Chapter 196: Chapter 193: The century-old murder case!
Seeing the stinking skeletons in front of him, Sean Knight hastily retreated two steps, his face showing a perfect expression of panic.
Elijah Hastings quickly stepped forward, helped Sean up the stairs, and said to him:
"Boss, you go up and rest first, I’ll take care of this place."
"No, no, no, there’s no need." Sean gritted his teeth and looked up at George, saying:
"Mr. George, I suggest you call Mr. David right now, as these skeletons need to be dealt with by the manor’s master."
George naturally knew this, and he was also startled when he saw Sean dig up human bones with a shovel earlier!
Now recovering, George immediately called David and asked him to come over as soon as possible.
After receiving George’s phone call and making sure he wasn’t joking, David quickly arrived and showed a complex expression on his face as he saw the skeletons in the pit.
"Let’s seal off this place first," David announced after regaining his composure. "Everyone nearby should go elsewhere for now, and this place will be listed as a restricted area! You young men in the pit, come on up!"
Elijah looked at Sean, who shook his head and said:
"Mr. David, I’m sure there must be treasures buried beneath these skeletons, so I can’t leave yet."
George hastily relayed Sean’s previous explanation to David.
David’s expression grew complicated, and he said:
"If that’s the case, all right."
It was an hour later when the police arrived at the manor, where there were few people nearby.
With the help of the manor’s workers, and Sean and Elijah, they dug out three skeletons below.
The police station sent someone to examine the skeletons, saying that they were from centuries ago.
Although there were obvious wounds on the bones, suggesting murder, and even signs of binding with ropes, it was too old a case to investigate, so the matter was dropped.
The current master of the manor had only purchased it a few decades ago and couldn’t trace back that far, so the case was merely recorded, and the bones were buried elsewhere.
Sean and Elijah then resumed digging.
The two ate some dry food they had brought with them during the dig to replenish their energy and continued digging until they reached over four meters deep when they finally made a discovery!
Sean’s shovel hit something hard, and Elijah, hearing the sound, hurried over to help. They scraped off the mud above and revealed an iron box!
George had been watching from above, with David coming over from time to time to check as well.
Occasionally treasure hunters came by, but most kept their distance from the place where the skeletons had been dug up, as the smell had not yet completely dissipated.
Howard Kensington had been secretly mocking Sean for finding only skeletons instead of treasure, even thinking he might get implicated.
But now, seeing that Sean had not given up and was still digging, Howard began to secretly admire the Chinese boy’s perseverance!
Naturally, Howard didn’t want to admit defeat. He was also looking for possible treasure locations in a race against time.
He couldn’t lose to this Chinese boy!
When he heard the few treasure hunters at the big pit exclaim, Howard’s heart sank. Had they found the treasure over there?
Although he tried his best not to go over, his heart was still in turmoil, and he eventually followed the crowd to the pit.
Deep down in the pit, Sean and Elijah were struggling to lift the box out of the mud.
The iron box was very heavy, and the contents inside were not light either.
Fortunately, the box was half a meter long, about 30 centimeters wide, and 20 centimeters high, not too big.
The two men strained to lift the box onto the stairs, and then George had someone lower a rope from above, tie it around the box, and with people holding it from below, the box was quickly pulled up.
Sean and Elijah followed suit.
A crowd had gathered around the box, and when they saw Sean and Elijah coming, they immediately stepped aside.
Sean did not hesitate to take an iron shovel and broke the lock on the iron box in a few strokes, then opened the lid.
Two black objects appeared.
What were these?
People at the scene looked at each other in confusion; these didn’t seem to be treasures!
However, Sean didn’t wait for everyone to react, he used his iron shovel to "scoop" the two objects out of the box and started unraveling one of them.
As soon as the contents appeared, everyone understood!
The black objects turned out to be cowhide, wrapping the items inside.
As Sean stripped away the layers, the contents inside were revealed.
This was a roll of paper.
Thanks to the cowhide wrapping, the paper had not been soaked and ruined, and the writing on it was still clearly visible.
"Documents?" George showed a puzzled expression on his face.
Many of the treasure hunters showed disappointment or even mocking expressions.
These weren’t treasures!
Sean, however, picked up the documents and examined them closely.
The documents were written in cursive script, dating back to the American Civil War, also known as the North-South War.
There was even a letter addressed to the famous General Sheridan Philip of the time, along with a reply.
The content was impressive! It should be worth some money!
Sean smiled, took out a sealed bag from his backpack, and packed away the documents.
Seeing Sean’s actions, George couldn’t help but ask:
"Sean, what is that?"
"Some documents from the American Civil War."
George’s face immediately lit up with excitement:
"That must be quite valuable!"
Sean didn’t say anything and began to deal with the other roll of cowhide.
When this roll of cowhide was opened, the contents that were revealed made the onlookers’ eyes open wide!
Golden coins, silver coins, golden jewelry, gemstone rings, and so on!
