Chapter 172: Chapter 171: Lifting a Rock Only to Drop It on One’s Own Feet (2 more)
"Jiaojiao," he emphasized his voice, deliberately calling her affectionately.
Xu Niannian’s smile at the corner of her mouth stiffened.
Damn Jin Yu, she told him numerous times she didn’t go by Jiaojiao.
Turned around annoyed to glare at him, but before she could start scolding, she met his whitened face.
"Pfft."
Unable to hold back her laughter, Xu Niannian’s eyes creased into crescents, her long eyelashes fluttering.
Jin Yu was somewhat stunned by the sight.
Xu Niannian laughed and walked over, handing him a silk handkerchief, "Here, wipe it off."
Jin Yu pursed his lips, wanting her to wipe for him. His lips moved several times, but in the end, he didn’t say it out loud.
As he reached out to take it, he suddenly felt a cool touch on his forehead—it was the feel of her handkerchief.
With a smile still on her face, Xu Niannian helped him wipe off the white powder from his face, "Why are you so slow, you’re usually quite efficient, aren’t you?"
Putting down the hand he had half raised, Jin Yu bent over half-way to make it easier for her, his lips curving into a smile.
Gangzi, standing outside the door, gaped at this scene, "Niannian, who is this?"
"Oh, he is..."
"I’m her fiancé," Jin Yu interjected.
Xu Niannian: "..."
If it was fake, there was no need to broadcast it. Sooner or later they would break off the engagement, so why make everybody aware of it?
Hearing this, the disappointment in Gangzi’s eyes was very obvious.
Xu Niannian originally wanted to explain, but seeing the disappointment in Gangzi’s eyes, she fell silent.
Gangzi probably liked her.
Although she thought Gangzi was nice, she didn’t have any other feelings towards him.
If she didn’t like someone, she wouldn’t give them hope—that was her consistent approach. So, she didn’t offer an explanation, tacitly accepting what Jin Yu had said.
Jin Yu noticed Xu Niannian’s hesitation.
That instant, all the good mood vanished in a flash.
"I can do it myself." He took the silk handkerchief, his expression turning cold as he passed Gangzi to continue moving things onto the car.
Gangzi looked at Xu Niannian, obvious loss in his eyes, and scratched his head uncomfortably, "So you have a fiancé now."
Xu Niannian’s tone was normal, still smiling as if she hadn’t noticed Gangzi’s discomfort, "Yeah, we’re engaged."
At her words, a deep sadness filled Gangzi’s eyes.
"I have something else to do, so I won’t bother you anymore, I’ll head back now."
"Alright, goodbye."
Xu Niannian waved at him with a smile, staring blankly at his retreating figure.
People really are visual creatures.
In her past life, despite having a similar personality and not looking too bad, why didn’t she have so many love-at-first-sight admirers?
She’s only met Gangzi three times, and he’s already taken a liking to her!
Tsk tsk...
But she had no right to blame others for judging by appearances because she was the top dog among the appearance-driven.
If it hadn’t been for Jin Yu’s attractiveness, being forced would have only made her upset, without feeling like she had lost out.
If he had been some stinky man with yellow teeth and a fatty physique, in his unconscious state, she would have probably smashed him to a pulp with a large rock by then.
She wouldn’t have cared about whether murder was illegal or not.
Tsk tsk tsk...
It’s a sickness, one that must be cured; she can no longer go gaga over Jin Yu’s face.
After all, he has someone he cares about.
Having such a handsome man by her side every day, treating her quite well, over time, it would be hard to restrain her heart that’s yearning to burst forth.
Xu Niannian was unaware that her thoughtful expression as she gazed at Gangzi’s back had fallen into Jin Yu’s eyes, appearing as if she couldn’t bear to part with him.
"Can’t bear it?" with envy that he couldn’t suppress, Jin Yu eventually asked.
When Jin Yu said this, he was standing behind Xu Niannian, his voice suddenly close, startling her.
Patting her racing heart, Xu Niannian let out a breath, "Why do you move so quietly, it scared me to death."
"It’s because you were too focused."
Xu Niannian didn’t take it to heart, not bothering to explain.
Instead, she asked him, "Have you moved everything?"
Jin Yu pressed his lips together: "I moved it myself."
With that, he turned, took everything from the car onto the ground, and drove away.
Xu Niannian stood disheveled in front of the shop.
What’s gotten into him all of a sudden?
He was the one who insisted on moving it, not letting her lift a finger, and now he suddenly has a long face and leaves it all to her.
Eaten his family’s rice?
Can’t help it, he’s already gone, and I still have to move the stuff myself.
