Chapter 328: Chapter 327: Grandfather and Grandson Meet (2 more)

The boy was so scared that he lay on the table pretending to sleep; only then did Hu Yue withdraw her gaze.

The train jostled and swayed, making "clang-clang" noises.

This slow train gave Xu Niannian a headache; she really missed the days of flying and taking high-speed trains.

The swaying had Xu Niannian wanting to sleep, too.

After a night of swaying, they finally arrived at Jingdu Train Station the next morning.

Having not rested well all night, as soon as they disembarked, Xu Niannian and Xu Sisi were exhausted.

The group casually found a motel to rest in.

They slept until past two in the afternoon.

Zhou Dinghua was a Jingdu local, and Xu Niannian was traveling with Zhou Dinghua precisely because having a local around was more convenient.

There they were, last night if it had been just the few of them, who knows when they would have found a motel.

Having arrived in Jingdu, Xu Niannian naturally wanted to visit Jin Yu’s family home.

Then Xu Niannian realized she had forgotten something very important.

She hadn’t copied down the phone number of Elder Master Jin’s house, nor did she have the number for Jin Yu’s grandfather’s place.

Now, how was she going to contact Wu Lan and Elder Master Jin?

Oh my goodness, Xu Niannian helplessly held her forehead, suddenly feeling like a complete fool.

Communications being inconvenient now, the only phone number she could remember was that of the Jin Yu family in Nancheng, which was her home number.

But now no one was home, not even Jin Yu. Where was she going to find anyone?

Having had a good sleep, Xu Sisi was brimming with energy, joyfully tumbling around on the bed.

Xu Niannian gave her a look and sighed helplessly.

Forget it, forget it, since we’re here, let’s just treat it as a site survey trip.

As for Wu Lan and Elder Master Jin, she’d just have to visit them another time.

In the end, Xu Niannian asked Zhou Dinghua to help them find a nicer hotel.

The hotel was located in the center of Jingdu City.

The environment and facilities couldn’t compare with those of the future, but it wasn’t too bad either, especially compared to the earlier small motel.

After settling in, Zhou Dinghua left; he needed to hurry and find a storefront, as once he’d settled on one, Xu Niannian would arrange for his goods to be shipped to him.

Since they couldn’t visit Wu Lan and Elder Master Jin, Xu Niannian could only treat this time as a reconnaissance and tourist trip.

After all, with how busy she’d been recently, taking a break wasn’t a bad idea.

So, that afternoon, Xu Niannian took Xu Sisi and Hu Yue to stroll around in Jingdu’s famous snack street, sampling all of Jingdu’s renowned snacks.

Xu Sisi’s stomach was nearly bursting, yet she insisted on continuing to eat. Hu Yue wasn’t much better off.

She stuffed food into her mouth with a straight face, and during this, Xu Niannian never saw her stop eating.

Watching the two persist despite being so full, Xu Niannian was astonished.

It seems she was still too young.

She had always thought of herself as a foodie, but next to Xu Sisi and Hu Yue, she couldn’t even compare; she was at most just someone who could eat well.

But Xu Sisi and Hu Yue were on a whole other level of food consumption.

However, Xu Niannian wasn’t just eating and playing around in such a simple manner.

The streets she took them to were among the more famous ones in Jingdu.

They were also bustling areas, and Xu Niannian was considering whether to buy any appealing storefronts she saw.

She wasn’t short on money, and besides, the property prices were ridiculously low right now.

Even by the standards of this era, the ratio of housing prices to an ordinary person’s income wasn’t as exaggerated as the inflated prices of the future.

Moreover, property prices were bound to rise, especially in a place like Jingdu, where, in the future, every inch of land would be worth its weight in gold.

Therefore, buying storefront property in such a location was a surefire gain.

Xu Sisi and Hu Yue, on the other hand, didn’t have so many thoughts; their eyes were only on the delicious food.

Xu Niannian did find several storefronts that she was quite pleased with.

But those stores were all open for business, and she figured it might cost extra to take them over.

If she really could secure them, even if it meant spending more money, Xu Niannian would be willing.

Yet she didn’t rush over to negotiate with anyone.

Passersby couldn’t help but turn their gazes towards the three of them wherever they went.

The looks from those men at Xu Niannian were particularly heated.

Xu Sisi spent the whole time giggling behind her hand and quietly leaned in towards Xu Niannian.

"Sister Niannian, have you noticed that among the men looking at you, a few have turned their attention to me? Oh ho ho ho, could it be they’ve realized that I’m also cute and pretty?"

