Chapter 500: Chapter 499: Feigning Ignorance (3rd Update)

Hearing that, Xu Sanya brazenly said, "Hey, we’re all family here. If you’re busy, just don’t come over. Your little uncle only broke his leg, he’s not dead yet. You too, with that belly of yours, just like your mom, not knowing your limits. Is the hospital really a place for you to come? What if you catch some bad luck?"

Xu Niannian almost laughed out loud when she heard her say that Du Zhiwen had only broken his leg and wasn’t dead. Thankfully, she managed to restrain herself in time.

Her young aunt was just like her second uncle, always speaking in the same manner.

As Xu Sanya was talking to Xu Niannian, Jin Yu habitually glanced at the other two people in the ward.

The man lying down was Du Zhiwen, Xu Niannian’s little uncle.

Du Zhiwen had never met Jin Yu, but as soon as their eyes met, they recognized each other’s identity.

It wasn’t just Jin Yu who was observing Du Zhiwen; Xu Niannian was also sizing up her little uncle.

Just like in the original host’s memory, Du Zhiwen was lean and wore a pair of black-framed glasses on his face.

He seemed very honest and loyal, not the kind of person who was fickle.

Xu Niannian and Jin Yu both called out "little uncle." Before they were clear whether he had really cheated, out of respect for Weiwei and Xu Sanya, they had to maintain the proper courtesies.

Du Zhiwen also responded with a smile, "Thank you for coming."

Although he was smiling, his attitude wasn’t very enthusiastic—rather indifferent, as if dealing with a regular neighbor.

The woman inside wearing a green and red combo was Zhao Zhenzhen’s mother. Upon seeing Xu Niannian and Jin Yu enter, she scrutinized them for a while.

When she heard the pair call Du Zhiwen "little uncle," her eyes swiveled.

She and her daughter Zhao Zhenzhen had the same mannerisms, both with that petty bourgeois air, always scheming against others.

"Sister Sanya, that’s the niece Niannian you’ve been talking about these last few days, the Baby Nian, right?"

Calling her "Baby Nian" with every mention, and with such a hint of affection, Xu Niannian thought to herself, who are you?

She was always so eager to establish a connection, acting as if they were very close. Xu Niannian didn’t respond and didn’t even look her way.

Xu Sanya, however, pridefully retorted, "Of course, other than my Baby Nian, what other girl would be as bright and charming?"

Xu Sanya was blindly proud, firmly believing her niece was the prettiest girl around.

That was because of the excellent genes from the Xu family, fortunate to have a good-looking father.

Xu Niannian gave a faint smile; meanwhile, Weiwei ran over and pushed aside Zhao Shuihua.

Tugging on Du Zhiwen, she said, "Dad, look, even when you broke your leg, Sister Niannian came to visit you."

Reading between the lines: Brother Qiang was getting married and you wouldn’t let me go.

Zhao Shuihua, who was pushed aside, wordlessly pursed her lips.

Du Zhiwen behaved as if he couldn’t understand, smiling while patting Weiwei’s head: "Thank you for the trouble, Sister Niannian."

He said no more than that.

Xu Niannian brought some fruit, which Xu Sanya washed and shared with everyone, even giving one to Zhao Zhenzhen’s mother with a generous attitude.

Xu Niannian pursed her lips, silent.

Zhao Shuihua glanced at Xu Niannian several times throughout, while Jin Yu chatted with Du Zhiwen in a seemingly casual yet disconnected way.

The chat seemed random and idle, but Jin Yu was consistently probing into Du Zhiwen’s background.

This matter was not something one could rush. Du Zhiwen’s current behavior toward that Zhao Shuihua appeared just like that of fellow villagers, making it hard to judge.

There was definitely something off about the woman, but now it was unclear whether Du Zhiwen had already cheated or if it was just this woman clinging to him.

If it was about cheating, it didn’t quite feel likely; Du Zhiwen didn’t seem impatient or dismissive when talking to Xu Sanya.

He appeared genuinely concerned about Xu Sanya, and not in a forced way, but in the manner of a couple who had been together for a long time, showing care in the small details.

His attitude left Xu Niannian somewhat puzzled.

After chatting for a while, Xu Niannian said she was going to leave.

Before she could go, Zhao Shuihua hurriedly called out, "Wait a moment, Baby Nian."

Her tone of affection suggested as if she were Xu Niannian’s young aunt.

"What is it?" Xu Niannian asked with a cold face, not even offering a smile.

Zhao Shuihua glanced at Du Zhiwen, and then Xu Niannian saw Du Zhiwen frown, looking as if he was struggling to speak.

"Niannian, I’ve heard your factory is doing pretty big?"

As Xu Niannian’s little uncle, Du Zhiwen had been invited to her business’s opening, but he claimed to be busy and couldn’t make it.

It had been such a long time since then, and Du Zhiwen had never visited, which showed that he wasn’t all that keen on being close relatives.

Xu Niannian’s face showed a smile, but her words carried a hidden sting.

"Yes, it’s quite big, it’s been over a year now. Uncle has been so busy with so many things, he hardly has the chance to visit. You were also too busy to come to my wedding with Zhiqiang. I wonder if there’ll ever be a day when you’re not so busy."

With that said, Du Zhiwen’s smile instantly became awkward.

Since he had been so detached before, why was he asking now? Was it just because that woman gave him a look?

Xu Niannian didn’t believe for a second that her young aunt hadn’t asked him to visit before.

So, while her young aunt’s words made no difference, this strange woman’s glance was enough to make him bow his head—an interesting turn of events.

Her words blocked whatever Du Zhiwen was about to say, his complexion grew unsightly, but perhaps due to his pride as a teacher, even if he was uncomfortable, he didn’t show much of a downturn on his face.

He pretended not to understand Xu Niannian’s sarcasm and continued with a smile, "I feel sorry for you all, I just happened to be caught up with lots of things."
