Chapter 1455: Chapter 699: Made It Big
The sentry’s alert voice woke Sean Knight up.
When he came out of the tent, he found Elijah Hastings and his two companions already outside, and the team members had all emerged as well.
"Two leopards, I think." The night watchman said uncertainly, "They were darting between the trees, and no matter what I threw to scare them off, they just wouldn’t leave."
"There are leopards here?" Douglas Cooper frowned, "Are you sure you didn’t see it wrong? Could it be some other creature?"
"It should be a leopard." the team member replied, "I saw the patterns on its body..."
"The Northeast also has leopards." Sean Knight said, "Northeast leopards! But how did it appear here, and why won’t it leave..."
As he spoke, Sean Knight had already utilized Sky Eye to scan the area.
Indeed, he saw a leopard on a nearby tree, licking its front paw.
It was injured.
The leopard seemed to feel Sean Knight’s gaze and glanced this way before dashing off to a distance.
Its movement was a bit impaired, clearly injured.
Sean Knight surveyed the surroundings of the campground and said:
"I guess it was attracted by the smell of meat here. Let’s have two people on night watch from now on, otherwise, it’s too easy to get attacked."
Afterward, Elijah Hastings arranged for the night watch, and Sean Knight and his group went back into the tent to rest.
The night passed without incident, and when departing the next day, Sean Knight noticed the leopard was still nearby. On a whim, he asked a team member to leave a half-eaten deer leg on a shelf there.
For the remainder of the journey, the convoy sped along, only stopping in major towns for rest, and then drove straight to the location of Tomsk Castle.
It had already started snowing here.
The diamond mine had stopped operation, as the land was frozen, making it difficult to excavate.
"Let’s rest in the castle for a few days and then head back home," Sean Knight said as they stored the convoy’s cargo. "Let’s leave a few people behind to keep watch..."
"What about Yenia?" Douglas Cooper asked, "I think Sam Baker seems quite interested in her."
"Then ask Sam if he would like to stay behind." Sean Knight thought for a moment and added, "Yenia is a local after all, she should stay here."
"I’ll go ask." Douglas Cooper, always enjoying a bit of excitement, went off with a smile.
Soon enough, he came back in, smiling and said:
"Sam said he’d like to stay. I also told him that staying isn’t just about overseeing this base or the diamond mine, but also dealing with that previous ivory business. He agreed to it all."
"Well then, let him stay with a team of thirty people here," Sean Knight considered and added, "The diamond mine still needs guarding. Thirty people can rotate back home for leave, with double the bonus."
Elijah Hastings and Lincoln Harrington nodded in agreement.
"Do we need to stay as well?" Lincoln Harrington asked.
"No need. Winter has arrived, and it’s almost New Year; we should head back," Sean Knight replied, "We’ve been traveling around a lot these days; it’s time we rested properly. Let’s not wander off again..."
He paused, looking at Douglas,
"Douglas, your family..."
"My family is okay now." Douglas Cooper smiled, a bitter-sweet expression on his face, yet there was also relief, "Boss, the money you’ve given me over these past two years has been plentiful.
It’s just about them wanting more money from me, which I just give..."
Elijah Hastings, Lincoln Harrington, and Douglas, having received their salaries, bonuses, and dividends from Sean Knight, and converting it into domestic currency, were each unequivocally billionaires.
Douglas Cooper, after following Sean Knight, had made some money. His parents favored his elder brother at home and had spent all the money that Douglas had saved with them on his brother, claiming it was only right, to Douglas’s great annoyance. This caused him to leave home and stay away for two years.
But blood is thicker than water, and total separation was impossible. Fortunately, Douglas was now financially well off; he gave his family money casually and stayed out of other family matters, which allowed both parties to coexist peacefully.
As for his parents and brother’s greed, Douglas managed it within limits. If they asked for too much, he simply wouldn’t go home or contact them. His family knew they couldn’t control him, and the villagers knew the character of the other Cooper family members too well to tarnish Douglas’s reputation.
Douglas’s girlfriend from Japan had never even been brought home, which was telling in itself.
Hearing this from Douglas, Sean Knight understood.
The three efficient deputies he had, Elijah Hastings and Lincoln Harrington, had harmonious families; only Douglas was an exception. Sean had been to the Cooper house, but he knew such familial issues were hard to handle even for family members, let alone an outsider like him.
Now, having found a peaceful way on the surface was not too bad.
Douglas didn’t stay long in the castle; after just two days of rest, he left Tomsk quietly with his earlier-mined large particle rough stones, escorted by a few team members.
In fact, some diamonds under ten carats had also been excavated from the mine, and these rough stones would be worth some money once cut, but Sean had no plans to sell them himself. Instead, he packaged them all and dumped them at Lana Brown’s place.
Because around Big Island, there were red coral and other gemstone resources, including some gemstones Sean had obtained from the Indian trader—and of course, more frequently, by pretense.
The gemstone rough he had gathered from treasures around the world over the years, along with some finished products, were mostly still stored in the spatial realm, while a small portion he had taken out to entrust to Lana Brown, who had started a jewelry store on Big Island.
