously woke up Elijah and Lincoln:
"Get up, there’s something wrong here! We need to leave quickly!"
As Elijah and Lincoln woke up, they quickly realised the situation and immediately got up to wake the others.
It took more than ten minutes to wake everyone up - Hans Hunter, Mila and an injured mercenary were sleeping deeply, almost impossible to wake up.
"What’s going on?" Everyone asked in confusion.
Sean thought for a moment and said:
"I’m not sure why, but there might be some sort of anesthetic or sleepy gas in the air. We can’t stay here, let’s leave quickly!"
Everyone felt a bit weak, but knew that if they continued to remain in this place, they might never wake up.
Once everything was packed up, the group determined the direction and hurriedly departed.
Sean kept observing and discovered that the faint green tint in the atmosphere had not dissipated - that worried him even more!
The situation also affected everyone’s speed. They started off quickly, but as they went on, their steps got smaller and their bodies weaker.
Knowing they couldn’t continue like this, Sean called out loudly:
"Those who can’t go on, discard unimportant things from your backpacks! We might find them later! Priority now is to keep moving!"
The others knew the gravity of the situation and did as told – apart from necessary items like food and weapons, everything else was discarded.
With lighter loads, they were able to move faster.
The injured mercenary was already weak and showed signs of passing out, muttering about being sleepy.
Jason, with a ruthless look on his face, pulled out his military sword and made a small cut on the man’s arm. Then he quickly applied medicine to stop the bleeding.
The jolt of pain surprisingly revitalized the mercenary, who stopped complaining about being sleepy.
After several hours of continuous walking, even Sean was feeling exhausted. The sky was starting to lighten, but the strange gas still hadn’t dissipated.
Sean was anxious. He knew that if they continued to stay in this environment much longer, even he couldn’t bear it.
Hans needed assistance to keep moving. Although Mila was still walking, her bag was almost empty. As for Elijah and Lincoln, they still had their large backpacks and didn’t throw away too much.
When Sean looked over, Elijah joked,
"Boss, this is nothing. We’ve gone through training where we didn’t sleep for three days and nights, covered 150 kilometers carrying our weapons. This is much easier!"
Sean wasn’t sure whether Elijah and Lincoln were joking or being serious.
However, it was clear to see that both of them were in a better condition than Jason and the others.
Finally, the sun rose.
Sean was surprised to find that the green haze in the air was fading!
The mysterious sleep-inducing gas seemed to be gradually dissipating!
He immediately yelled out:
"We’re fine now. The sun’s out! Let’s rest for a bit! The unknown anesthetic gas seems to be dissipating!"
Once Sean said that, the rest of the group immediately relaxed.
Sean knew that they could no longer keep going. He took them to a flat area where the sun was shining, cajoling and dragging the others along.
Some people were leaning against their backpacks, while others lay directly on the ground. None of them had any desire to move.
Sean was also exhausted, though he was in a much better condition than the rest.
He took out a bottle of water and gulped down a large mouthful. Only then did it soothe his parched throat.
Elijah quietly asked,
"Sean, you’re truly remarkable. Mr. Hans inviting you to aid in the treasure hunt was a great idea. Otherwise, it’s likely that we would have died in our sleep!"
Sean knew that Elijah wasn’t exaggerating.
Had he not woken everyone in the middle of the night, they would have slept through and possibly never woken up.
After a half-hour’s rest, Hans struggled to his feet. He walked over to Sean and sincerely said,
"Sean, you’ve saved our lives again!"
The reason for ’again’ is because back in the Man-eating Flower’s Territory, if it weren’t for Sean and his team, Hans Hunter could very well be flower fertilizer by now.
"We’re partners, there’s no need to keep mentioning it. I have my share of the treasure thanks to you!"
Sean’s little joke eased Hans’ apprehension.
Jason and the others also came over to express their gratitude one by one, and upon seeing Wilson Johnson’s face covered in handprints, Sean couldn’t help but find it amusing.
Thinking that the rest had had enough rest, Sean spoke:
"Have something to eat, then let’s keep moving. The scent in the air has weakened, but it isn’t completely gone. We need to remain vigilant."
Actually, those present, especially Mila and the injured mercenary, were already dozing off.
The companions quickly woke them up, hastily had some breakfast, and then continued on.
They didn’t think about retrieving the things they had discarded for the time being.
After moving forward another dozen kilometers, Sean noticed that the group could hardly walk any longer and the scent in the air was nearly undetectable. He decided to stop in a flat area.
"Alright, let’s rest and catch some sleep."
Sean Knight was effectively now acting as the team leader.
Even Sean felt a bit sleepy himself, but didn’t dare sleep. Instead, he decided to observe the surroundings.
The trees here were still relatively sparse, but they were quite large in size.
The amount of empty land was plentiful, with some areas vaguely appearing to be paths.
Almost no remnants of structures like stone platforms were visible, and the ones that were left were substantially smaller.
Sean knew that they had left the area of the previous Maya city.
During their previous trek through the city, they were in such a rush they hadn’t noticed whether there were any hidden treasure rooms or the like.
Sean was almost certain that this relic had never been explored before. Apart from the natives and invaders, their group was essentially the first to arrive.
It was a shame that they had passed through in a hurry without exploring.
Sean was also a bit curious, if the treasure was not in this city, where else could it be?
Typically, wouldn’t such treasures be located within the natives’ settlements?
While he was lost in thought, Sean heard a clear gunshot. He immediately rushed back to the rest area.
Elijah Hastings emerged from the forest, carrying a pig-like creature weighing about twenty to thirty kilograms in his hands.
Elijah threw the hunt on the ground, laughed, and said:
"I never would have thought we’d stumble upon this here."
Sean took a closer look, and said:
"It should be a Capybara."
"Regardless, let’s eat! We need to replenish our meat intake!"
Soon after, Elijah and Lincoln Harrington efficiently butchered the Capybara, then began boiling the meat.
Mila raised a concern:
"Don’t you think this could attract carnivorous beasts?"
Upon hearing this, the others, including Jason, started laughing.
They were weakened to some extent, but they all had guns!
They weren’t afraid of any wild beasts!
If any beasts did come, it would just be more meat for them!
The seasonings in Sean’s backpack hadn’t been thrown away, they came quite handy now.
It didn’t take long for everyone to be enticed by the aroma.
The Capybara was large enough for everyone to have a portion. After the strenuous travel, they were all famished and worn out. Some couldn’t even resist swallowing their saliva.
Sean couldn’t help but feel proud.
Fortunately, Elijah and Lincoln were with him. Otherwise, this trip would have been tough to manage.
Once the meat was ready, everyone took a piece and began munching away.
Wilson Johnson, as he was gnawing, commented:
"It would be even better if we could have grilled some!"
Elijah, gnawing on his meat, replied:
"There are more pieces of meat. If you don’t mind having parasites all over your body, you’re welcome to grill some!"
Upon hearing this, Wilson’s face turned beet-red, but he understood Elijah’s point.
Out in the wild, apart from carrying bacteria, there were also parasites. If not handled well, you’re just waiting to be their host!