Xu Niannian lifted her skirt and walked over, just as she bent down, suddenly a strong gust of wind came, lifting her hair.
And sprayed her face with exhaust.
Xu Niannian: "..."
Jin Yu got out of the car, walked over silently, and took the things from her hands.
Xu Niannian was so angry she could burst. Damn it, saying you’ll move and then just move, saying you’ll go and just go, spraying her face with exhaust and then acting all high and mighty, as if ’I’m helping you out of pity.’
She has a temper, too, you know.
"No need, I can do it myself, I don’t need you," Xu Niannian snatched it back, fuming.
Jin Yu stood there watching her tense little face as she bent over to pick up things, wishing he could slap his own face.
How could he have failed to control his temper.
"Let me do it."
Grabbing her arm and forcefully pulling her up, Jin Yu bent down and scooped up all the items swiftly and made his way to the store.
Xu Niannian stood there: "..."
She suddenly felt that Jin Yu might not be right in the head.
Jin Yu, too anxious, nicked his finger on a newly bought kitchen knife while moving things.
To him, such a small injury was like being tickled. Jin Yu didn’t even blink, though the blood was flowing quite a bit, drenching his whole finger.
He frowned as he walked out and asked Xu Niannian, "Do you have a scarf?"
Just as Xu Niannian was about to retort with a no, she looked up and saw his bleeding finger.
She hurried over anxiously: "How did you do that?"
Seeing her frown in concern, the jealousy and anger in Jin Yu’s chest dissipated, and his dark eyes softened with laughter for a rare moment: "Cut by the kitchen knife, a minor cut. It’s fine."
"And you call this a ’minor cut’?"
Xu Niannian glared at him, annoyed. How could he be so careless with his own body?
The only scarf she had on her was used to wipe off the white flour from his face, which had been dirtied, and definitely should not be used on his wound.
Xu Niannian simply grabbed his hand and wiped it clean with her sleeve.
Jin Yu did not expect her to use her clothes to wipe it and was stunned momentarily by her action.
Her anxious demeanor suddenly made his heart feel warm.
"I’m fine, you don’t have to do this."
His voice softened a few degrees.
Although he said so, Jin Yu didn’t pull his hand back, letting her hold it.
The smile on his face could not be hidden.
Xu Niannian bowed her head to wipe his blood and naturally did not notice the tender smile on his face. Hearing his words, Xu Niannian said angrily, "How can it be fine with so much blood flowing?"
Just as she said this, she finally finished wiping the blood off his hand, revealing the wound.
About as long as a fingernail and quite deep, but not too serious.
The rest of her words choked in her throat, and a flush of embarrassment swept across Xu Niannian’s face as she suddenly realized she might have overreacted.
The traces of blood dampening her sleeve seemed to mock her.
She reflexively released his hand with a jerk.
All her expressions were caught by Jin Yu’s gaze, from her nervous concern to her embarrassed shyness.
Jin Yu’s mood suddenly became very good, pretending to be nonchalant, he asked, "Who was that guy just now?"
The sudden release of his fingers made her overreact. Coming back to her senses, Xu Niannian realized it seemed too deliberate, and it was just the opportunity she needed to change the subject.
Hearing his question, she hurriedly explained, "That’s the carpenter’s son; he’s helped deliver things a couple of times before."
Jin Yu continued to ask nonchalantly, "Do you like him?"
"Huh?" Xu Niannian was puzzled. Why would he ask that? Had she shown any sign of liking Gangzi?
"Why do you ask that?"
Jin Yu lifted his lips: "If you like him, you can end our engagement early, after all, it’s a sham."
Xu Niannian had just opened her shop, and ending the engagement at such a crucial time would mean not only having to manage the business but also dealing with the nagging of relatives at home.
Just thinking of Yang Cuihua’s crying face made Xu Niannian shiver involuntarily.
"No need, no need, I don’t like him." She hurriedly clarified.
Upon hearing this, Jin Yu’s lips twitched into a smile.
Xu Niannian suddenly thought she had responded too eagerly, worried that Jin Yu might think she was determined to cling to him, and quickly added, "But it’s okay if you want to end it first. Just say the word, and I’ll find time to coordinate with you."
"..."
Jin Yu felt irked, as if he had lifted a rock only to drop it on his own foot, he squeezed out two words through clenched teeth: "No need."
Xu Niannian assumed he was upset because he hadn’t found the whereabouts of his beloved, and offered him comfort, "Don’t worry, our engagement won’t last much longer."
The implied consolation: you will find your true love soon.
Yet what Jin Yu heard was this implication: I won’t entangle with you for too long.
