Chapter 1417: Chapter 685: There are also Battlefield Relics here_3

Could this have once been a battlefield?

Then, to his surprise, he discovered that there were even lead bullets here!

They were the round kind. Although they were now deformed, Sean Knight could tell, since the "archaeology" had just ended recently, that these bullets were very likely from an early muzzle-loaded firearm!

With fragments of cold weapons, lead bullets, and human bones, this place was undoubtedly a battlefield!

Sean Knight slowly expanded his observation area. He found that the battlefield was long and narrow, stretching for several kilometers, but he couldn’t tell if it was the site of a pursuit or a trap to lure the enemy deep into the territory.

Having found the boundaries of the battlefield, Sean Knight walked in two circles before finding a spot near the mountain that bore dense traces of combat.

This area held not only fragments of weapons but also many complete weapons, though they were nearly rusted beyond recognition. They were mainly iron curved knives, iron arrowheads, iron spearheads, and things like stirrups.

Beyond these were numerous human bones, as well as broken firearm barrels, lead bullets, helmets, armor plates, and so on.

A rough estimate suggested that at least a hundred and eighty people had died here.

It wasn’t a massive battle, and the outcome was hard to determine. However, he guessed that the side with cold weapons had lost, given the abundance of such weapons left behind.

Sean Knight expanded the search again, but before long, it began to grow dark, and he looked up at the convenience and walked towards the camp.

He planned to come back the second day for another look.

There might be a reward in store!

In the camp, many team members were cheerfully arriving at the cooking site with their game, ready to butcher it with their knives.

Although the temperature wasn’t high, the meat from these hunts would most certainly not preserve if not processed.

Lunch was meat, and dinner, although also meat-oriented, was supplemented by wild vegetables prepared by the cooking team member, both fried and served cold, which turned out to be more to Sean Knight’s liking.

After dinner, the team members began setting up simple alert equipment nearby, and Elijah Hastings arranged the night watch while everyone else rested in their tents.

"Boss, shall we continue exploring tomorrow, or stay here?" Douglas Cooper came over to ask.

Sean Knight was looking up at the sky when he heard him and replied,

"Stay here in the morning. Today, I found an ancient battlefield and plan to explore it more tomorrow. If we don’t find anything, then we’ll leave."

Douglas Cooper was surprised:

"An ancient battlefield?"

"Yes. It’s likely the place where the Tantans fought Tsarist Russia described by Lincoln Harrington," Sean Knight said. "It was a battle of cold weapons versus firearms."

Douglas Cooper nodded with a smile:

"Then I’ll follow you tomorrow?"

"Sure."

With Sean Knight’s consent, Douglas Cooper left.

The temperature dropped at night, and Sean Knight entered his tent.

Viola had already changed into her nightgown. Seeing Sean Knight come in, she smiled, came forward to help him undress, and change his clothes.

"Tomorrow we’ll go back there and have another look," Sean Knight said, feeling that there should be a discovery. "Are you going to hunt, or will you join me?"

"I will join you to hunt," Viola said with a smile. "I want to protect you!"

"All right, all right, you can protect me," Sean Knight said with a laugh. "How about I give you your reward in advance now?"

"Of course... Ah—!"

Breakfast the second day consisted of porridge with meat, barbecue, and wild vegetables.

After breakfast, Elijah Hastings announced that the team members could continue their free activities—however, the hunting range could not be far and it must be done in groups, avoiding circling to ensure safety in the jungle.

He went with Douglas Cooper to follow Sean Knight back to the ancient battlefield.

When Sean Knight arrived at the battlefield, he used a tree branch to push aside the thick layer of fallen leaves and picked up a rusted curved knife.

Elijah Hastings picked up the curved knife to look at it, saying:

"This really is the kind of knife used by the herdsmen on the plains."

Douglas Cooper and the others began searching in the vicinity.

Sean Knight expanded his search area. He reasoned that if this were a battlefield, then there should be a campsite for both sides nearby.

Previously seen animal nests could only count as temporary dwellings. For a battle of this scale, there should be a larger-scale campsite.

As he walked, he kept an eye on the layout of the mountains and the terrain. Campsites are usually established on relatively flat ground, near water sources, and not in wind tunnels.

After searching for more than an hour, Sean Knight finally found a campsite.

It lay nestled among the mountains but was not at the entrance to a mountain gorge. There were no big trees nearby, and he wondered if they had been cleared at the time or if the area had naturally been without them.

There was a spring mouth nearby, forming a puddle of nearly a hundred square meters, and a little stream drew the water away. Water and aquatic grass were abundant, indeed making it an excellent place for a campsite.

Back then, the inhabitants had built pit dwellings, some possibly with tents or wooden huts. But now, all traces of such structures were long gone.

After all, the power of time is immense. Some artifacts like baskets that couldn’t be destroyed for 10,000 years, or bronze or iron wares that couldn’t rust for thousands of years, did not exist here.

He quickly estimated that there were more than twenty pit dwellings here. They were quite far apart from one another, with signs of enclosures, but now only the traces remained. The wood that might have made them had long since rotted away.

Most of the pit dwellings had collapsed, leaving behind only shallow pits or depressions. A few were relatively intact, and using his Sky Eye, Sean Knight noticed that those few sturdy ones had bricks lining the walls built upon the earthen foundation!

Could the Tantans back then have known how to make bricks?

However, the bricks were obviously scarce, or else they wouldn’t have been used in only a few dwellings.

There were also plenty of shards of pottery and porcelain in the vicinity, remnants of everyday life, but these were not Sean Knight’s goals.

He walked casually towards the middle and the largest pit dwelling.

Inside that pit dwelling, quite unexpectedly, were dug out one bright and two dark deluxe rooms, causing Sean Knight some surprise. The nomadic tribes had truly brought such dwellings to a new level!

But considering the latitude here and the long winters with their cold, he felt that they must have been compelled by the environment.

Approaching a pit dwelling that hadn’t completely collapsed, Sean Knight stopped, looking at the entrance where weeds and shrubbery were growing.

There was a big cargo inside!
