Chapter 1331: Chapter 657 This is a sad story
The Base car sped across the surface of the ice. Through the glass, Sean Knight saw a penguin wobbling its way back from the seaside in the distance.
He lifted the little penguin up to the window so it could see its kind in the distance.
The little penguin did not cry out with surprise as Sean Knight had imagined. Instead, it looked on curiously, then turned its head to glance at Sean Knight before burrowing into his embrace, peeking out, and gazing outward again.
Sean Knight guessed it meant to express that it did not want to leave him.
It didn’t matter. He might as well treat it as a pet.
The Base car made a large circle and drove to the icebreaking ship.
The crew left behind on the icebreaking ship obviously felt the vibrations on the ice surface. Although they didn’t know the specifics, they had already sent people to investigate and met up with the Base car coming from the other direction, less than one kilometer from the big ship.
Once back on the icebreaking ship, those who had been left behind were relieved, despite still feeling shaken.
However, to see such a big ship now with only a handful of people, the empty Deck and cabins inevitably induced a sense of melancholy.
Conservatively estimated, at least two-thirds of the people were lost on this trip, and that was counting the staff left on the icebreaking ship.
Half an hour later, someone came to announce a meeting.
Sean Knight arrived at the Meeting Room; originally, when meetings convened, there were over 100 people, but now only twenty or thirty remained.
Elijah Hastings, Lincoln Harrington, Douglas Cooper were mingled among the staff, quietly discussing something.
However, within three minutes, Nancy walked in hurriedly. The previous air of domination on her face was gone, replaced by a look of grave seriousness.
"Today’s meeting is to inform everyone that although we are safe for now, it is only temporary. We still need to further investigate what exactly happened Underground in the place we surveyed.
At present, I have already reported this matter to our financiers. They are organizing a rescue team. Therefore, we will be waiting here for some time.
Everyone came here with their own mission. The scientific research personnel can use this time to summarize the results of their surveys from the past few days.
The other staff members must stand firm at their posts. When the rescue team arrives, they should cooperate with them to conduct rescue operations at the site of the incident."
At this point, Nancy paused, then said in a heavy tone:
"I regret the loss of life caused by this accident, but I also hope everyone can rally.
I can tell you that there is a giant hollow place Underground at that survey point. Perhaps there is still a chance that those who are missing can survive...
In any case, let’s not lose heart; there may still be good news waiting for us."
After Nancy finished speaking, she stood up, bowed to everyone, and then hurriedly left.
The meeting ended just like that, and Sean Knight looked around at the others before standing up. He did not return to his cabin, instead, he headed to the Deck.
There were many people on the Deck, looking in the direction where the incident occurred.
The little penguin in his arms called out restlessly. Sean Knight simply let it out, and the little penguin waddled clumsily around the Deck.
There was no ice here, which seemed novel to it. However, after running around in circles, it ran back to Sean Knight’s feet, curled up, and dozed off, occasionally raising its head to chirp a couple of times, asserting its presence.
The sky darkened as night approached. It wasn’t the midnight sun season yet, so even with longer daylight, darkness still fell.
The icebreaking ship was now embedded in ice, but the ice layer wasn’t thick, allowing one to see the movement of the Seawater below. Occasionally, a shadow flitted Underwater, but Sean Knight did not bother to identify what it was.
Anyway, it wasn’t a threat to the humans on the ship.
Someone approached and looking at the little penguin, asked:
"Did you catch it?"
"No, it followed me back—" Sean Knight said, "I study polar lifeforms. While observing them, I found it. Its parents are gone. I saved it from the beak of a skua."
"It’s adorable," said the person, smiling.
This was a woman in her thirties. Sean Knight remembered her; she was from another Base car and had a brief interaction with Judy Morris.
"Yes. Although according to the rules of our line of work, I shouldn’t interfere with its state of survival. Yet, if I had not saved it, it would probably have become skua droppings by now. As a human, I thought I could give it a little help..." Sean Knight said, glancing down at the little penguin.
"A good choice," the woman nodded in approval, then suddenly asked,
"What do you make of this event? I mean, this accident."
Caught off guard by the question, Sean Knight appropriately showed a look of surprise, then shook his head and said,
"I was taking pictures among the penguins when I felt the ground shaking. By the time I got back here, I saw that hollow place—I couldn’t have imagined what sort of situation could create such a pit..."
"I think it might be a conspiracy." The woman looked around and spoke in a low voice, "This expedition was definitely a cover for a Relic excavation!
I was sent to survey the polar icefields far away, and then this happened. All my friends have disappeared below...
I suspect Nancy knew there was something Underground all along! I want to gather some people to negotiate with her. We can’t let this go!"
