Chapter 114: Chapter 113: The Value of the Tang Sword!

Sean Knight answered Joanna Davis’s call.

Joanna’s call was to seek Sean’s advice.

"I am planning to go out for a sea trip this weekend, will you come?"

Weekend?

Going out to the sea?

Sean Knight thought about it and replied,

"I am afraid I won’t have time this weekend. I recently found an antique, and the buyer from China is coming over these days, so I can’t go out for the moment."

"If you are not going, then I won’t either." Disappointment was apparent in Joanna’s voice, "It’s my friend who asked us to come along with her and her boyfriend..."

Sean understood.

However, Mr. Richardson had clearly called already, saying that he and his Uncle are coming over these days.

If going out interferes with serious matters, that would be bad.

"Dear, wait till my work here is done, and we’ll particularly go out to sea for a treasure hunt. I have already found a pirate’s treasure map. We can enjoy while looking for treasure, sounds good?"

"Really? That sounds great!" Joanna immediately cheered up.

They were all young people, who doesn’t like thrilling adventures?

"Then I’ll reject my friend first, and will look forwards to your good news." Joanna said happily.

"Alright, rest assured, it will be very soon." Sean Knight replied confidently, although he was under quite a pressure.

For happily going out to play, one must have money.

He has the required money now, but not the equipment and experience.

He needs to study the supposed pirates’ treasure map thoroughly in this period, to avoid being embarrassed when he gets there.

After a little more sweet talk, Sean hung up the phone and headed to the freight yard where the container auction was being held.

There were three containers being auctioned this time, and Sean glanced around, feeling a sense of disappointment looming over him.

Among the three containers, the most valuable was the third one, which had a large hydraulic lifting device and could be worth around 20,000 dollars.

The other two boxes contained second-hand parts and tools. Even though Sean knew what all the three boxes contained and was somewhat disappointed, he still wanted to try his luck.

After all, there were only three boxes, and Mr. Madden and others weren’t there.

However, Sean was disappointed during the bid.

Even the first box, which wasn’t worth much, was auctioned to the high price of eight thousand and five hundred dollars by these treasure hunters who couldn’t recognize the contents, just because it had two locked suitcases in it!

Sean shook his head slightly. The bidder would at least lose 5,000 to 6,000 dollars!

The bidding for the second box was relatively peaceful. As all contents were visible, it was finally auctioned for 3,000 dollars. The contents of this box might make a profit of several hundred dollars when sold.

The moment the third box was opened, the eyes of these treasure seekers suddenly brightened!

The big size indicated that it could be sold for a high price!

The moment the auctioneer announced the reserve price at a thousand dollars, someone immediately raised their hand and quoted a high price of five thousand dollars!

Sean looked at the affable chubby white guy, and felt that his bidding style was quite like that of Mr. Madden.

However, this became irrelevant as the bid was broken in less than five seconds!

In the end, the container was won by an average-looking white youth for 31,000 dollars!

This was the highest-priced container Sean had ever participated in!

And he didn’t even have a chance to bid!

Once the containers were auctioned off, the treasure hunters scattered in groups. Sean, too, was making his way out.

"The prices this time were truly insane!"

"Don’t you know? Among the port treasure hunters, there is a newcomer. In these two months, he has won big prizes repeatedly in the auctions. Each time, the blind box bidding comes up with some good stuff!"

"Just because of that?"

"Yes! Because of that, everyone now is gambling on the blind boxes! If good stuff comes out of the blind box, one can earn several times the money instantly! Rumor has it that the lucky chap has already made over a million dollars!"

"Really? How could that possibly be?"

"Well, you wouldn’t know. He has found a helicopter, antique cars, sports cars, and even gold bars in those boxes! Such luck - if only it could be mine!"

Sean was rendered speechless!

He didn’t expect that with his efforts alone, he had managed to disrupt the auction market at the port!

What a stroke of luck!

With a sigh of relief, Sean Knight decided not to return to the freight yard for more auctions. Instead, he went to the library.

He sought out maps and hydrographic data of New York Harbor to study.

The image of the pirate’s treasure map was very clear in his mind. He had referenced many maps and had confirmed the general area.

This place was only a few hundred sea miles away from New York Harbor. While it wasn’t too far, it wasn’t along a common shipping route and the sea conditions were complicated.

The nautical charts he had been researching had no indication of an island, making it difficult to pinpoint a location.

Sean simply grabbed his mobile phone and began to use its map function to search.

He found the area he had just been researching, zoomed in and finally spotted a small island.

The name indicated on the map of the island was "Mermaid Island".

Well, Sean squinted, unable to see how this island looked anything like a mermaid.

But after comparing the map in his memory with the satellite map on his phone, Sean was almost certain.

This was it.

The next steps were to review hydrographic data, check weather conditions, etc.

Upon returning from the library, Sean returned to his rented place, exchanged greetings with Aunt Susan, and continued reading in his room.

On Saturday afternoon, Sean received Howard Richardson and Melvin Richardson from Ocean City.

"Howard, you’ve packed on the pounds!" Sean said with a smile, hugging Howard, then greeted Melvin, "Hello, Uncle Richardson!"

"Hello, hello!" Melvin Richardson hurriedly asked, "D... Did you bring the treasure?"

Sean didn’t expect Melvin to ask about the treasure right after leaving the airport. He nodded and said, "I’m guessing you’re eager to see it. The stuff’s in the car right now."

Both men each had a small bag, they didn’t bring much luggage. Thus, Sean had driven his pickup truck to pick them up.

Once they were in the car, Howard excitedly said, "Hey, Sean, this is a nice ride! You seem to be living pretty comfortably, eh? You’ve certainly gotten a bit darker, though!"

"I’m not like you, working in an office, and getting nice and chubby. I have to hustle here and there for a living..."

"Alright, we get it. You’ve even started singing about it... One of your hustles outearn dozens of years of my salary. How about we swap places?"

Melvin Richardson, in his distress, cut off his nephew’s remarks, "Howard, enough of that, um, Mr. Knight..."

"Uncle Richardson, just call me Sean. Howard and I are classmates. We’re all practically family here. Don’t be a stranger."

"Alright then, Sean, could you show us the treasure..."

Sean handed over the Tang sword from a bag on the passenger seat, laughing at Melvin’s eagerness.

"I didn’t tamper with it or attempt to clean it. Being a non-expert, I didn’t dare to cause any damage..."

"Exactly, exactly!" Melvin accepted the Tang sword and approved Sean’s sentiment, "This kind of stuff really shouldn’t be messed around with by non-professional personnel—many treasures have been ruined by amateurs trying to clean them..."

Howard wasn’t interested in the rusty lump. He asked instead about Sean’s current situation.

Sean gave him a quick update.

When Howard heard Sean was spending every day treasure hunting through blind boxes, he looked envious, "Ah! If only I could do that every day—I bet it’s fun and profitable..."

Melvin cut him off while examining the Tang sword, "With your eyesight? Forget about it! You’ll end up losing your pants!"

Howard was taken aback— his own uncle was dissing him—and he was left speechless!

After looking at the sword for a bit, Melvin took a deep breath and looked up at Sean, "Sean, this really is a Tang sword. Are you sure you want to let it go?"

"Yes." Sean was currently rootless, it wasn’t feasible to keep it!

"And the price..."

"Uncle Richardson, you can make me an offer!"