"Yes, yes, you’re very beautiful. Let’s hurry up and go before it starts raining," Xu Niannian said with a laugh.

The sky was dark and oppressive, a sure sign that rain was imminent, prompting Xu Niannian not to linger.

But no sooner had she finished speaking than the heavens, as if to spite her, suddenly boomed with thunder, and a downpour of raindrops began to lash down furiously.

The downpour was so heavy it hurt one’s face. The rain had started without warning, and how heavily it fell!

Almost instantly, the three of them were drenched to the skin.

The trio ran for their lives, with Xu Niannian in the lead, sprinting the fastest.

As they reached an alleyway, coincidentally, a white figure dashed out and collided with Xu Niannian.

The rain was pouring so hard that everyone was running desperately, both Xu Niannian and the other person, Zuo Qing, who was knocked over.

The force of the impact knocked Zuo Qing to the ground.

Thanks to her daily exercise routine, Xu Niannian’s physical strength had multiplied many times over from before.

After the collision, Zuo Qing fell to the ground, while she had only staggered back slightly.

The rain was torrential; talking was difficult and visibility was blurred.

Xu Niannian quickly crouched down to help Zuo Qing up.

"I’m so sorry, are you okay?" Xu Niannian apologized.

As soon as she opened her mouth, the rain poured into it, prompting her to quickly close her mouth.

With difficulty, Zuo Qing opened her eyes: "I’m fine, the rain’s too heavy, let’s hurry on."

"Are you sure you’re okay?" Xu Niannian asked again, and as she did, another mouthful of rainwater washed in.

"I’m fine."

The rain obscured their vision, and Xu Sisi hurriedly said, "Sister Niannian, since she’s okay, let’s quickly get back. The rain is too heavy."

Indeed, the rain was intense, making it hard to even keep one’s eyes open, and it stung upon striking the face.

No longer hesitating and assured that the other was fine, Xu Niannian turned and ran after Xu Sisi and the others.

They had just taken off when a screeching of brakes sounded behind them. Xu Niannian instinctively looked back and saw a black sedan pull up in front of the girl she had collided with.

An elderly man with an umbrella hurried out of the car, holding it over the girl’s head and saying with concern, "Qingqing, quickly, get in the car."

Another elderly man followed behind, calling out, "Elder Master, Miss, get in the car quickly. The rain’s too heavy."

For some reason, as she ran, Xu Niannian found her gaze lingering on the first elderly man that appeared.

However, he didn’t notice her.

It was the other elderly man who glanced her way.

Xu Sisi thought Xu Niannian was still looking back out of concern for the girl she had run into.

She hastily pulled Xu Niannian to run faster: "Sister Niannian, don’t worry about them; they said they’re okay. Let’s go."

The rain really was pouring, and the continued thunder made their rush through it all the more frantic.

Xu Niannian then stopped paying attention to what was happening behind her.

"Uncle Guan, what’s the matter?"

Zuo Qing noticed the steward lingering and called out after getting into the car.

Uncle Guan finally averted his gaze and got into the car, as the girl had already run off into the distance.

On the drive back, Uncle Guan had a thoughtful expression on his face.

Was it because the rain was too heavy, or had he mistaken what he saw?

Why did the girl who looked back at them resemble Elder Master Jin in his youth?

Uncle Guan kept his doubts to himself.

Xu Wentian noticed Uncle Guan’s distraction and asked, "Uncle Guan, what’s the matter?"

The steward immediately regained his composure and shook his head at Xu Wentian: "Nothing."

The rain was too intense, and he was not even sure if he had seen clearly.

He didn’t know whether that girl merely bore a resemblance to Elder Master Jin, or if she had any connection to the wife and child in his memories.

For years, Elder Master Jin had been searching for his wife and child. Any trace of news could excite him for a long time.

But after each surge of hope, there came a crushing disappointment, and after each disappointment, Elder Master Jin would be dejected for a long while.

Uncle Guan dared not speak out carelessly, fearing it would lead to yet another letdown for Elder Master Jin.

He decided to investigate the identity of the girl before telling Elder Master Jin.

If they could find Elder Master Jin’s family, that would be great; if not, at least Elder Master Jin wouldn’t face another disappointment.

Before getting in the car, he had seen the girl collide with Miss Zuo Qing.

When Elder Master Jin wasn’t around, he would ask Miss Zuo Qing, to see if he had been mistaken or not.
