Chapter 203: Chapter 196: This treasure hunt is not easy! _2
Old people are crafty, you can’t trust them!
Hans left the bar, and Sean Knight approached the counter.
While wiping a wine glass, Mr. John asked:
"No deal?"
"No." Sean replied, twirling the bronze pen in his hand. "He said that if we find the treasure, he’ll give me fifty percent. When I asked for a partial reward in advance, he said no."
"That Hans, always trying to get something for nothing! As usual! "Mr. John scoffed, "You did right, Sean, this tricky old man always pulls these stunts!"
"John, tell me more about Hans. I’m guessing he won’t give up that easily."
Mr. John went over Hans’ life story.
What he said wasn’t much different from what Hans told. His mother was seriously ill, and his father was critically injured on a treasure hunt and died shortly after. His mother passed away later too.
Hans started to make a living from reselling goods. However, contrary to his claims, he didn’t entirely devote himself to treasure hunting.
"Hans has a keen sense for trade, and he often collects insignificant items that are quite valuable. That’s how he made a fortune. His net worth is at least a million now. So be careful not to be fooled!"
Sean nodded to indicate that he understood.
After leaving the bar, Sean went to the freight yard.
Upon seeing Sean, Jason got very excited and shouted, "Boss!" as he ran over.
Sean saw people drifting away from the yard in small groups, so he guessed that the container bidding must have just ended.
"How did the auction go?"
"Great!" Jason was thrilled. "We had just finished auctioning off six containers. On average, each one sold for fifteen thousand dollars! One of them had a heavy cargo lift inside and was auctioned off for over forty thousand dollars!"
Sean figured this should be one of the highest bids ever in the container auction history.
No wonder Jason was excited!
With each container selling for an average of fifteen thousand, six of them made ninety thousand dollars. After deducting costs, they had a profit of seventy or eighty thousand. This was much faster than treasure hunting!
"Give everyone a hundred dollar bonus, and you take a thousand." Sean said.
"Thank you, boss!" Jason promptly announced the news.
The workers cheered joyfully. They were naturally happy to receive an extra day’s wages.
Sean symbolically checked the account book while Jason said:
"Ms. Kathy sends someone to check the accounts every week. Sometimes she comes personally. Our accountants have learned a lot."
So, Sean understood. Kathy took the freight yard very seriously.
He then visited the other two yards with Jason. Seeing that they were all bustling, Sean corrected a worker who hadn’t worn his safety helmet correctly, and then left satisfied.
The next day, Hans didn’t call. Instead, Elijah Hastings told Sean that his comrades had arrived.
Sean went to Elijah’s rental house. There, besides Elijah, two other men were looking at him somewhat apprehensively.
"Don’t be nervous. We’re all compatriots here, no need for that." Sean greeted them with a smile, "I’m Sean Knight, as you should already know. What should I call you?"
"My name is Douglas Cooper."
"I am Lincoln Harrington."
The two men introduced themselves quickly.
Elijah is 1.75 meters tall and of a balanced weight; his two comrades are more distinctive in stature.
Douglas, true to his name, is nearly 1.9 meters tall and weighs at least 80 kilograms. His muscles were quite prominent.
His face, on the other hand, was chubby and he seemed rather friendly, always smiling at people.
Lincoln Harrington looks serious, about 1.7 meters tall and a bit thin. Sean doubted he even weighed sixty kilograms.
Both of them had buzz cut hair and their military demeanor was obvious.
"Since you’re here, I’m guessing Elijah has filled you in. When in Rome, we must support each other. How is your English?"
"I only went to high school, so I’ve completely forgotten my English." Douglas replied candidly.
"I can barely communicate in English, but I need some time to adapt." Lincoln said.
"Well, the first step is to get your language skills up to par." Sean said, "Elijah will take you to the freight yard to work. As for wages, it’s a thousand dollars per week. By the way, there might be a job coming up, a treasure hunt in the Amazon forest. When the time comes, Elijah and Lincoln will go. The specific reward for that will be discussed separately but it’s not expected to be less than fifty thousand."
