Chapter 140: Chapter 139: A Golden Opportunity Presented on a Platter!
In the morning, Sean Knight planned to go and check out the area again, and then would report one of his findings.
After eating and getting ready, he was just about to go outside when Martin’s satellite phone rang.
"What? They want me to move locations?" Martin answered the call, completely confused, "Why?"
"Because Andrew Petrov’s team has found a clue, and they’ve split into two groups for a deeper exploration. Sean is currently hanging around in that searched area anyway, so it’s unlikely that he’ll find anything substantial. Hence, you should go to Petrov’s group now, since they’re short on people."
Martin was somewhat reluctant. He felt that his companionship with Sean was quite good. At least Sean was easy to talk to, willing to share his food, and there were no annoying issues to deal with.
However, Brown was the boss, and Martin had no choice but to comply.
"They’ve sent you the location. You’re about twelve kilometers away. If you’re fast, you should be able to reach it by noon."
"And what about Sean?" Martin cast a glance at Sean, who responded with a smile.
"Let Sean explore on his own. He has a satellite phone, so if anything happens, he can speak to me directly."
From the tone of the conversation, it was clear that Brown was disappointed in Sean.
Martin also understood why. This area had been thoroughly searched before and there was no sizable metal reaction underground, nor were there any corresponding clues found.
Brown was very certain of this conclusion.
Now, with Sean insisting on staying here, Brown thought it was normal for him to find nothing.
Martin passed this information onto Sean, to which Sean nodded, saying:
"Well, you go ahead. I’ll search around here a bit more. By the way, be sure to stay safe when you go over there. Keep your gun loaded - although coyotes don’t usually appear in groups during the day, it’s always better to be prepared."
Martin nodded, taking this advice to heart.
During his last treasure hunt with the previous team, he didn’t encounter any wild beasts, so he hadn’t felt threatened.
This time, however, those coyotes had nearly scared him to death!
That’s why he felt such a fondness for Sean.
At least Sean had a humane side.
That was really lacking in the treasure hunting teams that Brown assembled.
Martin left reluctantly. Sean gave him two packets of self-heating food, for which Martin was very grateful.
Once Martin was gone, Sean took a few more rounds in the nearby area. After finding no other treasure, he finally arrived at that biggest treasure spot, where the big tree had drilled in.
After carefully checking the surroundings and finding nothing unusual, Sean immediately began digging downward.
He was planning to unearth everything here first!
With Martin gone and Brown distrusting him, this was a fortuitous opportunity!
Ever since Sean had come into contact with the Crystal Skull, his Sky Eye ability had greatly improved, along with some significant improvements in his physical fitness.
By noon, Sean had already dug up to the top of the largest totem pillar!
Although he had only reached the top of the totem pillar, running his hand along the pure gold object that was even thicker than himself, Sean was still somewhat taken aback!
After packing away the totem pillar, Sean took a deep breath, then returned to the surface to have some food before carrying on.
Just then, the satellite phone rang suddenly.
Sean was startled, picked it up and saw that it was Brown’s call.
He answered it, and the voice on the other end asked:
"Sean, have you found anything?"
Sean figured that Brown must have noticed his lack of movement through the positioning device, so he asked.
Sean said,
"Nothing. But there are a few coyotes around here, so I climbed a tree..."
"Ha-ha-ha-ha, you guys are really unlucky!" Brown laughed rather smugly, "First it was Martin, and now that Martin’s gone, it’s happened to you. Don’t you have a gun? Just get them!"
Brown wasn’t interested in whether Sean had indeed encountered coyotes. He was interested in whether Sean could dig up any treasure.
But he only nonchalantly glanced at Sean’s location during his mealtime and noticed that Sean hadn’t moved for a while, so he asked. However, in essence, Brown really didn’t believe that Sean could find any treasure.
That place had already been searched!
Upon realizing Brown’s indifference, Sean became more vigilant.
After hurriedly eating, Sean picked up the satellite phone and started strolling around the vicinity, considering it a sort of walk-off-your-meal.
About half an hour later, Sean left his satellite phone and backpack on the tree above the last-found treasure, and quickly returned to the pit where he had found the totem pillar. He began to extract the gold and silver artifacts from inside.
At first, he felt it was quite breathtaking, but after a while, it started to feel normal.
It had become dull.
In less than an hour, Sean had taken out all the things from inside and filled nearly two-thirds of his spatial realm.
He immediately climbed out, filled the hole with dirt, and covered it with dry branches and leaves as a disguise.
After walking a few tens of meters away and looking back, Sean found that the signs of him moving the dry branches were very obvious.
A light bulb went off in his head. He took his shovel and overturned the dry branches every few meters in the vicinity. By the time it was almost dark, Sean had turned over all the ground within a kilometer radius, with dry branches everywhere.
In one-third of that area, not only were the dry branches overturned, but the soil underneath was also dug up, creating multiple pits.
This was all part of Sean’s camouflage.
If he was going to put on an act, he might as well go all the way!
Even though his physical fitness was much better than most people, Sean was still completely drained after all this work.
He took out food from his space and started eating heartily.
He quickly calculated that he had eaten three times his normal portion for this meal!
The ability to eat, was the ability to work!
Sean burped contentedly, leaning against a large tree to rest.
The satellite phone rang again. Picking it up, he saw that this time, it was Martin calling.
Martin had already eaten his meal, and he chatted on and on with Sean about many things. They included how hard it was to get along with the two people from Petrov’s team who had split off, how the food they were eating was even worse than his own, how hungry and thirsty he was and no one was showing any sympathy, how he was about to leave and they still made him work until exhaustion, and so on.
Martin rambled for half an hour, and when his phone was almost out of battery, he finally said:
"Andrew Petrov’s side has found a very useful clue, and it’s said that there might be a result tomorrow."
Upon hearing this, Sean realized that there was no rush to report the treasure to Brown tomorrow.
That night, Sean regained his energy and returned to the pit of the first treasure he had discovered, taking out all the things inside it.
He had also turned the nearby area into a mess resembling a dog’s gnawing. Unless they excavated the entire piece of land, it would be impossible to find any traces of him.
These traces, including the last-found treasure that was smeared with blood, had all been covered up. By this time, it was almost dawn.
Sean, quite pleased with these traces he had left, packed up his tools, gave himself a quick wash, climbed a tree, secured himself, and fell asleep.
He didn’t know how long after, but he was woken up by the phone.
He pulled out the phone and saw it was Martin’s call.
Sean had a hunch, this must be good news!
