Chapter 1246: Chapter 628: I brought them back!_3
"No way around it, I’m just destined to toil," Sean Knight laughed. "I can’t stay put, always roaming from place to place."
"I’ve heard about it. You see, you’re doing well with the coal mines in Afghanistan, aren’t you? And you’re planning to work on copper mines and oil fields next? That’s great! Some people are speculating whether you’ll build an oil pipeline back to the domestic market once the oil fields are established?"
"If the oil reserve is large and the oil quality is good, then building is definitely on the agenda," said Sean Knight. His goals were very clear: in Afghanistan, he supplied the tribes around the base, and the rest of the oil was naturally to be transported back to China.
"I’ve heard that the oil from the Middle East has already come in, very good!" Joseph Davis drove oil trucks, and although the oil prices were not low, the prospects were great.
"It’s alright," Sean Knight said modestly, "this time I’ve come to you about some antiques."
"Sure thing. We owe you big for your help," Joseph Davis guessed it was about this. Sean Knight could always get some treasures that had been lost abroad and were unobtainable by others.
Sean Knight laughed again and continued:
"These cultural relics might have some troublesome origins. If our regional museum here can open, then I’ll leave them here. Otherwise..."
"Troublesome origins?" Joseph Davis’s expression grew serious as he asked, "What kind of trouble?"
"These cultural relics are ’salvaged’ from our country’s sea. But they were obtained through shady and illegal means by some traffickers. A friend of mine double-crossed these guys and snatched these items, then sold them to me at a low price."
Sean Knight briefly explained the situation, framing it as if it were done by a friend of his.
"Then... then do those people have any solid evidence to prove that these items are theirs?" Joseph Davis was still worried.
For those in the system, official reasons and moral righteousness are very important.
Even if it’s well known that these items are from China, they must be retrieved by proper means.
You have to admire the ingenuity involved with the recovery of that piece of Chinese pottery, a thin-bodied jade pot with interlacing branch patterns—it had to be returned properly and officially!
Of course, Sean Knight didn’t need to stick to that. To deal with bandits using a gentleman’s tactics would be like tying one’s own hands.
Pah.
"No, they don’t. Those items were obtained by the other party through disgraceful means; they don’t have any valid proof," Sean Knight affirmed to Joseph Davis. "I think you should consider it. According to our view, it’s just letting those people know that, though they are aware the items were taken from them, they can do nothing about it."
Joseph Davis pondered.
"Of course, you could also claim it is a donation from someone who wishes to remain anonymous. There are thousands of items in this batch; it’s not a small number."
Sean Knight offered another suggestion.
If Joseph Davis and his team didn’t agree to such reasoning, then Sean Knight would look for a different partner.
After thinking it over, Joseph Davis said:
"This is a big issue; I have to consult my superiors."
Understanding the implication, Sean Knight nodded.
The waiter brought dishes like hand-grab meat, ribs, and barbecue.
"Come on, have some hometown dishes," Joseph Davis said to Sean Knight. "As for me, I don’t care about formalities. As long as it’s something you’ve handled, I fully support it. What’s it matter if we have to build an extra gallery? We have the funds for that."
He picked up a slice of onion, breaking it up as he lamented:
"Those cultural relics salvaged by overseas salvagers are countless, and we couldn’t buy them back. Now that they can return, it’s a stroke of fortune amidst misfortune! I think the leaders will definitely agree."
"That would be great," Sean Knight said with a smile. "I understand how you feel."
Having been away from home for so long, these authentic hometown dishes suited Sean Knight’s palate perfectly.
So he ate like a storm sweeping through.
However, Joseph Davis didn’t have such an appetite and went out to make a phone call while Sean Knight ate.
He was gone for half an hour, and when he returned, his face was full of smiles.
"The leaders have agreed. They’ve said that once funds are applied for and approved, we’ll establish a special gallery." Joseph Davis laughed. "Just think, our landlocked province far from the sea, by creating such a gallery, we’d definitely make a big impact!"
After the meal, Sean Knight rented a warehouse in Urumqi and stored the salvaged goods there, along with one-third of the items from the iron frames.
Some items needed expert research, and keeping them at Sean Knight’s was a waste of potential.
However, Sean Knight held onto items that served purely for appreciation, toying or could act as hard currency in certain situations.
Like those dozen boxes of coins.
While he was busy with this in Urumqi, the Davena family in Kuala Lumpur was in total chaos, a mess of activity!
The guards at the warehouse woke up at daybreak and then the incident was reported up the chain.
Unfortunately, they had no clue who the intruder was.
And the most crucial fact was that not a single item remained in the warehouse, yet after several days of investigation, they hadn’t uncovered how these items were taken out!
These were not just one or two items—they were thousands! Even using big trucks, it would take at least a dozen trips!
To transport everything without a trace required a major operation!
Yet, oddly enough, on that night, neither local residents, street passersby, nor street vendors noticed any trucks passing by!
Hua En Davena, who was responsible for this matter in the Davena family, was nearly mad!
The worst part was that they couldn’t report the theft to the police!
There was also another person feeling anxious and frightened—Qin Daifna.
After returning home that day, she seriously contemplated a new plan.
The charm and presence of Sean Knight made her want to get closer, so she decidedly made it her ultimate plan—to become Sean Knight’s woman.
However, when she found a new excuse the next day to visit Sean Knight at the hotel, she discovered that he had left without a trace!
Then the troubles with her family emerged—Qin didn’t need to guess; she was sure that Sean Knight was behind it!
But she couldn’t say a word.
After all, if she did, her meetings with Sean Knight would be brought to light.
Then she would definitely be under suspicion—the Qin family dynamics were something she knew all too well.
Apart from a few competent individuals, most were complete fools.
If they found out she had met with Sean Knight and attempted to collaborate, there was only one possibility.
They would definitely pin the blame on her, making her take the fall!
There was no second possibility!