"No, boss!" On hearing this, Douglas was instantly anxious and quickly responded with a grin: "Boss, boss, I am familiar with the jungle! I was among the best in the whole regiment at jungle camouflage and cross-country traverses! Can’t you bring me along this time?"
"No," Sean shook his head, "Get through the language barrier first. If we go, there will definitely be many people in the team. If you’re the only one who doesn’t understand, and you get separated from me and Elijah, won’t that be troublesome?"
Douglas saw that Sean was adamant and had to give in. Such a shame to miss out on that thirty or so thousand! All from a single trip!
However, he immediately recovered.
Elijah wasn’t wrong!
What a generous boss!
One trip equates to more than thirty thousand. Even though it wasn’t as much as Elijah had said, it was at least that!
There will be opportunities in the future!
It seemed that he must pick up his rusty English skills soon!
Who could have thought that one day he would actually need it?
There was a glint in Lincoln’s eyes, indicating willingness but overall, his expression remained calm.
He was a pretty savvy fellow!
Sean called Jason and then took Elijah, Lincoln, and Douglas to the new house Jason had bought - Yes, Jason had moved to a new home.
Working with Sean for over half a year, Jason had earned more than 100,000 dollars. Sean lent him some money, and he was able to buy a detached house not far from the villa.
Most of the time, Elijah ate at Jason’s place.
He paid a symbolic fee for meals, making things more convenient.
When they arrived at Jason’s house and saw Chinese food being served, Douglas was surprised:
"Do you still eat this here?"
Elijah rolled his eyes at him:
"Just be content! Otherwise, I’ll go out and buy you a hot dog or hamburger, do you want to eat that?"
"Forget it!"
Freya was happy to see Sean and she gave him a smile. Wearing her apron, she quickly retreated back to the kitchen to continue cooking.
Lincoln watched all this silently.
Potato Beef Stew, Big Plate Chicken, fried fish pieces, fried lamb chops, and a few cold dishes were served. They had a drink to welcome Douglas and Lincoln.
Initially, Douglas and Lincoln were a bit reserved, but after a few drinks Lincoln relaxed and Douglas started to treat Sean like a brother.
At this moment, Sean received an unexpected phone call and stepped outside.
Elijah immediately started lecturing Douglas.
Sean is the boss. If he doesn’t put on airs, that’s up to him. But if you behave like this, you won’t be able to continue working here.
Douglas blushed as he hung his head in embarrassment.
Jason, whose Mandarin had improved rapidly over the past six months, patted Douglas on the shoulder and said:
"Sean won’t mind, he’s a good boss. That’s exactly why we should respect him. Alright, let’s eat. If nothing unexpected happens, you guys might have a new assignment soon!"
The call was from Mr. Hans, he hadn’t held out after all.
Sean was pleased to have guessed right but didn’t let it show in his voice. Instead, he asked courteously:
"Mr. Hans, have you made a decision?"
Mr. Hans sighed and said:
"Mr. Sean Knight, I don’t believe you fully understand the treasure I am seeking—"
"I only wish for more assurance," Sean interrupted him.
"Alright then. I have a suggestion, I have quite a few collectibles, some of which are from China. If you’re interested in any of them..."
Sean wondered, might you have heard about Penson getting me that Bronze Man?
Guess he’s lucky that Americans don’t pay much attention to international affairs, particularly those concerning China.
Wonder what Penson would have thought if he knew somebody offered 1.5 billion RMB, which is 150 million dollars, for that Bronze Man?
Especially when the total value of the treasure Penson got from his hunt wasn’t even 100 million dollars!
In that case, why not go see?
If he could obtain another heavyweight item, he would be thrilled!
Of course, this was just Sean’s thought.
However, who knows, it might come true after all?
