Chapter 1439: Chapter 693: What You Consider Ordinary, Others Yearn For
"There should be something surprising underneath." Sean Knight stood by a low cliffside at the beach and said to Elijah Hastings.
The beach near the north wasn’t the flat, sandy kind; everywhere you could see rocks, cliffs, and the plains and sparse jungle stretching to the seaside.
Sean Knight’s current location was right at a protruding part of the coast, where low cliffs could be seen everywhere. When Sean arrived, he casually pointed at a section of the cliffside, and without any doubt, the team members started digging.
The surface of the cliffside was a layer of silt, and once they dug in, they saw the ice layer, a very dirty one.
Having dug twice before, the team members had gained experience, and as they reached the ice layer, they proceeded with caution.
Soon, the ice was shattered and an animal’s head emerged.
"Damn! A tiger!"
"Yes, it is! A saber-toothed tiger!"
The team members exclaimed in amazement. Although the creature wasn’t as big as a mammoth, it was more impactful to the team members!
"This thing’s teeth are still long!"
To Sean’s eyes, the teeth of the tiger whose head had appeared didn’t exceed fifteen centimeters at most, but within that mouth, they seemed exceptionally prominent.
And the teeth, sharp like daggers, would definitely be powerful if they bit into someone.
Elijah Hastings, however, was considering the economic benefits. He hesitated before asking Sean:
"Boss, this thing... should we excavate it?"
"Let’s get it out," Sean said with a smile, knowing what Elijah was thinking, "Even if it can’t be sold, making it into a specimen to take home wouldn’t be bad—I think anything preserved here should be relatively intact."
Elijah nodded. That’s right, the boss wasn’t entirely focused on money. Having the specimen at home would be pretty nice too.
With that said, the team members got to work.
Over the walkie-talkie, Sam Baker quickly heard that they had dug something up again and exclaimed in admiration:
"A saber-toothed tiger, I didn’t expect we could find one of these here!"
"Your boss really... has such good luck!" Yenia said the same. She had been excavating here for a season and had only come across mammoths, woolly rhinos, and at most, she had seen the giant Deer.
As for saber-toothed tigers, although they shared a part of their history with mammoths, they were comparatively rarer and became extinct earlier.
Finding a saber-toothed tiger here was indeed very rare.
Thinking of how Sean’s site occasionally yielded something, Yenia truly felt a sense of crisis.
She didn’t talk much longer and started digging with a sharp shovel in places nearby that might hold some underground creatures.
Initially, those who excavated mammoth tusks would start by looking for exposed signs.
During the summer, some areas that had been encased in ice melted, revealing mammoth tusks.
So they were truly searching—finding ones that were partially or even mostly exposed.
Later, as the number of people looking for mammoth tusks increased, their footprints began to extend from the sandy beach to the forest land, the ice fields, and even some mountain gorges.
Because they couldn’t detect what was beneath, they basically relied on visible signs to identify potential locations.
Without Sean’s Sky Eye, these people would really only search the exposed areas. The hardest task was groping underwater, as some tusks would also surface under the shallow silt near the beach.
But as the number of tusk hunters increased, the easily found areas were now depleted, forcing them to search more remote or difficult-to-reach places for ordinary people.
Of course, sometimes luck was involved—if one person missed something, another might find it. There was nothing to be done in such cases.
Yenia could be considered one with better luck.
After all, women on average are not as physically strong as men. There were some places Yenia couldn’t reach, and others wouldn’t let her go.
So she was left to search places others had already checked.
And she would often find something.
However, that was over the course of an entire summer.
Having been here for less than one week, Yenia had already found a piece of ivory, which was considered a very good find.
But she wasn’t satisfied.
She hoped to find more.
As the day was about to end, Yenia found a frozen carcass of a giant Deer.
Upon uncovering half of its antler and realizing what it was, Yenia gave up.
Such creatures, even if excavated, would not bring her any economic value.
Back at the campground, watching the team members gathered around the saber-toothed tiger, Yenia felt a sense of loss.
As the days of summer came close to an end, the beach got colder and less suitable for excavation.
She wondered if she could find one more ivory before the season’s end?
After Yenia finished washing up, Viola came over with a smile and asked:
"How was today?"
"Not great," Yenia shook her head, "I’ve pretty much checked this area. It’s hard to find more ivory here. I plan to get up early tomorrow and go a bit further to see if there’s anything to be found."
As she spoke, she looked at Viola enviously.
Viola was beautiful but not stunningly so; Yenia envied Viola’s luck. Not all beautiful girls can find a tycoon or rich man.
In such a country, efforts might improve oneself, but oftentimes, despite all the effort, one might still live mired in adversity.
