Chapter 375: Chapter 374: (1 more update)
Elder Master Jin was completely preoccupied with the chess game, his serious gaze fixated on the board, his brow furrowed into the shape of the Chinese character "川".
His expression looked like he had a great enmity to settle.
Upon seeing this, Xu Niannian wanted to laugh because the grandmother had slightly moved a chess piece, obviously exposing the grandfather’s killer move.
Elder Master Jin couldn’t possibly still be unaware of the game situation at this point, could he?
Just as Xu Niannian was thinking this, Elder Master Jin very seriously and cautiously placed a chess piece down.
Xu Niannian followed his move with a glance, and Xu Wentian as well as Gao Lihong also looked over.
To everyone’s surprise, Elder Master Jin actually bypassed the spot where Xu Wentian had previously placed his piece and positioned his own in a different spot.
Had Elder Master Jin realized the trap set by his opponent, he could have taken advantage of the space that Xu Wentian had occupied before, and the situation could have been turned around in an instant.
However, Elder Master Jin didn’t notice it.
In other words, Xu Wentian’s trap was still effective, as long as he placed the piece back in its original position.
Suddenly, Xu Niannian thought Elder Master Jin was just too adorable.
Xu Wentian was a skilled player, and Xu Niannian had thought that Elder Master Jin, who had been able to play chess with her grandfather for over a decade, would surely not be too bad at the game.
To her surprise, he was actually this bad, not even noticing the killing move that had been exposed.
Xu Niannian was torn between laughter and tears, appreciating the old adage: true gentlemen watch chess without comment.
Even though she had seen through the move, Xu Niannian said nothing and simply sat by the side, suppressing her laughter.
Just then, Xu Wentian happened to look up and saw his granddaughter’s face brimming with smiles.
Following her gaze, he saw precisely the piece Elder Master Jin had placed down.
Xu Wentian chuckled, picked up the chess piece, and put it back down, returning it to the previous position.
"You’ve lost," Xu Wentian said to Elder Master Jin with a smile.
"What? I lost?" Elder Master Jin, hearing this, immediately looked up at Xu Wentian in disbelief: "Don’t talk nonsense! How can I lose? It’s clear that I haven’t..."
Halfway through his sentence, Elder Master Jin’s eyes fell once again on the chessboard. After staring intently for several seconds, he suddenly expressed his irritation, "You old dead man, not even a word of warning."
"Ah, how could I be so foolish? If only I’d taken your spot as soon as your wife moved just now, how great would that have been?"
Elder Master Jin slapped his forehead in vexation, and then with a huff, he declared: "Doesn’t count, doesn’t count. This round doesn’t count."
He picked up the chess piece Xu Wentian had placed and tossed it back into the little box in front of him.
Unable to hold back any longer, Xu Niannian let out a small giggle.
No wonder her grandfather could be so composed; it turned out Elder Master Jin’s chess skills were like this.
It must have been quite a challenge for her grandfather to play against someone like Elder Master Jin for over a decade.
Remembering how Elder Master Jin had pompously boasted before the chess game, saying he had at least played against Xu Wentian for over a decade, Xu Niannian couldn’t help but laugh again.
She guessed that over the years, the number of times he had regretted a move probably surpassed the number of times he had actually played.
When Xu Niannian’s laughter could no longer be contained, Elder Master Jin instantly turned his head to look at her, glaring with indignation: "Niannian, are you laughing at your grandfather?"
Knowing that Elder Master Jin was now acting like a child, Xu Niannian immediately pursed her lips and said very seriously, "No."
"Then at whom are you laughing?" Elder Master Jin asked persistently, feeling like his grandson’s wife was laughing at him and making him flush with embarrassment.
Xu Wentian slapped the table and said, "Enough already, who are you shouting at? That’s my granddaughter, mind your tone."
The grandmother, protective as ever, added, "Exactly, you’re not allowed to scold our girl."
Elder Master Jin was completely baffled as to how he had been scolding anyone—he simply had a loud voice and was brimming with vigor. How could that be his fault?
They must be picking on him, the lone wolf, he thought.
Elder Master Jin retorted with irritation: "She’s my grandson’s wife! If anyone is to protect her, it should be me, the old man. What’s all this fuss about?"
The grandmother’s eyes widened in anger. The marriage was still fresh, and now he was trying to dissuade their granddaughter from acknowledging her grandparents. She slammed the table with such force that it made the whole chessboard shake, and the pieces fell to the ground.
"What now, you want to take away my granddaughter?" the grandmother challenged.
There was no threat in her words, but the look in her eyes made Elder Master Jin feel as if he dared agree, she would beat him until his teeth scattered.
A wise man does not fight with an angry woman, and so Elder Master Jin backed down very quickly.
"I... I was just saying," he conceded.
"Even just saying is not okay," the grandmother replied.
Elder Master Jin: "...I won’t say it again next time."
"That’s more like it."
With that, the grandmother sat down contentedly.
Xu Niannian and Wentian, along with the others, had long been amused by Elder Master Jin’s capitulation.
Realizing that the laughter of others was directed at him and that he had shown weakness in front of a woman, Elder Master Jin suddenly felt as if the face of the Jin Family had been lost.
The elder gentleman waved his hand dismissively, "I’m not playing with you two anymore."
At this point, the farce came to an end.
It was just in time for the meal, and Xu Niannian brought out the treats she had prepared for everyone to enjoy together.
She had made lotus seed paste cake and red bean pastries, both of which were easy to digest foods.
