Chapter 510: Chapter 509: Utter Humiliation (3rd Release)

Du Zhiwen looked at Weiwei, bewildered. Weiwei wasn’t even as tall as his shoulder.

But this daughter, who only came up to his shoulder, was looking at him with the most sincere eyes of a child.

She was his daughter, the one he cherished in the palm of his hand.

In an era where everyone favored sons over daughters, Du Zhiwen just didn’t have that mindset.

Because she was the child he and his wife had brought into this world.

So he loved her just the same.

Unexpectedly, the rigid thinking he had dug himself into all his life was dispelled by a few words from his daughter.

If someone else had advised him, preaching grand principles, perhaps Du Zhiwen wouldn’t have listened to a single word.

But it was his daughter who asked him, using the most simple and childlike language. She didn’t preach to him, just questioned him.

Would he be sad?

Du Zhiwen was shaken to the core.

If his daughter got married, and the husband’s family looked down on him and Xu Sanya, even forbidding his daughter from being close to them, would he be sad?

No, he thought he wouldn’t just be sad, he would go mad.

And could he actually be the one trying to stop his wife from being close to her family?

Especially after hearing that Xu Sanya had cried over those matters, Du Zhiwen wished he could beat himself up.

How could he...

Let the person he loved suffer so much humiliation over the years just because of his dislike.

In that moment, Du Zhiwen felt as though he had aged a great deal.

"Weiwei, you go rest first," he said in a hoarse voice.

That night, Du Zhiwen sat on the sofa with his eyes open, thinking.

Thinking about how, throughout the years, he had deliberately or unintentionally spoken ill of Xu Sanya’s family in front of her.

And as long as he didn’t go too far, she would just brush it off with a few casual words, without getting angry.

Did it mean that every time he spoke, she felt that bad on the inside?

Just for his sake, for the sake of their small family, so she never showed it.

She had always been enduring it, while he time and time again took things too far.

Du Zhiwen suddenly regretted it.

It’s hard for a person to change their way of thinking instantly. If it hadn’t been his daughter who had spoken these words today, Du Zhiwen wouldn’t even contemplate listening, let alone actually hear her out.

Meanwhile, over at her maternal home, Xu Sanya was so angry she had left.

She was wolfing down her food in the kitchen, while Xu Niannian prepared dishes for her.

"Young Aunt, eat a bit less," she said, as Xu Sanya had already had several bowls of rice.

"Young Aunt is hungry," Xu Sanya stuffed a huge mouthful of rice into her mouth, nearly choking.

Gao Lihong slapped her out of annoyance, causing her to cough it out.

"Look at the state you’re in," the old lady said, while passing her a cup of water, "Drink this. You’re eating like you haven’t seen food in generations."

"Mom, I’m distressed, and now you’re mocking me too," Xu Sanya replied resentfully, chugging down a gulp of water.

When she had arrived, it was already late at night.

Many people in the house were already resting, only the old lady and Xu Niannian were still up, discussing Xu Sanya’s issue.

Due to the particular nature of Jin Yu and Jin Ruiyang’s work, they had to return as soon as possible.

The old lady had told Xu Niannian to let Jin Yu and Jin Ruiyang go back first thing tomorrow, and the rest of them would follow after a while because the old lady was worried about Xu Sanya.

But she was quick-tempered and needed someone sensible and rational around.

After thinking it over, the old lady felt that only Xu Niannian staying behind would be helpful.

Otherwise, if Xu Sanya’s temper flared up, no one would be able to stop her.

When Xu Sanya showed up outside the old lady’s courtyard, she was crouching, sneaking around like a thief, almost getting beaten by the old lady who mistook her for a burglar.

Xu Niannian brought over the last dish for her, Xu Sanya quietly ate without saying a word.

Xu Niannian didn’t feel it was her place to say much about an elder’s affair, but seeing Xu Sanya like this also made her heart ache.

Eventually, the old lady was the first to break the awkward silence. Seeing Xu Sanya still eating, she unceremoniously snatched away her bowl and chopsticks.

"If you keep eating like this, I’ll have to find someone to carry you up the mountain tomorrow. You’ll burst and shame us all."

After having her food taken away and being scolded by the old lady, Xu Sanya felt wronged.

"Mom, you’re still scolding me."

"It’s not your first time. Why make such a fuss," the old lady didn’t bother with the unnecessary talk and got straight to the point.

"Running to your maternal home in the dead of night, just tell me, what’s going on between you and Zhiwen, and what do you intend to do? If you don’t spill it all, you won’t eat anymore, and your mother will worry."

Xu Niannian gently patted Xu Sanya’s back, comforting her, "Young Aunt, what exactly did you and Uncle Zhiwen talk about? Tell us, we’re all family here, perhaps we can give you some advice."

Xu Sanya had not been so vehement when Xu Niannian had been upfront with her before.

At least she had only disliked that mother and daughter without being too angry with Du Zhiwen.

But then, she had suddenly run to her maternal home.

Knowing her aunty’s temperament, it was certain she had argued with Du Zhiwen.

If Du Zhiwen really fought with Xu Sanya over that mother and daughter, Xu Niannian truly hoped Xu Sanya wouldn’t continue living with such a man.

Xu Sanya sighed heavily, wiping away tears with the back of her hand, "There’s nothing much to say, just get a divorce."

Her voice was much harsher, her speech laced with sobs, her eyes red and sniffing furiously.

It was clear she was reluctant to part.
