Chapter 1453: Chapter 698: Race Against Time!
Sean Knight straightened up and looked around at Elijah Hastings and his team members scattered throughout the old city; the areas they dug up, for the most part, yielded nothing.
At this moment, Elijah Hastings hurried over again and said to Sean Knight:
"Our people just reported again; they followed those individuals and saw that they are already setting up their campground.
They plan to have a look around the old city here after establishing the campground today and start the official excavation tomorrow—there will also be a television crew coming with video cameras. Since they are speaking English, our people staying behind can understand..."
It was clear what Elijah Hastings meant; he was looking for Sean Knight to make a decision on whether they should pull out immediately!
Reminded of his own experience digging up the munitions warehouse on the outskirts of Little Town, Sean Knight had a stroke of inspiration and immediately said:
"Stop running around aimlessly, everyone come over here!"
Upon hearing his voice, the others gathered around him.
Sean Knight led them to a large mound of soil in the middle and instructed them:
"Here, look carefully at this spot I’m pointing to; start digging from here, make the opening a bit larger, and be quicker with the excavation. Switch people every 10 minutes, aiming to get some results within an hour—
Based on my deduction, this large mound of soil was probably where the official yamen used to be and should contain valuable items..."
After finishing, he stepped back.
Elijah Hastings had never doubted Sean Knight’s ability to locate treasures, so as soon as Sean Knight stepped back, he quickly started to organize people into groups.
With less than ten people in total, excluding Sean Knight, he divided them into three groups. He, Lincoln Harrington, and Douglas Cooper each led a group and then began excavating.
They soon reached the frozen soil layer which wasn’t easy to penetrate. Luckily, they worked in shifts, and Elijah Hastings along with the other two were far stronger than ordinary people, not to mention that the rest of the team members were not average either.
Thus, the speed of the excavation was very fast.
Sean Knight returned to the smaller mound of soil. There was about a 200-meter distance from that to the large mound in the middle—people, except for a few like Elijah Hastings, couldn’t tell what he was up to over there.
When he noticed the others weren’t paying attention to him, he bent down and pressed his hands against the soil!
A slab of frozen soil was directly absorbed into the spatial realm!
A big cave appeared on the ground!
Sean Knight jumped into the hole, braced his feet on either side, and with a scoop of his hands, another large hole emerged!
On the third attempt, the hidden cellar appeared before Sean Knight!
This was actually a space akin to a cellar, only that it had collapsed over time, and its original owner never returned to retrieve the belongings, which now fell into Sean Knight’s hands.
There were a total of three large and one small jars— the large jars were one meter high, and the small jar was about the size of a basketball.
The small jar contained eleven irregularly shaped golden ingots, each weighing about two to three kilograms.
Such an amount was considered a fortune both then and now.
Sean Knight first transferred the jar holding the gold into his spatial realm.
In the remaining three large jars, two were filled with copper coins—completely fused together. Sean Knight didn’t bother to check whether any of the coins were rare varieties, deciding to take them first and deal with them later.
The last jar contained silver coins with relief designs, which could be seen to be of Tsarist Russian origin.
It appeared that foreign trade had already been established by that time.
After Sean Knight had taken these four jars, he scanned the cellar with Sky Eye and found that there originally had been some other items, such as furs, papers, and books, but now they had all turned into ash.
Elijah Hastings’s shouts came from afar, prompting Sean Knight to immediately replace the blocks of frozen soil he had taken into the spatial realm!
Half a minute later, Sean Knight emerged from behind a mound of soil, watching Elijah Hastings running towards him with a walkie-talkie in hand.
"Boss, those people have started preparing the assault boat!"
"Then you need to accelerate your pace even more!" Sean Knight shouted back.
Elijah Hastings raised his hand to show that he understood.
Sean Knight restored the blocks of frozen soil to their original position and then used nearby sand and soil to cover any traces.
He now had a clearer understanding that the position of the small mound was likely a small Courtyard. Its remote location and the insignificance of its size made it an excellent spot for hiding items.
It must have been where a wealthy merchant or officials stored their gold at the time. However, perhaps due to some unexpected events, this treasure had never been excavated.
After all, such wealth would have constituted a vast fortune in any ancient dynasty!
If the original owner had left under normal circumstances, it would have been impossible not to take this money along.
After tidying up the area and roughly restoring it to its original state, Sean Knight circled around once more and re-checked the area. Finding no other valuable items, he walked towards where Elijah Hastings and the others were located.
There, at the location Sean Knight had indicated, Elijah Hastings and his team had already dug a pit about one meter deep. Below was the frozen soil layer, and the excavated soil contained chunks of ice.
Sean Knight didn’t go to help but instead headed towards the edge of the old city.
There, in the general direction Elijah Hastings had mentioned, was where the other group was headed.
Lake Heart Island was approximately two to three kilometers offshore, and if they were coming by assault boat, it wouldn’t take more than 10 minutes.
However, it would certainly take some time for the other party to get prepared.
Sean Knight concealed his figure behind a dirt mound and used Sky Eye to observe in that direction.
Yet, the distance was still too great; he could only make out vague figures moving but couldn’t discern who they were or what they were doing.
