Chapter 202: Chapter 196: This treasure hunt is not easy!
Mr. John sent Sean Knight and Hans Hunter to the table to discuss the matter while he leisurely wiped wine glasses, clearly not interested in getting involved with the treasure hunting business.
With Mr. John’s attitude clear, Hans sighed as he sat at the table and said:
"Actually, Mr. John was once a pretty good treasure hunter. I wanted to ask for his help, but he refused before I could even open my mouth."
Sean was surprised. Mr. John is a treasure hunter too?
Never would have guessed.
Hans grabbed a beer and drank it before continuing:
"You see, I’m not originally from New York. I moved here when I was in my twenties.
My father was a treasure hunter. Although he never found any world-shaking treasures, our family lived comfortably.
The last treasure hunt my father embarked on was to find the lost Maya treasure in the Amazon Jungle.
At that time, my mother was seriously ill, and my father hoped to find the treasure and make enough money to cure her.
However, when my father finally emerged from the Amazon Jungle, he only brought back a golden goblet and numerous wounds. Not long after his return, he passed away, leaving behind a diary."
We sold the goblet to pay for my mother’s medical treatment, but her illness never fully healed...
Hans probably hadn’t spoken about this to anyone in a long time, and he rambled on for quite a while.
It was like an elderly man telling his younger generation about the first half of his life.
Hans found clues about the treasure in his father’s diary.
The diary stated that the treasure was left behind by a Mayan wizard and contained a large quantity of gold and silver items. Hans’s father only found the peripheral residence of the tribe where the wizard lived, while the real treasure was hidden in another place of sacrifice.
His father, wanting to venture deeper, was attacked by the residents of a primitive tribe and had to return hurriedly. He planned to recover and go back, but he never had the chance again.
When Hans was young, he too wanted to go treasure hunting, but he got lost in the Amazon Jungle not long after entering. Eventually, he encountered a tribe that had dealings with the outside world and was sent back out.
Although he tried to find the treasure with others later, it either ended halfway or they returned empty-handed.
Hans was also a collector, or perhaps more of a cultural relic trafficker. He had made some money by buying and selling relics, but most of it was spent on treasure hunts.
Sean asked a question:
"Have you ever considered that the treasure might be fake, or that you simply aren’t destined to find it?"
Hans sighed and said:
"I’ve thought about that too. But on the two trips I took, the second one was the most well-prepared and the closest I’ve ever come to the treasure!
I even heard the legend of the wizard from a jungle tribe and saw some simple murals that proved the existence of the treasure..."
Once Hans finished talking about the treasure, he stared directly at Sean:
"Sean, I know that you have incredible luck! Every time you search for treasure, you never return empty-handed! I hope to borrow your luck to find this treasure and make sure my father and I don’t take this wish to heaven with us unfulfilled!"
To be honest, Sean was quite intrigued.
It wasn’t just about the treasure, but also because he had obtained so much information from the Crystal Skull in his mind, and he could only verify it by going to the Maya ruins.
However, if he were to go there alone, Sean would have to think it through carefully first.
But now there was an opportunity to travel there openly, with someone accompanying him and covering the expenses. So, why not go?
Yet his rational mind quickly suppressed this idea, and he asked Hans:
"How will the reward be calculated?"
"Fifty percent! As long as we find the treasure, you will get fifty percent!" A glimmer of hope shone in Hans’s eyes!
Hans had done a thorough investigation of Sean. He didn’t believe that Sean just had dumb luck like the people who were envious of him.
Finding treasure every time and returning unharmed without a scratch – this was not a simple matter of luck!
"No." Sean shook his head, "Your previous treasure hunts have yielded nothing. If I go and we still don’t get anything this time, won’t my trip be in vain?"
Hans didn’t expect Sean to resist such a tempting offer – helping someone else find treasure typically meant treasure hunters or hunters would take thirty percent, and this was practically an industry-wide acknowledged fee.
He directly offered fifty percent, but Sean didn’t bite. Clearly, this young man was not as simple as he seemed on the surface!
"But, I don’t have much cash on hand." Hans looked troubled, "I’ve staked almost all my assets on this final treasure hunt. I don’t want to end up penniless after this endeavor!"
Sean didn’t respond. That’s your problem, not mine.
"Sean, don’t you have confidence in finding the treasure?" Hans even tried the goading approach to persuade him, "Young man, you need to have some enthusiasm! Where’s your adventurous spirit?"
Sean shook his head and replied:
"Mr. Hans, you should have heard about me. I won’t go treasure hunting on my own without full assurance. And if I’m hunting treasure for someone else, I won’t go without adequate compensation!"
Seeing Sean’s resolute stance, Hans sighed and said:
"Alright then, I’ll go look for someone else."
Sean watched as Hans slowly stood up to leave. He was tempted to agree but his rational mind told him that Hans was not as emotional as he had portrayed himself just now.
