Chapter 290: Chapter 289: Can’t Calculate Like This (3 more)

Xu Niannian was calm and collected, not starting a raucous argument with these people like Yang Cuihua did.

Her soft tone nevertheless conveyed that she was not to be trifled with.

These regular customers often dined at Xu Niannian’s place and were familiar with her.

Niannian used to be very easy-going and always treated them with kindness.

When she spoke up, it made the shouting customers stop in their tracks and look at her, curious about what she would say.

Xu Niannian coolly glanced over at the three troublemakers, not in a hurry to argue with them.

Before coming here, Qin Feng had already explained the situation to Xu Niannian, so she was far from being panicked and flustered.

She looked at the onlookers and said, "My family’s restaurant has been open here for almost over three months, and I know many of you are our regular customers. I just want to ask if any of you have ever felt unwell after eating our food for so long?"

Her question took the worried regulars by surprise.

Indeed, they would run to her place every few days to eat her buttered noodles.

They simply couldn’t help themselves because the noodles were too delicious to resist.

Moreover, the prices were cheap, and as far as they remembered, nothing had ever gone wrong. Not only had there been no food poisoning, there hadn’t even been cases of diarrhea.

Despite her noodles being spicy and numbing.

Those who usually got diarrhea from eating spicy food had no such issues after dining at her place.

There had never been an incident of food poisoning either.

An elderly woman said, "Indeed, I haven’t. At my age, eating spicy food always leads to diarrhea, but I just can’t stop myself. Now that you mention it, I realize I’ve never had that problem with your food even though it’s so spicy and numbing."

The old lady’s words resonated with many regulars; it seemed true indeed.

Sometimes diarrhea wasn’t caused by unclean food but rather by excessive spice.

They had never had diarrhea after eating her food.

When she heard some people agree, Xu Niannian smiled faintly, "You are all my regulars, and I believe many things don’t need to be stated explicitly for you to understand. Our business here is the busiest on the entire street, naturally inviting envy."

After saying this, the customers seemed to grasp something and no longer joined the family of three in attacking Xu Niannian, instead waiting to hear what she would say.

But there were still quite a few people watching the drama with an onlooker’s attitude.

Seeing that the tide was turning against them, the old woman and the younger woman started yelling again.

"It seems like your family is trying to wriggle out of this, my granddaughter got food poisoning from eating unclean food at your place and had to be sent to the hospital. No matter how nicely you put it, you still have to compensate," the old woman cried and cursed savagely.

Her daughter-in-law and son also shouted, "Exactly, don’t give us those pretty words, pay up. If you don’t compensate us today, we’ll call the police and settle this."

At these words, Xu Niannian curved her lips into a smile, her eyes shimmering as she looked at the brawny man.

"You claim your daughter got food poisoning from eating at my place. So, I ask you, how old is your daughter, when did she come to my restaurant, who did she come with, and when was she taken to the hospital?"

She put forth a series of probing questions, her gaze piercingly fixed on the brawny man before her.

After asking, her lips curled into a shallow smile, and in that instant, her radiant beauty dazzled everyone.

The strong man was so captivated by Xu Niannian’s smile that he lost his composure for a moment.

Seeing this, his wife gave him a harsh twist.

The man instantly snapped back to reality, his face turning red.

To embolden himself, he yelled, "You just stop talking nonsense, pay up, if there’s no compensation today, this won’t be settled."

"Alright, I’ll pay the compensation,"

To the surprise of the family of three, Xu Niannian said with a pursed-lip smile.

All three were taken aback, and Yang Cuihua was quick to remind her daughter.

Only Xu Zhiqiang looked at his sister with a calm face.

Xu Niannian’s smile remained unchanged, "Even if it were murder, the police would still need to find evidence. You claim your daughter was poisoned after eating something from my place, so at the very least you should answer all my questions."

The burly man exchanged a glance with his wife, and that skinny, dark-skinned man in the crowd started to make noise again, feigning righteousness as he spoke.

