Chapter 192: Chapter 191: There’s Actually This Kind of Competition? (4000+)

The clouds dispersed and the rain ceased. Joanna nestled in Sean Knight’s arms, sharing her longings and mundane family matters.

In her heart, Joanna was profoundly grateful to Sean.

Her father planned to enter a new industry but was unable to find the necessary loans. The situation had left him in a foul mood which affected the whole family.

The atmosphere at home had been quite bad for a while, and Joanna didn’t know how to help her parents.

She hadn’t mentioned any of this to Sean, but to her surprise, upon learning about the situation, he immediately contacted her father and assured him that he wouldn’t hold the situation against them.

With both of the men who loved her most showing such concern for her, Joanna felt a deep sense of happiness.

The next day, as Joanna reluctantly went off to school, Sean received a phone call from George Thomas.

After leaving the Seven Axes Pub the day before, George received a call from Heine Victor to express his gratitude that evening.

Even though Heine couldn’t yet be sure whether the documents George had led him to contained the information he needed, he felt compelled to express his gratitude for George’s assistance in bringing him in contact with an important lead.

George was thrilled. He had successfully connected with Heine, and his relationship with Sean had improved, boosting his standing in New York’s treasure hunting community.

Therefore, George felt the need to show more initiative.

There was an upcoming gathering of treasure hunters, and he wanted Sean to attend.

"A treasure hunting contest?" Sean was surprised, "There are such events in New York?"

"Indeed." George explained with a smile, "Such events are more common in Europe, where there are many ancient castles with long histories. These venues often house forgotten treasures.

A treasure hunter had introduced this kind of activity here and it became immensely popular among local treasure hunters, so the tradition stuck."

"When and where is it?" Curious about the whole thing, Sean asked.

"Tomorrow, in a manor on the outskirts of the city. The property has some history to it. Before the Civil War, it used to belong to a slave owner. It has changed hands several times since, and rumours persist that treasure was once found there."

"Alright." Sean was interested, "Count me in."

George texted Sean the address and time before ending the call.

Sean found his perception of George shifting somewhat. The old man was not so bad after all.

He called Elijah Hastings and they went to buy metal detectors together.

This device was a must-have for any serious treasure hunter, and Sean didn’t want to stand out for lacking one. But given his limited skill, he figured it would at least serve as a decent prop.

"Are we going treasure hunting tomorrow?" Elijah asked curiously, "Am I coming too?"

"Sure, we’ll go together."

"Then I’ll buy one too."

Neither of them purchased expensive models, just regular ones priced around one thousand dollars.

Elijah, eager to try out his new gadget, was instructed by Sean to give it a test-run at the house he rented. Sean, on the other hand, returned home.

Upon his arrival, Kathy Lewis reported:

"Someone delivered an invitation for you. It’s for the upcoming treasure hunting contest."

This sparked Sean’s curiosity. His name had made it into the treasure hunting community and seemed to be quite well-received?

He accepted the invitation and examined it. The wording was polite, and both the time and location matched what George had told him. He set it aside, with the intention of attending the event the next day.

The following day, he met up with Elijah, who was excitedly playing with his metal detector. He asked:

"Got the hang of it?"

"Sure did. I even helped the landlord find a long-lost knife in the yard yesterday."

Sean laughed heartily; not bad at all, finding something on the first try.

The design of the metal detector was somewhat similar to a mine detector with a circular plate at the bottom and a sloping handle. There was a display screen on the handle that showed different values during detection.

This metal detector was quite practical. The handle was wrapped in synthetic leather, connecting better with the arm and allowing for a comfortable one-handed grip.

The two drove to the venue and found that many people had already gathered.

Most of them, like themselves, were carrying metal detectors, waiting to be let in.

Sean and Elijah approached the entrance showing their invitations, backpacks on their backs, shovels in one hand, metal detectors in the other.

Sean presented his invitation, and the person guarding the entrance immediately let them through.

Most of those gathered outside were amateur treasure hunters who had come to watch. Clearly, they would not be granted entrance.

"Why are they allowed in, and we aren’t?" A person complained loudly.

"Because they have invitations!" The gatekeeper explained, "They are professional treasure hunters, recognized hunters of treasure and nothing like you amateurs!"

"I don’t believe they are any better than us!" Someone grumbled in anger, "Once inside, I want to see what they can do!"

Some people echoed the sentiment, while others stood by and watched. Numerous spectators had come for the thrill of it, while others had come determined to make a name for themselves in the treasure hunting world by discovering a treasure.

George arrived ten minutes later. Not seeing Sean, he assumed that he hadn’t arrived and decided to call him.

Upon connecting the call, George said:

"Sean, haven’t you arrived yet? Contact me when you do, I have an invitation that will get us in."

Sean hadn’t considered that George might think that way, so he responded:

"I received an invitation yesterday and am already at the manor. You should come in as well, the professional treasure hunters are getting ready to start."

George was taken aback. He hadn’t expected that the event organizer would send an invitation directly to Sean!

But upon pondering, he realized it wasn’t entirely surprising. After all, despite his short time in the field, the high-profile cases Sean had been involved in had made noticeable waves, making it only natural he had drawn the attention of fellow treasure hunters.
