Chapter 151: Chapter 150: Cutting Off the Retreat
The secret door was right under the desk. Sean Knight found the spot to press down gently, causing the other side to lift up. Pinching the raised part, he slowly lifted it, revealing the hidden door below.
There was a ladder here. Sean Knight went down and saw that there was even a ventilation system inside, which should be connected to the outside. The air was not stuffy at all.
A few exquisite aluminum aviation boxes were neatly arranged in the corner of the cellar. Sean Knight packed them up directly, looked around to make sure there were no other items left behind, and left the cellar. He then closed the door, made another round in the room, locked the door and left.
Back at the new villa, Sean Knight went to the study and took out the boxes one by one for inspection.
The boxes were all locked, so Sean Knight used Sky Eye to see if there were any traps inside. Since there were none, he didn’t hesitate to break them open by force.
Inside the three boxes were all cash, which Sean Knight had seen already.
It was not a lot of money, but this behavior left Sean Knight feeling puzzled.
Were these really Elson Johnson’s bus escape routes?
What did this mean? Was he involved in illegal activities, which made him leave a bus escape route in such a place?
Inside a small box was a brand new identity, along with a full set of information for this identity.
Naturally, the identity’s owner was Elson Johnson, only his name had been changed to Clement.
The new identity was a farmland owner in George Washington, this box also contained all the procedures related to the farm.
Sean Knight couldn’t tell if this new identity was real or fake, but he thought it was quite convincing.
He couldn’t see any obvious flaws at least.
Another box contained a variety of items, stocks, futures, bonds, and cash checks.
The cash check was for ten million dollars, but Sean Knight couldn’t determine the exact value of the other items.
He already planned to hand these things over to Kathy Lewis for processing.
In any case, this was a good haul.
After putting the cash and the box containing the procedures away, Sean Knight put the stocks and other items back into the box and carried it back to the old villa.
Kathy was directing the servants in a major cleanup when Sean Knight called her into the study and showed her the opened box.
Upon seeing the contents, Kathy sighed.
Mr. Knight is really amazing, he finally managed to get his hands on it.
"Take care of these things," Sean Knight instructed. "I don’t understand stocks, so if you think they’re worth holding onto, keep them. If not, just sell them."
Kathy silently nodded.
Sean Knight suddenly asked:
"Can you check now, what’s the total value of these items?"
Kathy’s response was quick. She reported to Sean Knight:
"About 50 million dollars."
Sean Knight initially thought this was Elson Johnson’s entire backup plan.
He didn’t expect there would be more than just one!
After she left, Sean Knight called Robert:
"The place we found this time was right, but the stuff wasn’t enough. You guys need to keep investigating."
There was a moment of silence on Robert’s end, then Sean Knight continued:
"I’m sending you 100,000 dollars to use as funds for the operation."
"Alright, no problem!" Robert agreed quickly.
This matter could be considered settled for the time being.
From then on, Sean Knight’s life was pretty much between three points: visiting the freight yard every day, picking up Joanna Davis from the new villa in the afternoon, and having breakfast at the old villa the next morning after returning Joanna.
Until one day, Martin called him.
Sean Knight was quite surprised to receive Martin’s call.
"You guys are back?"
Martin’s tired voice sounded.
"We’re back."
"Sounds like you guys are exhausted?"
"Yes. After Bosuns got excited about your treasure discovery, he brought some professional machinery to Swan Lake after returning to New York, intending to dig up the lake..."
Sean Knight was taken aback upon hearing this!
He had suspected there might be something in Swan Lake at the time.
Because some indigenous nations in America like to call lakes "sacred", and they would throw things into the lake after sacrifices.
Indeed, there was something in the lake.
As Sky Eye’s capabilities were limited back then and couldn’t see far enough, he could only see the flashes without knowing what was inside.
It seems that his own vision is still not grand enough, although he also didn’t want to make a big fuss at the time.
Brown really didn’t have that many scruples.
"Isn’t your boss afraid of locals’ reactions?"
Martin explained:
"Not afraid, because that area was bought by the boss himself."
Sean Knight suddenly realized.
No wonder Brown dared to carry out such treasure digging operations every year!
As he was messing around on his own domain, he could naturally do whatever he wanted to do.
"Did they dig up anything?"
"No." Martin’s voice was full of disappointment. "Those machines are massive and had to be brought to the lakeside, where many trees had to be cut down. In the end, the boss had a swath of big trees around the lake felled and hired helicopters to transport the machines there.
Digging started smoothly, but soon, there was more and more silt, and the spring beneath the lake was also breached, causing the water volume to increase. The boss had to bring in water pumps, but eventually, they couldn’t pump out the water fast enough, and there was nowhere to drain it. Now the lake surface has nearly doubled in size... It was a failure."
Sean couldn’t help feeling a bit of schadenfreude.
Brown, it seems you really don’t have the luck to make a fortune!
"Did Andrew Petrov and Chelsea’s treasure hunting team find anything?"
"No." Martin’s tone was weird. "At first, they said you were just lucky, so that’s why you found the treasure. But they searched the vicinity for a week and finally, aside from some rusted iron pieces, found nothing.
In the end, Andrew had to admit that you were very impressive. He told the boss that if he wanted to keep searching, he might have to hire more professional people, or ask you to come over.
Of course, there’s also a bigger possibility that there’s only one treasure in this area, and it’s already been found, and there’s no more."
"Your boss probably won’t believe it," Sean guessed.
"Yes, the boss doesn’t believe it. He sent Andrew and Chelsea’s teams away, planning to hire new treasure hunting teams."
Heh heh.
Martin didn’t know what Sean was thinking and continued:
"I heard that the boss plans to use your success to attract truly professional treasure hunting teams. After all, in the boss’s eyes, even a newcomer like you can find treasure, so professional teams must have even greater harvests!"
Sean thought Brown was really good at leveraging this!
But having made a lot of money from him, he stopped being annoyed.
No matter whether Brown could find anything or not, the most significant treasure had been sold by Sean already.
The main reason Martin called was to vent, as he might have even tougher work after some rest and relaxation.
He didn’t think he’d get along with the upcoming teams as well as he had with Sean.
Martin already considered Sean a friend.
Sean could feel Martin’s sincerity.
That was good enough.
At present, Martin hadn’t planned to leave Brown yet, but if he did, Sean wouldn’t mind leaving a spot for him on his team.
After hanging up the phone, Sean sighed. His presence had changed the fate of many people.
However, the incident at Swan Lake made Sean realize that his Sky Eye still had shortcomings.
The jadeite he had obtained last time had already been "used up" by him.
The energy in the Crystal Skull was also running low, so Sean felt that it was necessary for him to take a trip.