"Boss, there’s no point in arguing with them here; they’re just asking for some compensation, and they haven’t made it difficult for you. Just pay them off and be done with it, otherwise this disturbance is going to affect your business."

The thin and dark man wore a look of ’I’m speaking up for you’ and his gaze towards Xu Niannian was sly.

The normally amiable Xu Niannian, upon hearing this, swept him a cold glance and said bluntly, "Who the hell are you? It’s not your place to shout about my family affairs. Compensate, on what grounds? Did you see their girl getting sent to the hospital after eating my food? If not, I suggest you shut your mouth."

In his words, he implied to others that there indeed was something wrong with her merchandise.

Seemingly speaking in her defense, he was actually prompting her to admit there was an issue with her goods.

If so, could she still keep her shop open in the future?

Once she spoke, Xu Niannian had no interest in further pretense with this family of three and stated directly, "If you don’t make this situation clear today, I honestly won’t pay a cent."

Xu Niannian’s stance was dominant and uncompromising.

The three quickly exchanged glances.

The old woman stepped forward, "Then I’ll speak; what’s there to fear? My granddaughter went to your shop this morning. After eating, she got stomach aches, then foam at the mouth, and my son took her to the hospital where she was barely saved. That’s why we’re here to settle the score with you."

Upon hearing this, Xu Niannian sneered, "Where is your home? And which hospital did you take her to?"

Every time one of them spoke, they would look at the others.

Clearly, they were up to something.

The old grandmother, eyeing the possibility of a larger compensation, aimed for the most affluent location she knew.

"We live on Nanshui Road, which is where the rich reside. We have money and our grandchild was taken to Nancheng County First Hospital. Do you think we care about your money if not for seeking justice for our granddaughter?"

Their story, full of loopholes, brought a laugh to Xu Niannian.

Her gaze turned icy, "What a coincidence, I also live on Nanshui Road. Your granddaughter would have had to walk here from there, eat, return to Nanshui Road, and then be discovered to have an issue and sent to Nancheng County First Hospital. After waiting for the doctor’s diagnosis of food poisoning, you had to rush back here to trouble me. Even if you are wealthy and travel by car both ways, it would take at least three hours at the very least."

The old grandmother didn’t realize there was any flaw in this, nor did her daughter-in-law or son.

After hearing Xu Niannian’s words, they replied in unison, "So what if it takes three hours? Is there a time limit or something?"

Hearing this, Xu Niannian laughed and looked at the people around her.

"Those who frequently eat at my place know that my store opens at nine in the morning, and it hasn’t even been two hours since."

Turning to the family of three, Xu Niannian spoke with cutting words, "I’d like to ask how your granddaughter managed to get food poisoning before my shop even opened."

The old woman was cunning and immediately realized she’d been outmaneuvered by Xu Niannian. She shamelessly retorted, "Then I must have remembered the time wrong. Regardless, it’s certain that my granddaughter was poisoned by unclean food from your place. Without compensation, nothing you say matters."

To add credibility, the old woman continued, "If you don’t pay up, I’ll call the police."

When mentioning the police, she intentionally raised her voice, her threat very clear.

Xu Niannian scoffed, "Alright, call the police. Zhiqiang, go call them now. I would also like to go to Nancheng County First Hospital and see what exactly is going on with your granddaughter."

Xu Zhiqiang immediately ran out.

Seeing Xu Niannian’s resolute action, the old woman panicked, "Stop right there."

Xu Zhiqiang halted.

Xu Niannian, with a false smile, asked her, "So, you’re not calling the police now?"

The old woman snorted, "I see you’re not having an easy time running your business; probably an employee was careless and put something unclean into the food which caused my granddaughter’s diarrhea. I’m not trying to fleece you; just a small compensation and we’ll let this go."

Xu Niannian sneered, "This is not something you can just say is over and it will be."
